I've already mentioned, the NOLA show was great. Danny and Justin's ladies had flown in, so the FOH was well stocked with Stellas. Although Buzz (Melvins) had decided not to join in on a song (telling me that the band would sound just fine without him), he did share some rather humorous stories backstage. One of them was how Adam, tour manager, Mary Jo, and he had been invited to ride along on patrol with a Texas Ranger in Austin, and were later taken to a certain location (I think it's called Texas) where they could fire a plethora of weapons... and shoot to their hearts' content. They even got to experience the lawman 'light-up' someone, but, unfortunately, this wasn't a Tool enthusiast. I told Buzz that, while this was pretty cool, when I was in Houston, an astronaut with NASA who liked my newsletters asked Laralee and I if we wanted to go for a ride on the next space-shuttle launch and watch them perform middle school-level experiments while orbiting the earth. Before he could respond, a couple of female Melvins fans were escorted into Adam's dressing room with hopes of getting a photo taken with him (Buzz). Adam was all smiles, telling them how, when hanging out with Buzz, kids were always coming up to him (Buzz), some even wearing Tool shirts, wanting his autograph, but not aware of who he (Adam) was. Knowing that Adam (not Buzz) was waiting for a couple of bottles of "Lucid" to arrive, I decided to hang around a bit longer. Hell, a shot of "Lucid" and box of Triskets and you've got a party. But the bottle never arrived, so I moved on to greener pastures (Actually I was glad it didn't show up, because I was going to be viewing fractal geometry on Breck's laptop later on the bumpy bus.)

I knew that was coming.      believe me, I still think tool sucks.  never spent a nickle on the overrated losers.
but somehow MELVINS and/or Buzz Osborne pops up on their updates 2 or 3 times a month.  its a better place to get MELVINS information than most MELVINS websites.   except this one of course.

Funny how Adam Jones says nobody recognises him. In the Melvins show at Cherry Bar in Melbourne 4-5 years ago I was standing next to this dude asking if he had a lighter (to light a joint) and he didn't . I only realised it was Adam when a couple of drunk idiots started harassing him...

i actually got into the melvins through tool. i first checked out 'divorced' in like 8th grade, and at some point heard 'honey bucket', but never really got into the melvins until watching several videos of tool's 1998 tour where buzz used to come out for a few songs each night (stinkfist, you lied, stranglehold, no quarter). this was about mid-high school, and after that i grabbed some shitty torrent with all the main melvins albums, and three years later i own the majority of their albums on vinyl and cd.

I think most of the tool hatred should be directed towards their doucharmy. I'm not big on tool anymore but goddamn they put on a good show in montreal. Besides, undertow, aenema, lateralus and 10,000 days are filled with gems.

I've tried.   and tried.

it just doesn't happen for me.

I hate to pick on such a close friend to Buzz but there is no crunch in the guitars what-so-ever.
its overly technical and void of any personality.

in my opinion.

I guess it all started way back when.

I was listening to danzig, butthole surfers, melvins, jesus lizard, black flag, etc.    but the one crucial component was that the band HAD to have a pedigree.

I used to get all kinds of promo packs from caroline records, metal blade records, alt. tentacles, etc.

one day I get this promo pack for this band called tool.  it was about the same time opiate was released.
the promo pack, which included a press photo, talked up this band like they had a pedigree a mile long. like this WAS the band of the future and commanded respect. (which is exactly what happened)  and blah, blah, blah with the maynard james keenan being some kinda musical mastermind.    but to me I was like "who the fuck are they?  never heard of 'em."       then I popped in opiate, which came free with the pack.  I got about a half song in and had enough.
it was rock.  not even nasty or evil rock.  just rock.    I was looking for something grittier.  something with an edge.
to me tool had no edge at all.

pretty soon tool was everywhere.    so I gave them a try, and another try.  I even borrowed aenima from my brother one time when I was desperate for some new music.  again,  I got about 2 songs in maybe.

in short:  no.  I get nothing from any of their music.   except maybe a headache when I hear every gay-ass bar band I know play prison sex right after rage against the machine's "bomb track" and right before STP's "flies in the vasoline".
which, by the way, is another classic example of  a band with no pedigree being pushed HARD by their label.
