Oh hell ya!! Joe's two masterpieces are With Teeth and Night Goat,
he had alot to do with Lysol, he spearheaded it pretty much - they
didn't sound like that on any of the albums leading up to it, and their
sound changed after it. Don't write Joe off as lazy at all.

I also have to disagree that Joe 'basically ripped of Earth' -
he's miles beyond them in playing, programming and sheer fucked
up crazy noisy heaviness. IMO

Dude, listen to any track from 'Earth 2', or the first two off 'Extra Capular...' and tell me he didn't just rip them off in 'Hands First Flower'. It's blatant!

If he wrote With Teeth, does he make most of the royalties off the recent 7" then? Is he credited on there? And Night Goat's his, too, eh? Seems like he left an impression on the band with those two alone...

thats dissapointing if Joe did write with teeth, i bet that the rumor that "they" say is complete bullshit though. I get the impression that the back of Lysol has JOE in big letters because he was lazy and wanted to get big fast as buzz stated. It would make sense for him to have not done much on Lysol

even if he didn't write with teeth, the melvins did change up on that album and haven't been back to that sludge pit sense.  his bass sound alone is worth the price of the album.
and i can see why buzz said he didn't like his work ethic, i mean fuck who could keep up with buzz anyway, they put out so much shit it would be difficult for a stoner to keep up.  just look how regularly joe puts shit out now.

Dudbean

Would someone please tell me WHERE they read that Joe contributed to Lysol? I don't think he did anything. His bass sounded good, but as for writing, I'm betting Buzz did it all. He has said in interviews that Mark D was the first one, aside from himself, to write any songs. His solo album and the rest of his stuff are very sludgy, but I'm sure if he wrote anything on Lysol, it would have been mentioned. That would be a good question to ask Buzz or Dale at a show sometime.

well joe played in earth, so he couldn't rip his own band:) but i don't if he played in earth before melvins, you can bash me:)

Yeah, he played in Earth for their 1991 EP, 'Extra Capsular Extraction' before joining the Melvins. By the by, Earth was NEVER Preston's band. It's all Dylan Carlson's baby...

yeah i knew about that, but he was in the band :)

Listen to the first 10 minutes of lysol.... then notice joe was in earth...

Unless Buzzo really liked that sound and specifically recruited joe from a band with that sound.

I don't think its just a wild coincidence. But who knows. The Melvins influenced Earth with gluey porch, and then melvins influenced by earth. Like revolver- pet sounds - sgt peppers or whatevcer the beatles went. Weird.

Preston did not have anything to do with songwriting on Lysol.  By the by, I happen to recall an interview where the Melvins rated all of their past records (up until '94 I think) and Dale reviewed The Preston EP by saying Joe treated it like a homework assignment.  He gave it a "big, fat zero".

Reverend Ebeneezer

Does this interview still exist in any format? I'd love to read it, sounds cracking! Anyone help?

I don't have the article anymore, it came out in the Rocket in '94. Oddly enough, I was in 8th grade when that came out, I picked it up the same day I went downtown to purchase Houdini on vinyl for 6.99, my first Melvins album! That article was the only discography I had of them for years.

hey a friend of mine pointed out to me a while back the correlation between the cover of lysol and the lyrics in koollegged.  the lyrics are supposed to be "jesus as an indian" not "jesus and an indian"  i think buzz still has this painting hanging at his crib.  just an interesting little note from a reliable source.

that interview with the homework remark was reprinted in the issue of Pissing in the Wind that is on this site somewhere

Reverend Ebeneezer

Brilliant stuff! I'm so pleased that I could read it...I love articles like that about bands. Seems Joe was pretty lazy after all, if Dale and Buzz are to be believed...Thanks for the heads up Merida.
