All 4 records are classic albums with identities all their own. The time between them helps make them sufficiently disparate.
TOOL is one of the top 7 bands ever...I consider The Beatles, The Who, Stones, Melvins, Nirvana, Rush and TOOL in the group.

I'm not so sure about Rush.. .. but Aenima and Undertow are unbelievably great albums.  I wonder what Maynard & the band think about the elaborate theories devoted to their lyrics (re: the fibonacci sequence, lyrics, etc..)..meaning, is it a great coincidence?  Am I making sense?

Their live shows lack intensity.

Several of the dates of the most recent tour have yes, the Lateralus tour they were still mixing up the setlist and showed a lot of energy throughout a majority of their live shows this period (I've got nearly 110 Tool DVDs, and the majority are from 2001-2002). But every show I have before the Lateralus tour they were amazing each night. I mean like every show I've gotten to listen to and see up to the Coachella '99 show was as energetic and engaging as nearly any band I've ever seen. The 1998 tour was my favorite, with Buzz coming out each night to do covers and varied setlists each date, also the Melvins opening each night must have been nice. But my point is that for a long time they were very intense and its just recently that they have gotten a little old, and though I think their material has actually gotten better their performances do lack a bit of energy now. They still put on a damn good show each night, I've listened to a good majority of this and last years dates that have been recorded.

The thing I respect about Tool is similar to what I respect about the Melvins... that they've maintained artistic control of their imagry, presentation, and music for the duration of the life of their band. Tool even wrested a bigger chunk of money (50% of the take) after suing their label for breach of contract. The number of artists that stood up to the majors in their prime like that and came out on top (without filing for bankruptcy) can probably be counted on one hand.

Many of their fans, however, are some of the worst music fans on the planet. Violent, beligerent morons. They tried to boo Buzz off the stage at the Paladium in LA when I saw them play together back in like 96 or 97. Buzz played one song, then hit an atonal guitar chord and held it for something like 15 or 20 minutes straight... just sticking it to those fuckers without so much as a flinch before eventually leaving the stage. I respected them a lot for doing that instead of buckling and trying to play a set just because Tool were their friends. The bulk of that audience deserved to be napalmed. When I saw Tool in SLC, Keenan threatened to shut down the show when the fans in front of Jones started ripping out folding chairs in the GA section and tossing them over their heads.

That said, I have hipster friends who use that as their entire basis for not liking Tool, which isn't exactly fair. Kind of revealing, though, of why people get into certain bands. Street cred, pedigree, style and physical beauty carry a lot of weight. Indie/ironic/DIY aesthetic now means more than sound, which is bullshit.

TOOL are brilliant...one of the top 10 all-time bands. I always find it interesting that the greatest bands can be hated by some.....Patton and Justin Chancellor hate the masters of the masters, The Beatles.

Before 10,000 days came out does anyone remember when tool said Maynard had left because he found Jesus?
I remember thinking GOOD now the rest of them can join the Melvin's.
Now that would of been good, Danny and Dale on drums Justin on bass Buzz and Adam on guitar.
We wouldn't of had to suffer half of 10,000 days.

I think Tool and Melvins are two totally different things. Don't forget where the Melvins are coming from, bunch of misfits from Aberdeen growing up surrounded by small minded rednecks and other conservative pricks, right? According to Buzz, it was hell. This must have been a major influence on them, and woke the Neanderthal inside of them. And it still shows. Buzz has said this once, that Melvins is his 'neanderthal' outlet, or something among those lines. So blaming Tool for not being heavy or noisy enough is a non valid criterium to me. Not even all Melvins fans like the Melvins because of that, each has his/her own reasons.

When i listened to tool i listened to korn and static x, system of a down, and all those really terrible nu metal bands.
That was when i was in grade 9... im 20 now.
eventually i got into better music... and then even better... and then finally really good music by talented artists.
not to say tool is not talented... their drummer is amazing... as far as technicality goes... i guess that goes for all the band members.
