:? Terror Firma should die.
i like how the one guy knee-jerkingly describes the attitude of the presumably british interviewer as being "modelled on the US brat."

anyway, i'm not too familiar with Terrorizer, but i seem to recall reading an interview they did eons ago with trey spruance, and it was actually pretty good and certainly nothing like this smarmy article with buzz that has got people here so up in arms.

In terms of single songs to lure people into the Melvins, I can't think of another one on par with Honey Bucket, except maybe Let It All Be, the live HOB version. My friend isn't a Melvins fan, but he listens to that over and over.

but what about Lizzy? And Eye Fly's? Hooch? Night Goat?  Those were the songs I loved when I first got into the melvins. Honey Bucket scared me at first. When I was listening to it i really couldnt figure out what was going on and why I had this guilty pleasure for the song... It was like... okay.. This sounds like something I would hate...but why am I kind of liking it? and then bam.... my cherry popped.

What seems perfect, usually turns out to be boring, and what ends up being absolutely perfect, seemed boring at first.

That's from a book I'm currently reading, I'm not that ironic myself.

it's a back n forth argument on the terrorizer bbs forum:

Melvin's Interview and the state of the metal underground

What's the point of employing someone like David McNamee as an underground journalist?
And if that isn't bad enough, then sending him out to interview a band like The Melvins?

One of the things that's been increasingly getting on my tits is the growing number of emotionally
immature of kid-like beings that claim to be part of the metal underground. They seem to be taking
hold on internet forums and in magazines. It's not necessarily an age thing, some of these 'kids' claim
to be in their 30s! It's not even an intellectual thing, we come in all shapes and sizes, it's more a brash,
aggressive, big mouth behavioural thing, modelled on the US brat. You get the weird situation where
an underground music metaller in their 20s ends up telling a 30-something to fucking grow up. It also
manifests itself in a lack of respect for an artists work, as was the case in the Melvin's interview.

Now, I'm not going to defend The Melvins, they still owe me for the money I spent on 'Prick' that I put a blow
torch to and as a result never bought another Melvins album again. But entertainment value aside
(i.e. reading someone of Buzz Osbourne standing telling young David of no standing whatsever that
he's "an asshole"), young David reflects that same attitude we are getting on forums like... no, I won't
mention the name, but it's typical of many forums that are full of wiseguys and full of shit. It's no wonder
Stephen O'Mally shut the forum down on Southern Lord, I guess he was sick to death with it too.
I suspect what was once the underground is now becoming mainstream as its popularity grows,
but that's alright, a new underground will form as it always has done and always will.

No god damn it, it's not alright. I went to the gym this afternoon and I couldn't get near the benches because of loud
mouthed bloody yobbos getting in my way. The final straw was when I couldn't get near the punch bags because
there was a group of mouthing off, showing off, teen brats hanging around them stopping me from knocking seven
shades of shit out of them (the punch bags not the kids), which I needed to do because they were so annoying.

...and the cover of Terrorizer this month doesn't help. Bloody posters, bloody cartoons, bloody adverts.

Am I becoming a grumpy old man?

Re: Melvin's Interview and the state of the metal underground
Interviews don't exist for the purpose of kissing some rock star wannabe's ass. Interviews exist to
get questions answered, and very often, that means an adversarial stance is entirely appropriate. No one
is owed respect merely because they are in a fucking band. This isn't high school: social 'stature' shouldn't
immunize you from facing the tough questions.

That's true, but being adversarial is not the same as being yobbish and disrespectful. Besides, in this specific case,
it offered no real challenge, and was probably only fueled by Buzz's notoriety for being mouthy.

Being adversarial can be more respectful of a musician than hyping them up.

Trying to make Buzz less of a rockstar wannabe is sort of bursting into an open door.

Anyways, I need to re-read that piece to remind myself of what I thought about it. So, stop
everything you're doing and hold your breath til I'm back

Re: Melvin's Interview and the state of the metal underground
So, questions like....

"Speaking of 'Angel of Death', do you ever look back on the time you called Slayer a bunch of 'shorts-wearing
Satanic banana brains' and then listen to 'Reign in Blood and think 'I am a fat middle-aged man who looks like Robert Smith, Kill me'?

...are deep, investigative journalism that isn't afraid of flushing out the truth no matter what the cost?

The fact that anyone outside of thrash and mainstream metal would agree with him is neither here nor there
I suppose, most middle-aged men regard their music as sell-out.

Buzz's response just about sums it up

"Yeah sure all the time, I mean why not kill me for how I look? It's interesting that you would defend a band
like Slayer though, my only question is why? ... oh and don't forget to go fuck yourself you stupid prick"

To answers Buzz's question, it's because theres still an awful lot of money and many more posters left in the brand... I mean band.

...and hurry up AVI, I've been holding my breath since 7.18 and it's 8 O'Clock now.

Absolutely. I think Dave MacNamee is an excellent writer, I really enjoy his psuedo-intellectual but
quite tongue-in-cheek articles. From the article it wasn't clear whether or not Buzzo got the joke, but I
found it hilarious. Great read.

God, absolutely.

But, as you say, there's a difference between critical rigour and wanton obnoxiousness.
Which Beerman certainly has a point about. There's a certain bratty attitude about that looks
less and less like outspoken scepticism and more and more like arrogant posturing. Although
that might be because we're getting old.

Yeah, I think a responsible journalist owes it to his readers to remind them that the subject of a given interview is a
self-aggrandizing retard. It was a nice gesture on his part to give Buzz the opportunity to retract a particularly moronic
statement. Too bad Buzz wasn't smart enough to do so.

Not relevant at all. You know what is relevant? The fact that anyone who fails to recognize the artistry of early Slayer is a moron.

I personally find it rather humorous that Buzz has no use for Slayer except when it benefits him financially, then they're great guys. What a turd, imagine how pompous he'd be if he had, you know, actually accomplished something in his long and fruitless career.

Re: Melvin's Interview and the state of the metal underground
This is not about Slayer being great and Melvins being shite or vice versa.
U thinking Melvins achieved nothing is irrelevant to this discussion.

Let's say an artist you respect would have been asked questions like that.

The discussion is about journalism.

Re: Melvin's Interview and the state of the metal underground
Thank god you've spoken Avi. I've been holding my breath all through the Red Sparrows concert.
Not easy whist drinking 8 pints of beer I can tell you. A concert that played black and white film throughout of executions,
mass murder, Chinese marching armies etc, proving (I thought), once and for all that "post-rock" was Doom, only to discover
after talking to Andy from the band after the show that he thought there was hope for mankind. I was devastated by this remark,
so much so that I let my breath out. Mind you, I didn't breath in again until I read your response, honest. Forgive me. I am drunk.

Why would I care? I would hope that artists I like would be bright enough not to try to put themselves over
at the expense of others, especially if they're trying to do it at the expense of people who are bona fide
legends. Seriously, getting butthurt because some interviewer didn't fondle the nuts of a music biz also-ran is just sad.

I'm only upset that the interviewer didn't hit Buzz with better jabs. For instance:

"Buzz, you've been doing this for 26 years, without any significant creative or commercial success. So why do you keep wasting your time?"

You keep missing the point. I give up.

The basic problem is your lack of a point to begin with. Being a musician doesn't mean you shouldn't face mockery
for doing stupid shit in public, and the best rock journalism from Lester Bangs on down has always been cynical,
vicious and mocking in tone and intent (whoops! so much for blaming it on the whippersnappers!). This is metal,
baby, not Meet the Press.

Re: Melvin's Interview and the state of the metal underground
Yeah, but one man's 'stupid' is another man's 'brilliant' and visa versa. If everyone mocks anyone for anything
they regard as being stupid, then we end up where we are today, with total disrespect for everyone and everything and universal brat behaviour.

Wouldn't it have been better to ask Buzz why he thought Slayer were a bunch of shorts-wearing Satanic banana brains?
Let's try it. I'll play the part of Buzz. Obviously any comments I make in this role play do not represent the opinions of the real Buzz.

David: Why did you call Slayer a bunch of shorts-wearing Satanic banana brains?

Buzz: Because in metal there is a mainstream, just like in pop there is a mainstream. It's very profitable.
The performers don't wear glam costumes, but they wear a costume neverthertheless. The image is denim
and leather and tattoos which mimic the sort of things the underground metal people tend to wear. But their
music is designed to appeal to a mass market of youngsters, and feed their rebellious feelings.
They are selling a dream if you like, a "rebel without a cause" dream which the youngsters can buy for a bit and then discard
as they get older. The music is designed for pure entertainment value, like Monosodium Glutamate on your chips.
You're only meant to jump up and down to it. It's meant to stop you from thinking. It has to be simple, catchy, easily
digestible and loud. Back to the fashion. Shorts are part of the fashion, the longer and baggier the better.
Phil Anselmo from Pantera was the benchmark, and of course you had to be Satanic. Being Satanic is as important as wearing the shorts.

David: OK, but why "Banana Brains"

Buzz: It's an anagram of "An ABBA Sinnar"

David: What?

Buzz: It draws a parallel between the two groups, Slayer and ABBA, both experts in exploiting their own music markets, both are Sinners in the eyes of the underground.

David: But Sinner is spelt with an 'e'?

Buzz: It's the Gangsta spelling.

David: Just die will you.

Buzz: Prick.

Now isn't that better?

Yes, I have the same problem. Maybe back in 2008 they could see the scans in its original resolution, but right now that's impossible.

Oh god I remember that, the guy said something along the lines that Honey Bucket was the only good song the Melvins wrote or something and Buzz spends the rest of the interview calling the guy a piece of shit. It really goes downhill from the Honey Bucket comment.

Is it the infamous "I can write a better riff with my asshole" interview? I vaguely remember this. I remember being able to read the scans though.

Interviewer:  "Do you ever worry that you'll never write a better song than "Honey Bucket"?  It's your "Angel of Death, singular in its perfecton. There isn't any way that you could make it any better."

Buzz: "Almost all of our songs are better than "Honey Bucket".  I could write a better song with my asshole."

I can still read it okay.
