Thought I'd start up a thread precisely for our opinions and thoughts on the new album. The other one is quite clutterred, is at 9 pages and covers our stupid predictions on the album. So post away here ONLY if you have heard the new album. (ROTFLMFAO)
I'm seriously counting the days, hours, minutes, seconds...
then i will shoplift, borrow, buy or otherwise procure said CD
i'm not impressed by it, which is a very GOOD thing. that means it'll grow on me and then i'll love it. the albums i like right away suck.
yeah me and a bunch of people have it..... after you listen to it edit the post you have made for your review.
you bastards had better be soulseeking this sucker, because when i get home from work, i'm going to have new melvins on my mind :D
i need a copy of this.
anyone? :D
Hey, is the III and toadi acceleratio both instrumentals with no vocals?
If so I'm kindof disappointed by that thouH Todai Accleratio is cool.. I've only heard 3 tracks so far... Friend is gonna send the rest tonight.

I'll post a review later tomorrow so I can give it a fair chance, on a good stereo.

i think this song shows some new influences on buzz. some good riffage on there though. i'll review in a couple of days when i listen to it at work ALL DAY LONG!!!!!
After hearing the rest I liked some of it. It fits together well and has some cool effects. Not hard drumming in a lot of it though.
My favorite tracks would be the bloated pope and pink bat. Pink bat is a really werid song and I like intro with the weird voice.
Pigs of the roman empire. It really picks up near the end IMO. I like the fadding in and out kindof feeling it gives kindof like a scary movie feeling to it. but the 20 mins long make it hard to actually listen to it.
Pink bat has some good guitar and drumming in it. It has the weird effects to it which makes it seem like Lustmord really did some work on it. Lustmord has his hands all over this cd (which isn't a bad thing). Buzz vocals to this song are very outstanding.
Saftey third. Is a good song. demon voices, very weird. Good guitar and drumming.
All the instruments in these songs are well done. Lustmord contributed a lot.
It's a good album. It feels like it belongs with DOOM 3.
I donno if I'm gonna buy it right when it comes out or get it after I get bootlicker.
i just finished my first listen.
right now, i feel quite disappointed, i'm sorry to say. it's kinda the album that i feared it would be -- full of seemingly random bumps, bangs, and clanks, with lots of whooshing sounds. and lots of reverb. the songs are extremely fucked-up, as if they were recorded normally and then chopped up and remixed. there's definitely good bits, but there's not any song, save for "the bloated pope," that feels like something resembling "classic" melvins. it just feels sloppy and unfocused, like they just took a bunch of riffs and noises and threw them in a blender.
track by track:
1)III -- just an intro, essentially. reverby banging sounds, with whooshing, eerie high-pitched violinesque sounds, and chime clanks. it leads directly into...
2)the bloated pope -- the best song on the album, and the most "traditional" melvins song. unfortunately, it's all downhill from here.
3)toadi acceleratio -- a vaguely east indian-sounding rhythmic instrumental with a repeating guitar line in the background. very static, essentially goes nowhere.
4)pigs of the roman empire -- more clanking, whooshing, and banging noises. around the 6 minute mark, a cool riff begins surfacing and receding a few times. dale's drums fade in and play along for a while, and then the riff fades back into more fucking whooshing sounds. i'm beginning to dislike lustmord at this point. around 11:00, a funky drumbeat emerges and kevin plays some evil bass notes. then, it's some distorted drum/bass thing. around 14:00, an AWESOME riff comes around, and the whole band rocks for a while, until it ends at 18:30. then, guess what? more lustmord clicks and whirrs and gothic keyboardy pad sounds. the end. shit.
5)pink bat -- noise blasts that sound like a cat walking across a distorted casio keyboard for the first minute, and then...an actual song. only thing is, it's produced/mixed really weird, so it's a bit underwhelming. there's some bee-in-your-bonnet lead guitar, and buzz begins singing around 2:30. more noisy leads follow after that, and the track ends without anything very interesting happening. the mixing is really fucked up, and kinda gets in the way of what could've been a strong track.
6)zzzz best -- more reverby thumps, only from dale's drums. kevin noodles on the bass. leads into...
7)safety third -- could've been the best track on the album, but the band's completely overwhelmed by lustmord's sound effects. it's like the musical track is turned down farther than it should be to make room for the squeaks and gurgling monk chant sounds. dale's drums sound like he's playing buckets. buzz's vocals are pretty cool, but they're totally obscured. it sounds like there's a whammy pedal on the drums or something. some nice riffs and drumming bust through at 3:00. the whole last two minutes of the track feel like a remixed ministry song, all cut-and-paste riffs and beats dropping in and out of the mix. it doesn't feel like a band playing. it feels like a computer spitting out random bits of melvins. and then, really annoying high-pitched bleeps take over your ears for the last minute, ruining the good groove the band is playing under all the sonic window dressing.
8)idolatrous apostate -- guess what, kids? more whooshing sounds. at this point, i want to deport lustmord to get him away from my favorite band. sound effects bullshit until about 3:00, then some bass notes, hi hat hits, and buzz's vocals pitched way down come in for some random bullshit along with some lustmord crap that sounds like tubas and distant out-of-tune violins.
9)untitled + hidden track -- more. fucking. reverby. thumps. wow. if this is ambient, you should give every construction worker a recording contract. i don't see anything interesting about this kind of shit. it just sounds like the sound effects from a godzilla movie or something. 2:30 to 4:30 is silence, and then there's this sampled orchestral bit that i know from SOMEWHERE, and i can't place it, but i was humming the melody right along with it. someone will figure this one out.
and that's it. the album ends. i would say there's only three real songs, but "pink bat" and "safety third" are ruined by bad production/mixing and the constant intrusion of lustmord, throwing his pointless noises over potentially great songs.
i don't know what to say -- real sorry to be so negative, but i'm not impressed, and i was really, really looking forward to this, too. "hostile ambient takeover" was so fucking awesome, i had hoped that they would follow it up with an equally great album, but this is like a cross between "honky" and the noise stuff from the amrep singles series.
not a good album. i get the feeling they blew their "rock" wad on the upcoming jello biafra collaboration, which would bum me out, because i'd rather hear buzz's voice any day. oh, well. i gotta respect the fact that they're taking chances and keeping things interesting. it's just too bad that it's not more enjoyable to listen to.
maybe you folks will see it differently. i'll be interesting to see your opinions.
Amazing reviews dudes.... but with those aside, time for what everybodies been waiting for.
Dr. Gonzo's review:
Dissapointing.
My first music release by the Melvins when I'm a fan.
Must find out what drug this and Lustmord's albums are supposed to be listened to on. (SERIOUSLY!)
3 songs, which are cool and kick ass melvins... but short of amazing.
the rest is mainly lustmord stuff. His noise seems to dominate this release although the Melvins (buzz) probably had a huge director's say over Lustmords doings. It's still ambient (crap).
Sounds like a Helios Creed release (Spacey) but fucking sucks in comparison. Anything by H.C. blows this away, since H.C. is GOD (Best comment in the review)
Wish I didn't listen to bloated pope a few times cause now it's really singelled out from the other tracks.
In Conclusion, will listen a few more times and then file it away with COD and Delirium Cordilla as albums I will not waste more time on. (ambient noise!)
Unless somebody tells me which drugs go with this shit! Somebody!?!? For godssakes hook a brother up with some info. I know the melvins still take some drugs.... What inspires this ambient stuff!!?!

I'll write your reviews for 50 bucks a piece.
HHmmm....
Gonzo, even though sometimes I think you are the prick of the board (which is OK, because you dare to call BS when you see it as opposed to the wise shotgun who contributes nada) I am certainly afraid that your review is right, especially since I loved the Bloated Pope so much. COD does not get played that much, although I like it. Electroretard is good for a few a spins and a few repeat songs. Prick I like, I just have no need to listen to it. Singles 1-12 is good for a few spins all the way through and a few repeat songs. I feel the same way about Crybaby. Lysol to me is the Melvins crowning glory followed by Stag. I have no choice but to wait until the bastard comes out before I buy it and then I can properly review it.
BUT...
At the same time, even if I end up agreeing with your review, I won't be dissapointed (sorry for the dismal spelling, some words just haunt me). Getting into the Melvins right before Stag, and having my first show be the 3 set (experimental/poppy/heavy) show, I learned early on that this is a band that will throw curveballs, and some stuff they do will be stuff that I probably will not completley (sorry again if the spelling is fucked) enjoy, but the fact that they never seem to do the exact same thing twice will make me come back every time. I have learned that I cannot be upset with each release, because you never know what the fuck these guys will do. I guess they are my favorite band, now that I think about it, even though they have released some shit that does not "make my pelvis move." I am pleased that I spent 65 bones that I could not really afford on an autographed book. I would not have done that for any other band.
-pause from sucking dick-
Then again I am reminded of what Buzzo said to my friend Schlong as he was autographing Honky on the '97 Helmet tour.
"Did you buy this?" Yes "I'm sorry!"
Thanks for the review Gonzo
I hope you get to see them this tour :D Portland got fucked
has anyone here heard a record called "dark side of the moon"?
listen to that record and shut the fuck up, this is original music.
they are trying to evolve from what they were before into something new and different and this is waht everyone should do...
expect the unexpected! youre a melvins fan goddammit!
by the way I love this son of a bitch!
I'm with Klump on this one. I'm a little shocked that some of you seemed to be expecting another HAT. Basically I think the Melvins had to make an album like this so it would be a contrast to HAT and the upcoming Jello collab.
Personally I really like 'Pigs...', someone said it sounds like a cross between Honky and Single 1-12 and I agree. But I love Honky for its ambient moments and Singles for the noise so this CD is perfect for me. The difference is the noise is a lot more controlled and sounds more professional, I imagine this is because Lustmord is providing the noise instead of Buzz. And the filtered instument effects are used in a really creative way.
Did anyone else think some of the ambient stuff sounds like a jam? And some of the songs have ended up more like digital dubs?
I have never heard an album like this before and I'm thankful the Melvins have managed to once again amaze me with their versatility and creativity.
I'm really glad I got to read a few reviews so I'll know what to expect from this album. I admit, I'm more into the 'rocking out' Melvins rather than the noise/experimental side. But, at the same time, I do realize that the Melvins are all about throwing curveballs at the listener. That's just who they are and I can appreciate that. I do know for a fact that if I bought this album expecting the majority of the material to be similar to "The Bloated Pope", I would have been disappointed.
I'm just wondering what live shows are going to be since I doudt they'll have all of lustmords sounds and effects.
i bet they are gonna be half record and half "regular" set. or maybe they are gonna just blast throught this album, with lustmord on a synth.
BRETT 3... what a faggot
Anyways... yes I am the prick of the board and take some pride in that because it seems many of you are holding back.
However.... Stag is my favourite Melvins CD, and I love electroretard, honky and crybaby. I listen to them still. And of course I know the Melvins throw curveballs... what do you take me for? I own every single album. They're are one of my favourite bands, definately.
Also, I do not hate this album.... it's good and all. Maybe I was too harsh (didn't feel any harsher than the review before me).
I was not expecting another HAT... it's just Like I said this album will unfortunatley be filled away with the others I mentioned.
I am still thankful for this release.... and hell we get another one soon. Can't wait!
Hey Gonzo, I didn't mean you regarding the HAT comment.
I didnt mean you either, i meant the users here in general :)
my message is going towards blacksanta, who thinks I enjoy not highly appreciating the new Melvins CD. (of couse I hate doing this, I have no choice though).... I'm just tying in other stuff.
i like pigs of the roman empire. but still...
old melvins > new melvins
imo
Hehe, the only song I've heard is The Bloated Pope. :D I don't know if I'm going to download it or not (either way, I'm definately buying it). But seeing as I love dark, experimental, ambient stuff, it sounds like I'm gonna like this record alot. :)
hate to say I told you so... :P i bet i'll still like it even though i
rightfully predicted dub versions of buzz's feedback loops long ago!
hey fart lips, the ftp upload didn't work man. its ok tho i'm buying it.
maybe. :o

yeah soulseek works with macs........ And I was going to say annaconda was partially right with his prediction (unfortunately) Not too much looping or cutting pasting though.
i've listened to it a few more times, now, and it's not getting any better. i was listening to it in my car today, and if you play "the bloated pope" next to "pink bat" or "safety third," the only other songs resembling actual rock songs, you can see clearly how fucked-up the mixes are on the latter two songs.
it's kinda like if the amrep singles version of "queen" had been actually released on stoner witch in place of the good version.
i'm actually a bit annoyed with this album. we wait three years for it, and then it's got only THREE "real" songs on it? and then the jello album, yeah, maybe it'll be cool, but it's not the melvins. i don't really even like jello biafra's voice. i want to hear buzz sing, something he only does on those three tracks on this album. it just seems like they've suddenly gotten lazy on us.
this album is not impressive, it's not even interesting. it's like they wrote one good song, two half-baked ones and a couple of random riffs, and they told lustmord to fill out the other 45 minutes with whatever he wanted.
i actually think that i like "prick" better than this album. at least that album had "larry" on it.
it's just that i listen to the melvins to hear really creative rock songs, not to hear 30-40 minutes of boring sound effects that mean nothing mixed with only three rock songs. that's a ripoff, to me. and, yeah, the melvins can do whatever they want, and that's great, but when their new album only has three actual songs on it? that's bullshit.
this is the first time i've disliked a new melvins album (i even saw the point of "colossus," and "honky" is one of my favorites). and it's not a good feeling. three real songs, two of which sound like crap? that's not worth much. they should price this album as an EP.
there will be people who think that this is some great step forward, or some adventurous album, but i'm not one of them. but then again, i've deleted everything i ever heard from lustmord. his "music" is utterly pointless, to me. i can get the same experience listening to a radiator clank or a washing machine hum. i want to hear cool songs done by a cool band. this album doesn't give you that.
hey gonzo..what were you directing toward me? i didn't say anything bad about you man..
what?
Hey Gonzo,
It's probably me, not Vc, that you are talking about. We both have tattoo avatars. And I don't take you to be anything other than a fan. I wasn't being critical of you or your review, I was posting my own feelings about the new album based off of your review of it. Sorry if you misunderstood me. Thanks again for the review.
i see you've edited your post and feigned confusion. that's okay..we are all liars on the inside. hee
Personally, I fucking love it.
I think an over-simplified review would read like this: if the Melvins/Fantomas Big Band recorded a studio album, it could sound like this.
album kicks ass
the new disc definitely has its moments...i don't know how anyone could possibly expect anything from these mates...
if there's one thing i've learned by listening to the melvins all these years, it's that you shouldn't presume what the next disc will sound like, simply because they'll knock you on your ass...of course, i'm sure most of you already knew that.
i won't review it at length and i won't say i don't like it...i will say, however, that it's not driving music. there's a couple moments i find myself cursing the existence of lustmord, but all in all, i think we all have to respect the fact that these two mesh very well together. the title track (i'm still confused as to why there is a title track on a melvins album after all these years) could easily have been the next 'lysol' if it wasn't for its lack of direction. i love that second interlude with the quicker drumbeat that phases in and out, but it's just a tease...the final few minutes is fantastic, but why did i just waste the first 15 or so minutes of my time? at least after 'lysol' i was fulfilled; my appetite was satiated...'the bloated pope' is the only real stand out HAT leftover track...
i do respect the collaboration...i do recognize that it's a natural evolution...i only hope that the reason why there's only 3 actual songs is because they'll be releasing a MELVINS album very soon.
i think everybody understands what they were doing with collossus...
they are the kings of suspense , and they are just tryiong to pull this to the extremes :D
safety third is a really nice track :)
the only track i think is kinda weak, was pink bat, but it wasnt as simple as i thought :)
ive heard this album about 7 times today (all the way, seriously) and now i get surprised everytime it stops.
this is certainly not a quickly thrown together thingy :)
listen to collossu after this and you will love it even more :)
but after this, i think we will hear some more "regular" stuff :)
PS. there are more than 3 real songs on there, just listen!
It sounds like The Bloated Pope is not a good representation of the album, like In The Freaktose The Bugs Are Dying is not a good representation of Honky.
So The Bloated Pope, Pink Bat and Safety Third are the only ones where Buzz signs? And are they the only ones that could be reduplicated live?
there are other songs with singing...you just have to be patient :)
i bet they will try to do some of the ambient stuff live to :)
which other songs have vocals? i only heard those three. and those three are the only real "songs" on there.
as for the people saying that you should never expect the melvins to do anything in particular, i disagree. i expect them to play their weird rock music. that's what i want to hear. that's why i keep buying their albums. i don't, however, want to hear thirty minutes of meaningless sound effects mixed in with three songs, two of which are produced like crap. and i'm not going to say it's some great step forward or some crap, because it's not. and i liked "colossus of destiny," mind you. why? because the melvins were making the sounds. here, it's some douche making clanging sounds and wind noises for most of the album, in the place of songs. whoop-de-fucking doo!
i wouldn't mind if we knew there was a so-called "real" melvins album on the way, but the next thing is the jello album, and i'd much rather hear buzz's vocals, any day.
shit, you'd think they'd have gotten this "collaboration" crap out of their systems on "the crybaby." wish they would've.
i don't know how anyone can sit and listen to the lustmord portions of this and NOT wish that they were listening to the melvins playing a song instead. it's been three years since they put out something new. i guess i just expected a lot more out of them than three songs (only one of which is worthy) and a bunch of pointless sound effects. and if you can't expect bands to make fucking albums, then what can you expect?
buzz, kevin and dale all have made noise oriented stuff, and i bet they have made a lot of this to, i think lustmord was more of a producer, and put his stuff in here and there :)
most of the stuff is pretty unLustmord sounding... cause its got a layer of something else there.. lustmord is just lurkinjg in the back and comes out to dance once a while :)
goddamn i love this album!
just listen MORE!
Quote from: tonyi don't know how anyone can sit and listen to the lustmord portions of this and NOT wish that they were listening to the melvins playing a song instead.
It's quite easy really considering the Melvins have a lot of albums out, so we already have a shed-load of 'songs' and they will always be there. HAT was
all songs, so 'Pigs...' was the next obvious step. And it's very new and fresh to my ears. Anyway, they'll be releasing another album in 2 months which I'm sure will be
all songs again (Although its with Jello), so don't panic.
safety third gives me shivers, it sounds like a pop song :) haha, an evil pop song...reminds me of twin peaks, i dont know why...
wtf does everyone have against jello?????
i don't have anything against him, but i'd rather the melvins made an album with buzz singing.
LouiLoomis, you're right that the melvins do have a huge backlog of quote-unquote "real songs," but the problem is that i've heard them all a million times! i want NEW "real songs," at this point. i don't want noises. i want songs. or, howabout this? they can do "real" songs, only with the noises integrated into them.
it's just, three years without an album, and then this? what a joke.
and if making an album with non-songs is the "obvious" next step after making an album of "real songs," then you'd better inform every other band in the world of this practice, because they're all doing it wrong! :)
yeah, there you got it! :)
Quote from: tonyif making an album with non-songs is the "obvious" next step after making an album of "real songs," then you'd better inform every other band in the world of this practice, because they're all doing it wrong! :)
LOL, ok 'obvious' step for the Melvins.
Houdini then Prick
Bullhead then Lysol (Hung Bunny and Second Coming)
Stoner Witch then Stag then Honky
Crybaby then Colossus of Destiny
I hope someone understands what I'm trying to get at with this. :(
"everything worth doing, is worth overdoing" :D

i get what you're saying -- you're saying that they follow up a more "traditional" album with a more "experimental" one. and i think that this may be somewhat true. but there's been three years between HAT and this one, whereas with those other albums, there was very little time between them. for instance, houdini and stoner witch came out in successive years! and if you look at stoner witch, stag, and honky -- that's three albums in three years. and i'd argue that honky is a much, MUCH better album than pigs of the roman empire is. because it actually features the melvins playing actual compositions for most of it. i could argue the same about the crybaby, even -- that album has more melvins music on it than this one does.
i dunno. fuck lustmord, i say.
people have different taste man :)
with their new album "pigs of the roman empire", the melvins have along with lustmord
painted an extremely colourful picture, and then erased the contours of the major areas,
making the picture looking like utter chaos. but after a few watches you fill in the dots yourself, and appreciate that you are free to do so. the melvins have again proved that they are the masters of suspense ,atmospheric and noisy music.
just because something is hard it doesnt mean its not worth doing...
Tony, why do you keep saying it's been 3 years since we got new Melvins? HAT came out in 2002. That's 2 years. Plus we got 26 Songs last year, the Neither Here Nor There book earlier this year, and when was the Salad Of A Thousand Delights released on DVD? It was just like a couple years ago. I don't see what your'e so upset about. The Jello album is coming soon, and I know you want to hear Buzz sing, but they've been mentioning a "remix" record, and a rerelease of The Mangled Demos for a while now. Hopefully those will come out next year.
Tony - I'm glad you understand what I was getting at. :D
Klump - You got it spot on!
Metalhead Cow - Good point
What does everyone think about Southern.com's comments about 'Pigs...' being the most 'Listener Friendly' album from the Melvins since Lysol?
I personally thought they were being sarcastic, but my girlfriend doesn't mind 'Pigs...' and she hates the Melvins. So what do you think?

oh, yeah, you're right. it was 2002. i was thinking it was 2001 for some reason. sorry.
but 26 songs, the book, and the salad DVD are all OLD shit -- i want new shit. and not new shit with jello biafra singing. and not old demos. and not remixes of old songs. i want a new melvins album featuring the melvins playing their actual compositions. i thought that lustmord would just be the noise element of this record (and "the bloated pope" seemed to confirm that), but he's really the star. and that sucks, because i don't see the point of what he does. it's literally just like listening to sound effects from a movie soundtrack out of context. there's no musicality to it. i guess i want to listen to music, not sound effects.
i suppose i really underestimated how much lustmord would have to do with this. i sure didn't think i'd have to listen to his bullshit for over half the album's running time, i know that much! :?
i dunno -- i can't make people see what i see, but i just listen to this album and i know that this kind of thing is not why i listen to this band. this is the first time i've ever felt cheated by them. if you hold this up next to HAT, stag, the maggot, stoner witch, bullhead, ozma, or lysol -- or virtually anything they've done -- it doesn't measure up.
You can tell buzz was really influienced by venemous concept and the new fantomas record. I dont like either of those though. Venemouc Concept blows ass and Delrium Cordia was a HUGE letdown.
Hopefully this will grow on me.
Thought it was interesting that Adam Jones was listed as a band member, not just guitar on such and such a track.
i think the only thing wrong with the album is the title track, which unfortuantely takes up 23 minutes of the albums length...even the part where the melvins actually start playing something over lustmords bullshit sucks, its a boring song and it should have been cut down to make room for more songs like safety third and toadi acceleratio and the bloated pope and well any other song on the album

After listening to the whole thing, I've got to say that I'm really impressed. I really like this record, perhaps even more so than Honky. I knew I'd heard that riff from the title track somewhere before as soon as I heard it, but where? Maybe they played it on the film soundtrack tour..???

i don't do drugs, myself, and i love almost every melvins album except for this one. i also think earth and sunn are pretty much useless -- i don't really care to listen to people play unaccompanied riffs, because it just takes no effort. and let's not get into how much i think lustmord is a joke. i've deleted much better albums than the ones i had of lustmord's.
honestly, what's "impressive" about this album, really? it takes NO talent to turn on a machine and get it to make wind noises. in the past, the melvins have used ambient noise as a texture, not as the main focus, and they've used it appropriately, as something to make their songs more interesting-sounding. here, it's the main focus, and it's not even them doing it!
i guess this album is for people who like to listen to vaccuum cleaners and malfunctioning smoke alarms, not music.
noise has its place on every melvins album. so does quiet ambience. but the main reason i listen to the melvins is to hear them rock. this album is way too short on that.
i was listening today, again -- you guys have to try listening to track 2, and then going to "safety first" and then back again. that song just sounds like SHIT. if it had been produced better, that and "pink bat," this album would be much better.
as it stands, i like "prick" better, at this point. imagine that!

HELL no. i listened to that worthless thing once, and that was enough.
Quote from: tonyQuote from: Metalhead CowTony, why do you keep saying it's been 3 years since we got new Melvins? HAT came out in 2002. That's 2 years. Plus we got 26 Songs last year, the Neither Here Nor There book earlier this year, and when was the Salad Of A Thousand Delights released on DVD? It was just like a couple years ago. I don't see what your'e so upset about. The Jello album is coming soon, and I know you want to hear Buzz sing, but they've been mentioning a "remix" record, and a rerelease of The Mangled Demos for a while now. Hopefully those will come out next year.
oh, yeah, you're right. it was 2002. i was thinking it was 2001 for some reason. sorry.
but 26 songs, the book, and the salad DVD are all OLD shit -- i want new shit. and not new shit with jello biafra singing. and not old demos. and not remixes of old songs. i want a new melvins album featuring the melvins playing their actual compositions. i thought that lustmord would just be the noise element of this record (and "the bloated pope" seemed to confirm that), but he's really the star. and that sucks, because i don't see the point of what he does. it's literally just like listening to sound effects from a movie soundtrack out of context. there's no musicality to it. i guess i want to listen to music, not sound effects.
i suppose i really underestimated how much lustmord would have to do with this. i sure didn't think i'd have to listen to his bullshit for over half the album's running time, i know that much! :?
i dunno -- i can't make people see what i see, but i just listen to this album and i know that this kind of thing is not why i listen to this band. this is the first time i've ever felt cheated by them. if you hold this up next to HAT, stag, the maggot, stoner witch, bullhead, ozma, or lysol -- or virtually anything they've done -- it doesn't measure up.
okay, fair enough
I'm going to wait until the album is released to hear it. It would be interesting to hear a song to song review from the people who like the album (that's you klump, LuiLoomis  ), so I can hear both sides of the controversy. :P
Hehe, I just have to throw this in. Here's a Buzz quote:
*talking about Pigs*
"I don't know, I think it's great. If you don't like it, there's something wrong with you. *laughs*"
Who else listened to that interview?
where can I hear/download this interview???

OK then, let's take Collossus of Destiny, a record which aside from a snippet of Eye Flys contains not one shred of 'rock'. In my humble opinion, this record is clearly more focused and structured than that. Collossus sounds like something an avant-garde music lover with a free samples CD could make on his laptop, while this is a clearly different kettle of fish. Is your problem the fact that Lustmord provides the noises rather than the Melvins? If so, are you pissed off that Adam Jones is part of the band this time around as well?

Where on Prick, Collossus and even Honky do the Melvins 'rock' more than on this record? I'd say that Bloated Pope and Safety Third are two of the most straight ahead rock tracks that the band has ever penned, but the point of this album isn't just to 'rock', it's an atmospheric record. Might I suggest that if you want non-stop slamdancing you should try the latest Hatebreed album?

What's wrong with Prick? 'Tis a fine record...I even prefer it to Ozma. But that's besides the point. About the production of Safety Third, Buzz's voice is drenched in effects to render it as part of the musical scenery rather than the bellowing bull-vocals of Bloated Pope. Listen to the way in which III leads in to Bloated and then that in turn gives way to Toadi, it's the way convention is played with and then spiralled away from.
I think rather than listening to this record while you drive, it'd be an idea to just put it on at home, relax and listen to it without longing for Bullhead to break in...it really is more impressive than you give it credit.
I'm hoping it'll grow on me, cause at a first glance I'm not too impressed with 70% of the album.
Is it just me or does Safety third sound way too much like Ministry.
IMO Lustmord can get the fuck out.
Metalhead Cow - I'll post a track by track review when I get back from the Bulldog Bash on Sunday. That means I'm going to have to leave Klump and the Reverend in charge of defending this album. Good luck guys!

"colossus" was very clearly meant to be a different kind of release for the band, and it came after a flood of new music. plus, it was a live album. and the fans knew in advance that it was supposed to be a different kind of thing.
but, yeah, a big problem is that there are large stretches on this album where lustmord does his boring shit while kevin plays a bass note here or there or something. this is not interesting in the slightest. as for adam jones being a part of the band, i can't speak to that. haven't seen the liner notes, yet.

"prick" has the song "larry," which is better than both the songs you mentioned, in my mind. and i guess i'd rather listen to the melvins making noise than lustmord. at least their noise does something rather than just sitting there going "WHOOOOOOSHHHHHHHH" or sitting on one keyboard note for an hour.
hatebreed, funny. no thanks. but my point is that the melvins are a ROCK BAND. they should play ROCK MUSIC. they shouldn't put three real songs on an album and fill the rest with bullshit. and if they're going to sneak by with only three real songs, then they should try to make them not sound like shit, which is the case with "pink bat" and "safety first." seriously, put on "the bloated pope," the only redeemable song on the album, and then put on "safety first." it sounds like shit.
QuoteWhat's wrong with Prick? 'Tis a fine record...I even prefer it to Ozma. But that's besides the point. what's wrong with prick? umm, it's a load of horseshit, essentially. if you like it more than ozma, you're retarded. or you really like listening to the noise of a crowd better than incredibly well-written, creative rock songs. but i don't listen to this band to hear anything but the BAND playing MUSIC.
and your comments about safety third lead me to believe that you're not listening. the vocals are not the problem. it's the way the kick is mixed super-loud, the guitars super-low, and the sound effects take over. and it does sound like a bad ministry remix at the end, too.
i've got no problem with the first three tracks of the album. i was still excited upon first listen as i went through them. it's when it became clear that the album was not going to get better that things started looking bad.
QuoteI think rather than listening to this record while you drive, it'd be an idea to just put it on at home, relax and listen to it without longing for Bullhead to break in...it really is more impressive than you give it credit.
the first time i listened to it, i laid on the couch, shut off the lights, and put my headphones in. and it sucked. so i decided to try and rock it in the car. it still sucked.
i only wish they were as focused as they were on bullhead with this record. filling an album with a bunch of B-movie sound effects and a few poorly-recorded half-songs is fucking easy. writing 8 songs that are complicated and weird, but still rocking? that's not.
i bet you prefer caravggio over duchamp?
yyou can't label the melvins. well maybe a shitload of stuff: noise/alternative/grunge/metal/experimental/rock
They're not a straight up Rock band.
So don't expect straight up rock.
I haven't listened to this album since my first time :(
I feel no need to.
I want to read / hear some interviews about this album.

i would say that the melvins might not be a "straight up" rock band, but they're surely a rock band. they're not jazz -- they've toured with tool and kiss and nirvana.
they have elements of all kinds of stuff, but they are a rock band first and foremost.
theres a rock in there :P
i dont know how many times ive listened to it now :)
Alright, just quickly popping in before I hit the road. Tony, your comments about the Melvins being a rock band so therefore they should just play rock is absolute shit! It's definitley not fair to label the Melvins and I'm sure 99% of the people who post here would agree. Which means you really can't comment this new album fairly, cause your opinion about the Melvins (which is wrong) makes you biased. I'm sorry you didn't get HAT part 2 because now you're wasting your time trying to make people dislike this album.
tony is just like a younger me when they robbed us with the COD release
but over time it does grow on you, and knowing the parties involved
going into this assignment, and the dual credit on the album i think you should love this for what it is! almost a tragic epic of failed attempts that are still so fucking beautiful! this is like a better honky, or singles 1-12
got it today and i'm flying on this groove, these wind sounds etc are not samples! these sound like source takes at locations, and then manipulated.
pink bat is an itchy kind of song for me, I like it BEST!
tx to klump and his betty who hooked the conda nasty up! now theres TWO of me! anacondas! in theatres not near you, NOW!

yeah they played the last riff during the first film "Kranky Claus". This shit sounds amazing live.
This is deffinately my favorite track of the record. Especially with the boombastic BOOOOOOOOOM lustmord throws in every time the riff repeats itself in the last part....quality

i never said that they should "just play rock." look back, and you'll see that. what i did say is that they should "play rock," meaning they should'nt put out a bullshit album like this one, an album that's over half noise. they should make goddamned MUSIC, which is why i listen to them. it's silly to think that anyone would want a good band to put out an album full of white noise instead of songs, but yet there will be those who defend bands for doing anything, no matter what. they're called "apologists."
and, how is it "not fair" to "label" the melvins as a "rock band"? that's what they are. bass, guitar, drums, vocals. they play rock music. i don't like them because i like rap or polka. or formless, nonmusical noise.
and, what? my opinion is wrong? um, that statement is quite amusing, to say the least. and i'm not trying to get people to "dislike" this album. i'm simply stating that i don't see much about this album that is redeemable. one good rock song, a pointless jammy instrumental, a bunch of static sounds, a few random riffs, and two poorly written/recorded/mixed sub-par rock songs does not an album make.
really, who honestly wants to sit around and listen to this lustmord shit? it does nothing. it means nothing. it goes nowhere. it takes no effort. i know a million other people who could do that shit in their sleep.
the melvins could record an album full of the sound of a car's engine idling, and i'd bet that someone would defend it.
Quote from: LouiLoomisTony, your comments about the Melvins being a rock band so therefore they should just play rock is absolute shit!
Stop, breathe, and think for one fucking second.
Read his posts again 'cause you're clearly overlooking his point and putting words in his mouth.
Quotenow you're wasting your time trying to make people dislike this album
Talk about fucking double standards, here you and a few others go on a fucking crusade and just wont suck it in that some people just got a bit dissapointed with the new record and you just have to turn them around.
Let everyone have their opinion. Jesus.
It's OKAY not to like EVERYTHING the melvins put out.
I'm not trying to turn anyone around. But it sounds like a lot of you have problems with the Melvins trying to do something new. I still don't think it's fair that you think they 'should play rock music'. I'm not sure if you're aware the Melvins don't always limit themselves to just guitar, bass and drums (please listen to Stag). I'm glad you found me saying 'your opinion was wrong' amusing, as I was joking.
Also I'm not a so-called "apologist" as I have never defended 'Prick' or 'Message Saved 7"
Please everyone! read my post - this is a better Honky,
but it's definitely nowhere near Bullhead or any of the more straight ahead "rock" albums the Melvs have done.
Don't get me wrong! I fast forward thru half of pigs of the roman empire to get to a nice bass riff, or to safety but on the whole its the melvs AND lustmord, not just a true "Melvins only appear on this" kind of thing.
I agree that it is flawed but its nice if you dont sit and concenrate on each bit, just let it wash over you while you play acoustic guitar or hit a bong
Fuck you man!
Honky is one of the Melvins best.
Honky fucking rules!
HONKYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honky rules my anus... That's one great album.
FUCK you man! Fucking honky puts the new one to shame.
How dare you!
How dare!

The new album is awesome and all..... I like pink bat and safety 3rd much more that the bloated pope.
Alright dude... I'll strum the acoustic well I listen... great f'n plan.
"Fuck the man, and fuck the plan." - love 666.

Why is that silly? I like "noise" albums, and several bands that I like (including not just the MELVINS, but also Sonic Youth, Royal Trux, and Mike Patton) have made them and I hope they make more. If I thought those albums were not well done, I wouldn't defened them. If you just said you didn't like it, that's one thing, but you accused the band of "ripping you off". That means you think that the band threw something together to steal money from fans and we're all dupes for goin' along with it. That's not the case. I reallly do listen to and enjoy albums like
Collosus Of Destiny ,
Prick,

Honkey which is one of my favorite MELVINS albums make me very excited.
It's funny that you seem to think of
HAT as a "rock" album 'cause to me it's just as much a "noise" album. There's tons of noise all over it.
Quotereally, who honestly wants to sit around and listen to this lustmord shit? it does nothing. it means nothing. it goes nowhere. it takes no effort. i know a million other people who could do that shit in their sleep.
I do. I also really interested in tryin' Lustmord's other stuff. I also have several friends who are way into it. I'm lookin' foreward to this new album partly because I think it's gonna be a good way to turn them onto the MELVINS. Don't be so quick to write off sound collage albums. While thy're not musical in the "normal" sense they are put together to create moods, build to a climax, and create feeling for the listener. It's far more difficult than you give it credit for. If it really is that easy for you, you might have a real gift for it. I suggest you try.
It's not just that you didn't like the album. That's fine. If you don't "get" it that's fine too. Without even hearin' it it's obvious that it's not for everyone. You went farther than that and insulted everyone who does like it, the artists who made it, and albums like it and that's gonna get an angry response.
I was really disappointed with the Bloated Pope.
But after reading this thread - especially tony's comments - I can't wait for this. It sounds like an ace LP. I get bored of 'straight' stuff real quickly.
i cant get enough of it!

now, hold on. i can enjoy a "noise" album, depending on the case. the mike patton solo albums are impressive for what they are -- his vocal ability is unique. pigs of the roman empire is lacking in quality material, though. this is because they've chosen to let lustmord have so much space to himself, rather than collaborating with him in a true fashion for the album, on actual compositions. this album feels, to me, like a glorified EP. and a weak one, at that.
i'm pretty sure i actually didn't accuse the band of "ripping me off." if you can find a quote from me, i'll admit it, but i don't think i used those words. do i feel that way? i guess i don't know. i do know that they've given me enough quality over the years that i can't really get on their asses too much. but this album, aside from sounding rote and uninspired, sounds like they got lazy. and that's a word i don't associate with them, ever.
but, i will say this: if you don't think that the melvins have never actually pulled one over on people and ripped them off, as far as content goes, you've never heard the grumpy's amrep singles.
QuoteI reallly do listen to and enjoy albums like Collosus Of Destiny , Prick, Adult Themes For Voice and Twin Infinitves.. it's funny, i think colossus had a point, and it was worth a few spins, but it's a diversion, as far as i'm concerned. and that's fine. prick has some good moments on it -- "larry" is a great song, and the noise tracks are fairly interesting. "honky"? well, that's in my top five melvins albums, believe it or not. it's well-written and played, and the production is GREAT. but this is NO honky.
i can appreciate the melvins' use of noise and ambient sound. i can also appreciate it when they do albums that are more along those lines. but the problem here is that lustmord is a SHITTY collaborator who has never done anything worthwhile, in my mind. i've listened to his albums. and i honestly can't imagine what purpose he serves. he's not even really making music. i guess i like music, what can i say. if i want to listen to noise, i can go to a tractor pull.
having said that, the integration of nonmusical noise INTO a composition can be very interesting, and the melvins have usually triumphed in this area. this time, it's a failure, i think.
QuoteIt's funny that you seem to think of HAT as a "rock" album 'cause to me it's just as much a "noise" album. There's tons of noise all over it.
god, HAT is utterly rock. yeah, there's noise there. but it's as part of a song. and, man, any album with "brain center," "black stooges," and "little judas chongo," among others...shit, that's rock with a capital R.
"noise," to me, is freeform and nonmusical. like the sound of an electric razor or the hum of traffic.
Quotereally, who honestly wants to sit around and listen to this lustmord shit? it does nothing. it means nothing. it goes nowhere. it takes no effort. i know a million other people who could do that shit in their sleep.

well...i've actually put out freeform-style music before, so-called "noise" music, but i wouldn't see the point in doing a lustmord-type album. his stuff is like listening to the ocean. of course, there ARE people that want to do that. don't ask me why. maybe because they live in the desert, i dunno. but i want to hear songs. i want to hear musicianship. that's it. and i don't listen to my favorite bands because they make albums full of half-songs and pointless, flat sounds.
but, man, hitting a low note on a synth and setting a reverb box for a long decay, it's just simple. clanging on a chime -- simple. it's like lustmord's albums, to me, are like listening to a guy tune his guitar for an hour. there's just nothing there. it's so basic as to be pointless, devoid of meaning.
QuoteIt's not just that you didn't like the album. That's fine. If you don't "get" it that's fine too. Without even hearin' it it's obvious that it's not for everyone. i would actually make an argument that a lot of so-called "noise" recordings are totally just like sound effects records for people to take drugs to and put on in the background. i can understand that. but it doesn't mean anything to me. i got into the melvins on houdini, and i loved how they mixed huge, weird rock songs with crazy noise bits. it was so fresh, to my ears. but this album, the scales have really tipped too far. the noise isn't interesting (it's literally STATIC, a lot of the time), and the actual songs (all three of them) are so sub-par that it's hard to imagine them actually putting any effort into them (save "the bloated pope," which is a pretty good melvins tune, but sadly is not indicative of the album at all).
i don't think i've quite insulted anyone. i've just been saying what i feel, and i've been honest. i think this album is a big turd. i just wish the upcoming jello album was just a melvins album. i'd be less annoyed.
Wow Tony you said a mouthfull! I also think you made a lot of good points. I still haven't heard POTRE and won't until I can buy it but I definitely have enough ammunition to start to form an opinion. The thing I agree w/ you most on Tone is about the Jello lp being all Melvins. Maybe they will surprise us and bust out Making Room For Puppies after all.
tony, why dont you just take all this spare time you have on your hands and give the record a second spin?(or a third)
Quote from: klumptony, why dont you just take all this spare time you have on your hands and give the record a second spin?(or a third)
tony wanted this record more than a steak and a blowjob, but it wasnt what he was expecting. to him, its more like a turd and dildo. sorry there tony. thats the melvins, unexpected.
i thought it was kind of a mix of all of those :D
The title track has one of the greatest riffs I've heard in ages. Awesome :D
said it before an ill say it again.. the title track owns this record
word
melvins are gay, pass it on. :o
i love pigs!

i've listened to the album AT LEAST ten times. but it's not getting any better. and why would it? wind noises, whirrs, and clanks don't get better with time. i'm probably done listening until i buy the official copy. yes, i'm buying it. why? because it's the melvins, and i have everything of theirs.
i've been buying melvins albums since 1994, when i first saw them live, opening for NIN. i've never been disappointed in an album with their name on it unitl now. trust me, i expect the unexpected with them. but i also expect quality. this is the first time i've felt that one of their albums qualified as "half-assed." yeah, it's "experimental," whatever the hell that means. only problem is that it fails to be interesting. but there are those people who would buy a melvins album with one song and the rest the sound of a locomotive, and they wouold say that it was a great step forward. not i. there comes a point where musicians should play music. and this album denies you the thing that makes the melvins great -- the sound of the three of them playing their always-creative songs. if you are impressed by lustmord, i can't convince you otherwise. but i would imagine that you're probably just as impressed by the noises the espresso machine at starbucks makes. :P
yeah, the riff in "pigs" is a great riff. but that's it -- it's just a riff. there's no song, there. it's like a part of an great unfinished song. and that's the way this album feels to me -- half-cooked, unfinished, lazy, tossed-off. hopefully the jello album rules enough to make me forget this, but there's going to have to be very little in the way of mr. biafra on that album to make this so.
He's right this stuff does not grow unless you pertend it does!
The key is use it as background music like Annaconda said.
Can anyone put SHN or MP3 of this album on SOULSEEK?
T_H_A_N_K Y_O_U !!
Beto did u get my email?
tony made one good point, HAT is a definite rocker!!
pigs is no HAT but its a two headed monster becuz
it isnt 100% melvins. you have to judge it as a 2 artist
thing. i want an all new 100% melvins album so bad
i'm shitting! but they fuck with us like this, it keeps us
aware and expecting and ready for the legit all melvs
rock trio noise screech bottom heavy screaming butterfly
limping midget son of a bitch nasty polish guy 100% all
melvins album thats surely coming!!!
They'll probably still come out with all-Melvins albums soon enough. Probably like 2005 I'm guessing. I think they're just on a collaboration and side-project kick:
Buzz - Fantomas (Delirium Cordia and new album next year)
Buzz - Venomous Concept
The Melvins and Jello Biafra
The Melvins and Lustmord
I guess they just like to work with a lot of other musicians outside their bands, kinda like Dave Grohl with all his drumming guest spots he's done. But they'll probably have a Melvins-exclusive album next year which I'm guessing.
i bet the next all melvins record will be a calm country record
Quote from: Lunicai bet the next all melvins record will be a calm country record
Not if they didnt want to be accused of ripping off ween.
Which by the way, is the best ween/country album ever.
anyways, I think the problem with the album is, like tony said, the melvins and lustmord arent working together enough. The bloated pope is the a good example of them working together. Rock but with noise. The title track is the best example of them not workign together. It doesnt even flow together. Its like stuff thrown down by lustmord, then stuff thrown down by the melvins. It has no flow, no build up, nothing. Its dull to me.
But the album isnt super shitty, its just a bit dissapointing.
I'll buy it anyways
I'm still really looking forward to buying the album and making my own opinions. :) Fuck, August 24, is SO far away!
At least I'm getting a track by track review tommarow by LuieLoomis! :D

Yeah, plus Kevin in Tomahawk and Teenage Larvae, and Dale in Altamont. And The Crybaby and the Melvins/Fantomas live record.
I've never heard of Teenage Larvae. interesting
i can't find it on soulseek...
can anyone hook me up to hold me over till it comes out??
Quotewell...i've actually put out freeform-style music before, so-called "noise" music, but i wouldn't see the point in doing a lustmord-type album. his stuff is like listening to the ocean. of course, there ARE people that want to do that. don't ask me why. maybe because they live in the desert, i dunno. but i want to hear songs. i want to hear musicianship. that's it. and i don't listen to my favorite bands because they make albums full of half-songs and pointless, flat sounds.
but, man, hitting a low note on a synth and setting a reverb box for a long decay, it's just simple. clanging on a chime -- simple. it's like lustmord's albums, to me, are like listening to a guy tune his guitar for an hour. there's just nothing there. it's so basic as to be pointless, devoid of meaning.
Quote
i would actually make an argument that a lot of so-called "noise" recordings are totally just like sound effects records for people to take drugs to and put on in the background. i can understand that. but it doesn't mean anything to me. i got into the melvins on houdini, and i loved how they mixed huge, weird rock songs with crazy noise bits. it was so fresh, to my ears. but this album, the scales have really tipped too far. the noise isn't interesting (it's literally STATIC, a lot of the time), and the actual songs (all three of them) are so sub-par that it's hard to imagine them actually putting any effort into them (save "the bloated pope," which is a pretty good melvins tune, but sadly is not indicative of the album at all).
dude i can totally understand your point. but at the same time i really enjoy lustmords work. i haven't heard the album yet so im not basing my opinion on that but im just giving you my opinion on certain ambience in general. ambient music seems easy to make and everyone can do it...i know...lets take this into consideration : i made a cd of ambience and then i let my friend who swore it was easy, do a cd of ambience..he finished it in like a week...about the same amount of time it took me to do it...i gave both cds to an ambient music fan and asked him which one he liked...he didnt like my friends at all....
ambience is all about mood. its not really about construction..its more about arrangement..certain textures evoke different emotions and sometimes ambient artists who have no idea what they are doing end up sounding totally generic..
the stuff lustmord did may be total shit on this album, like is said i havent heard it yet....but there is ambient music out there that i have much respect for...some of it has a bit more of a pulse to it than lustmords stuff...but, lustmord writes some fucking horrifying ambient shit...no other music really scares me...so i think that is definately an accomplishment...his way of arrangement, close attention to texture and detail and dynamic in his compositions are very sophisticated and really really interesting in my opinion...
but what it really comes down to is whether or not you like it...if you don't you don't..but i don't think its fair to label ambient artists as hacks...ive made some ambient music that im very proud of...
I don't think it's really fair to decide that all of the ambient noises are Lustmord's and all of the "rock" is the MELVINS. Quite a bit of the "noise" is consistant with stuff the MELVINS were doin' Collosus Of Destiny, HAT, Electroretard, and Honky and some of the "rock" (including "The Bloated Pope") reminds me of some of the more "rock" parts of the one Lustmord album I've heard (I think it's called "Paradise Denied"). I don't think the noises on POTRE sound slapped on in the least. To me the record definately builds a mood and creates a great dark and spooky yet fun atmosphere (much like a good horror movie, does this album remind anyone else of Goblin?). I think the naysayers so far are not "getting it" (appologies, I hate that overused phrase, but it fits here). I seriously cannot imagine why someone familiar with The MELVINS (especially if they are also familiar with Lustmord) would be surprised by this record.
While I defineatly want another new 100% MELVINS record, I think all this collaboration stuff is great, and I even want more. Bring on "Mike and The MELVINS"!
While there's defineatley some serious rockin' on HAT I bet if you did a minute to minute count (I'm too Lazy), there's more "noise".
i finally found it on soulseek...
ego, i totally agree man..i don't like to say it either but it seems people aren't really grasping this release..
i definately hear TONS of collaboration between the melvins and lustmord..it doesn't sound divided at all...there are shining points for both contributors, yes...but you can hear lots of what sounds like lustmord over some of the more rocking stuff and vice versa....i think this cd is great...it doesn't sound cut up at all...i think it all gels together really well..
the only song that kind of sounds choppy is one transition in the title track...the rest flows very nicely...ive heard about 80 percent so far and i love all of it...even if i dont like the other 20 percent as much, which doesn't seem likely, i still say its a strong release. buzz doesn't do as many vocals but the instrumental parts kick major ass and what lustmord does to carry the songs makes up for it..
the title track fucking owns
is this recorded digital?
could someone please tell me what is MIKE AND THE MELVINS?
mike kunka of godheadSilo, im shure you would LOVE godheadSilo, go to www.godheadsilo.com and download Relationshit and Chuckanut overdrive, you will be bedazzled!
and frazzled!
they are on my top five bands list! :D
turnacus told me to download you must pay and im bedazzled fer sure (whatever it means :))
(hey turnacus, im not sure if i told you that, but the cows is a killer)
Mike and the Melvins was a project they collaborated with the above mentioned Mike Kunka, and it had Buzz, Mike, and Kevin all playing bass. I don't know if it's simultaneously though. It was recorded about 3 years ago, and Buzz still hasn't gotten around to finish the vocals as far as I've heard.
The project wasn't really brought up much in interviews, but none of the members said it was cancelled. So who knows, it might come out some day.
Cool guys, I guess I finally know what the Mike and Melvins thing is. I've never heard of godheadSilo before. I've downloaded those songs from their website, and I've listened to them both. I'm not impressed at all... :?
The Crybaby
Melvins/Fantomas
Pigs Of The Roman Empire

Mike and Melvins project thing
Man, the Melvins have really been going through a collaberation phase, for the past few years! I had heard about the Mike thing, but I completely forgot about it. It's interesting that they've been working on this for three years. Three bass players? Really interesting. Hopefully it'll turn out good, but I'm not impressed with the godheadSilo MP3s.
i've never heard any godheadsilo stuff, but if it does get released, it would probably have more of buzz's ideas than mike's so i wouldn't be worried about it.
i heard some of dead low tide's stuff, and eh it's ok...
dead low tide has two or three GOOD songs and the rest is...hmmm
godheadSilo really kicks ASS, check out Skyward in triumph, Sharing the fantasy and the Elephantitus of the night cds :D
they are absolutely "wicked" as the gents in great brit says
event hough they are kinda one sided, but who cares!
i liked enemymine better than godheadsilo, but both are good.
dammit! now i have a wild ghs craze! im listening to everything by them nonstop, forwards, backwards, sidewards, inverted, imploded, exploded, immacualted masterbated pretend to like my sense o0f smell

I'll tell you why: they're co-produced by Joe Preston (under the name of P. Dohye). And that's a fact. I LOVE GHS and Enemymine.
i knew that :) i have all of their stuff, but i think enemymine gets a little bit to cold for me...but so does ghs...hmm why cant these fellas find a balance? maybe their new project will work better?
smoke and smoke :O)
i have heard some and i think it sounds cool :O)
Who are Dead Low Tide?
Quote from: LouiLoomisMetalhead Cow - I'll post a track by track review when I get back from the Bulldog Bash on Sunday. That means I'm going to have to leave Klump and the Reverend in charge of defending this album. Good luck guys!
It's Monday now.
Sorry it's late, but I've been feeling a bit rough since the weekend. and I've tried to stay away from computer monitors for that reason. Anyways here we go...
III - This is really just an intro for the album that is made up of noises. The noises start building up with the wind sounds getting louder and some bell like sounds being introduced. Which takes us into...
The Bloated Pope - You've all heard this one so there's no need for me to explain, except the fact is the most 'traditional' Melvins track on here and it's a great song.
Toadi Acceleration - This instrumental is very eastern sounding with the occassional filtered guitar being added. I really like this track as I find it really relaxing and the use of noises and the eastern percussion are used in a very creative way. And it keeps getting darker and darker.
Pigs Of The Roman Empire - Is my favourite track at the moment. Usually I get fed up with long ambient jams, but this one doesn't bore me at all. In fact every time I listen to this I hear new sounds buried in the background. The introduction of 'that' riff keeps everything moving along nicely. There are occassional silences so the track can fade back in with a slightly new variation. It doesn't seem like it goes on for 22 minutes so thats got to be a good thing, right?
Pink Bat - Was my least favourite song on here, but it's just 'clicked'. I first thought it was a lame attempt at something in the vein of The Maggot. But I now realise there is an awful lot going on in this song and it rocks. Buzz's voice is sounding as evil as ever here. Towards the end it sounds like Melvins vs Lustmord, heavy and noisey.
Zzzz Best - This is basically an intro for Saftey Third. Kinda like Lustmord doing a dub of Dale and Kevin playing in free time. Intresting stuff.
Saftey Third - My second favourite song. This is a really rocking track, with Lustmord contributing loads of effects and noises but without getting in the way. It's almost like a remix of the Melvins, and I love the use of delay on Buzz's vocals (keeps jumping left and right with tons of modulation) A really unique song.
Idolatrous Apostate - Basically a Lustmord drone track with Buzz talking through a pitch-shifter (low voice) in parts. Definitly an outro sounding track.
that was pretty accurate description of what I feel about that record to!!! holy shit! telepathy??
thanks, LouiLoomis!
Thanks for the thanks, guys!
Thanks a lot Louie! What's the Untitled + hidden track like? :)
The Untitled + Hidden track starts with silence then goes into a little bit noise for a bit then silence again before finishing with some waltz-ish sounding music. Nothing important really, it just makes me look around the room wondering where its coming from (cause I forget it's still playing)
*hug*
Now playing-The Bloated Pope

i have found a big resemblance in the sound of this record, speaking of the musical elements pertaining to the melvins is very reminisent of the maggott record which i absoulutely am thrilled about. that record kicked my ass the first time i heard it and still does to this day. i give the pigs record a big thumb up the ass!

As all of you did, I rushed out to get Pigs of the Roman Empire today. After one listen, I have to say that I was sorta indifferent to it. It seemed like I was constantly waiting for the song to break into "full-on" mode. Almost like the whole CD is an introduction for the next CD. I quickly realized, though, that Hostile Ambient Takeover didn't blow me away right away either, and I've since come to feel like it is one of the Melvins' best. One smartass friend of mine has already thrown out the words "Colossus of Destiny", but he's a jerk.... I have a feeling that "Pigs..." will, upon repeated listens, will grow on me more and more as I start hearing things I didn't hear the time before. Let's face it, the Melvins aren't always easy to listen to, and that's what makes them badass. I have unwavering faith in King Buzzo and Co. I'm sure I will be proudly bumping Pig of the Roman Empire to everyone within earshot soon....

What I think is funny was how everyone was really, really down on Pigs before it was even released and now that it's here everyone seems to be coming around. To all naysayers I say simply listen to the 20 minute plus title track and all doubts should fade away

nope, this album still sucks. wake me when the melvins come out with an album full of actual music instead of vaccuum cleaner noises, booms, clanks, random kick drum hits, and ministry remixes.
fuck lustmord.
ahahahhaha...
THe albums alright.
But seriously people are highly overating it!
I'm angry about this.
Pertending the album is amazing, that's pretty damn lame.
I don't want to hear some shit like "maybe you don't get it..." or "you're a dumbass!"
I could honestly run into my room at full speed, trip and fall knocking my 100's of CDs over. Guaranteed, whatever I end up with my hand on is a CD that owns this new Melvins release.
I'm listening to the Colonel Claypool's bucket of Bernie Brains CD right now.... brand new. WELL actually only the first track has finished downloading, but the rest is on the way! I have a feeling this will be one of the best albums in a long time..... the first track rules.
The Big Eyeball in the Sky!
I can't belive how poorly mixed the album is at times.
It's almost like they forgot to master a few songs.
But there are are a few bright moments on there, far from the quality they usually put out though.
Is Buzzo getting lazy?

i'm glad someone else noticed this. i posted about this a few weeks ago. if you put "safety third" or "pink bat" on right next to "the bloated pope" (the only good-sounding song on the album), it's extremely evident.
i'm sure they did it on purpose, but that doesn't mean i think it works. rather, i think it takes songs that could've been cool and makes them sound so bad as to ruin the song completely. somehow i blame this on lustmord, too.

i totally agree with you. i'm trying to think of an album that i enjoy less than this one, and i'm really having trouble. maybe lustmord's solo albums or maldoror or merzbow i like less. but that shit isn't even music, so it shouldn't count.

Hey Tony, nice to see you're still sticking to your guns, but does sound quality really prevent you from enjoying the song? That's sad if it does.
The track III sounds like the "you opened the box" sound in the Hellraiser/Hellbound films.

why would that be "sad"? if a decent song sounds like shit, it's hard for me to enjoy it. what's so hard to understand about that?
"why cant we just get along????!?!!!!"
I like it alot. But I don't think it's something I will play over and over again. It's a sit down and listen album, not something to rock out to. A good journey, especially on headphones with mushies, which I did last night :hal: . Evil.....But it's far to dense and artsy to become a daily player like HAT or Stag or Honky etc. Don't expect anything from this band and you shall be amazed at every turn....God I love this band.
i play my own acoustic bits over the long boring parts of Pigs
between the riffs and actual songs. Bloated Pope is the best thing
on here still!
It is a good album, but i agree with black santa in saying that it wont be one i will listen to daily, unlike stag or HAT, but i must admit when i heard pink bat i was impressed. although the sound isnt great, i enjoy the song! :)

Because your not listening to the song as a song. You can't hear through production, which sucks for you.
the production has to be done on purpose. i don't think they would put out anything less than what they were going for. sorta like goggles, when i first heard that i thought they fucked up on the drums, but it's ALL intentional with these guys.
personally i don't see what lustmord did that was so amazing, electronic genius? hardly. the bloated pope kills.
got it yesterday and can't get enough of the title track...overall it will have to grow on me, but I keep throwing it on. Reminds of a cross beween the latest Fantomas and Honky...some of it could have been on HAT too. Is it on vinyl?
i really don't understand you guys at all...this is a CD of real music! it isn't vacuum noise and beeps! there are three, nay, four very straightforward songs on here (pope, pinkbat, safetythird, toadi) which are blended together with quite interesting and lovely ambiance. plus, if you can enjoy the title track, it's got like 3 different songs in it! if you listen to 2, then 5, then 7, it's like you have a real melvins CD, except better because the songs are real dense thanks to the hand of Lustmord, and they are nice and long. you people that are saying it's a vacuum noise/colossus album really need to re-think what you are saying, because minute-for-minute there is a ton of rockable music on here.

oh, please. don't tell me how i listen. i've got thousands of albums, and i've recorded plenty of my own over the years.
a well-produced good song is better than a poorly-produced good song. that's a point that shouldn't have to be made. your logic fails because the melvins have themselves gone to the trouble of spending thousands of dollars to record their albums in pricy california studios in the past. if production quality had no bearing on the listening experience, everyone would record their records on 4-track cassette.
your argument is like saying that a copy of "the godfather" on DVD is the same as a copy on VHS that has been copied 15 times, which is ridiculous.
the recording quality does play into your listening experience, whether you know it or not. and all i'm saying is that i spend a lot of time recording, myself, and so it's even more so to me. a song like "pink bat" or especially "safety third" would be much more enjoyable if they had mixed them less retardedly. the songs are lost in the murk.
shit, the kick drum on "safety last" is so loud as to be distracting. put it on next to "the bloated pope" (a well-produced song) at a loud level and you'll see what i mean.

i agree that it is all on purpose, but that doesn't mean that it works. not everyone is "on" all the time, let's face it. i think that they were probably like "here, lustmord, mix this shit how you want," and he took charge. this is just a total guess, but i wouldn't doubt it. he *is* listed as "producer" in the liner notes...
the odd thing is that i really love the song "goggles" on stag. it's produced super-weirdly, but it works for that particular song, because the song is really weird itself. a more "rock" song like "pink bat" or "safety third" doesn't really work as well with f-ed up production, because you lose the impact and intensity of the music.
also, "stag" has no shortage of good, solid rock songs (unlike "pigs of the roman empire"), so when "goggles" comes along, it's a nice change. "stag" is probably my favorite melvins album. it depends on the day, though.
but, yeah, people that think lustmord is a genius? um.

the title track does not have three "songs" in it. it's got a bunch of lustmord shit, a riff, a funky drum beat, and an admittedly AWESOME riff that sadly goes nowhere. i would argue that riffs and beats by themselves are not "songs."
you said: "if you listen to 2, then 5, then 7, it's like you have a real melvins CD, except better because the songs are real dense thanks to the hand of Lustmord, and they are nice and long." i disagree with this, because all of the "real melvins CD's" that i have contain more than THREE MEASLY SONGS!
Hey Brian, what's your opinion of Pigs?
This album is good. I say its a mix between H.A.T. and Fantomas' Delirium Cordia without Patton's voice effects. It has ominous atmospheric textures throughout, even in the more straightforward songs. The Melvins cannot be all things to all people. To those who say the production isn't great, I don't hear what you are talking about. If you are refering to Dale's drums it might be because they were run through various filters. On a scale of 1-5, I give P.O.T.R.E. a 4.
A 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You need to hear some good music someday.
Haven't heard it yet, so I have a question for the people who don't like/hate the album - how does it compare to Honky ?
it doesn't!!!
It's good... but Honky is amazing, This new album is quite a distance from it.
One of the reasons I talk the truth, is cause I'm listening to shit that blows the new melvins away when I type this. So I have no regrets.
Don't listen to anyone "fooling themselves"..........
oh my god! why cant everyone just like what they like and leave each other alone???!!!
this thread is getting boring and childish.

I don't understand how some people think this is very different from Honky. To me, it's very similar. :?

Yeah, what does Brian think? :D
I don't care that some people like it... but when the majority of the people are just pertending it's amazing and fooling themselves, simply because it's the Melvins, I get quite mad. That is a fact that many people are doing this.
Now like I said, the CD is probably better on weed... but without it, it's just a good CD. I've only listened twice, first time was quite dissapointing. Second time I was drawing, got to song 6 without thinking about it... was not amazing me at all, then I was done drawing and got extremely bored listening but I had to finish the album... And I am one who enjoys finishing houdini and stoner witch with their last two tracks.
I'll listen one more time with headphones, see if that makes a difference.

i can say that i love an album or that i think it's a complete piece of shit, whatever, it doesn't matter. this is a discussion board, and i thought that we were supposed to do things like debate the validity of lustmord and things like that on here.
me, i think that this new album is lazy, boring, underwritten, and not even one of the melvins' top 20 albums. it has landed firmly towards the bottom of the ladder when it comes to how i rank melvins albums. and i really believe that when the newness of this album wears off, most of the people who are going on and on about how genius it is will realize that most everything the melvins have released is better than this album.
this is my opinion. it's a negative one. so what? it's just as valid as if i had written "DUDE this ablum is SOOOO mint when you smoke a fat joint and just sit bakc and reeellaaaaaxxxx" or something.

Yes Gonzo, I give it a 4. I like this album and here are the reasons: 1. I enjoy electronic music; in fact, I review electronic albums for a webzine called Vital Weekly and Lustmord happens to be an electronic musician that I am a fan of. 2. I like the Melvins. They are one of the most underrated bands that I can think of and I am probably one the few here that likes Collossus Of Destiny and can appreciate the good experimental noise found on there. Is this album one of their best in my opinion? No it's not. I gave it a 4 which is less than the usual 5 i give the majority of their albums. And yes my friend I do indeed listen to "good" music and am quite confident in my own critiques/opinions as far as music goes whether it's straight up Melvins sludge (which seems to be what most of you all want from them and I can't blame you there) or some trippy experimental jazz, rock, electronic, bluegrass, surf etc etc. If you don't like the album, trade it off for something or put it up on Ebay. I'll say it again: The Melvins cannot and should not be expected to be all things to all people.

Yes, when I heard it finally. Before I did hear it, I didn't know what role exactly Lustmord would play in the overall scheme of things, I mean really you never know what to expect from a Melvins album can you? I basically just stayed up to date with all the rumors about the album on this messageboard.

I wholeheartedly recommend early Skinny Puppy, Download, Doubting Thomas, Cevin Key. There are countless electronic musicians out there that are top shelf but these are my faves and you cannot go wrong with them. All of these groups have pretty much the same guys in them, a good website about these groups can be found at:

Dude, I rate a majority of their albums a 5. Here are the ones I don't: The Crybaby I rate a 1, Pigs Of The Roman Empire a 4, Prick and Colossus Of Destiny both a 3. Everything else by the Melvins I have listened to I rate a 5.
I know a thing or two about a thing or two and I dub these ratings fair my man.

Quote from: blacksantaHey Brian, what's your opinion of Pigs?
I think it's a great album, but I knew what to expect. Sorry to hear that some are disappointed. I've been a lustmord fan for a while, so I'm biased. I'm one of those guys that listens to merzbow, nurse with wound, masonna, etc. In my opinion lustmord has a great sense of establishing mood in music. Some people may not agree, and some may not like this album, and say colossus for example. Those people may just need to face the fact that the melvins just won't be able to be their favorite band and they're going to need to look into the albums melvins put out before the purchase is made. Rest assured if you don't like the output of one band, there's always another. If someone happens to be looking for straight-ahead rock i've got news for that someone, there's a plethora of it out there, many many groups are rehashing the same old shit or remaining stagnant or a combination of the two. some may argue: "i'd rather the melvins re-hash stoner witch than to have put out pigs of the roman empire", only thing any of us can say to that is, bummer for you.

speaking as a person who sees little to no appeal in much of what's referred to as "noise music" (and i use the term "music" loosely with much of this stuff), i have to ask what others, like you, see in it. i listen to nurse with wound, and i hear what sounds like washing machines running (although i have heard nurse with wound stuff that is musical and rhythmic -- it seems to depend on the album, and i admit i haven't heard a ton of his stuff). i listen to merzbow, and i hear static. i listen to lustmord, and i just hear a guy hitting a low note on a synth and just letting it hang for the length of an album, essentially. with a couple of clanks thrown in.
now, people try to argue that there's all this thought put into a lot of this stuff, but i sincerely think that this is just the listener's idea, and the recordings do not actually have all of this meaning and thought in them that some feel they do. i honestly think that a lot of "noise" is just made for people to take drugs to. which is fine. but, perhaps, since i don't do them myself, i don't get it for that reason. i could be wrong. but i just can't understand what real purpose an album like lustmord's "place where the black stars hang" serves. where's the evidence of inspiration, of hard work, of creativity, even?
i dunno, i'm starting to wonder if i just think that lustmord, specifically, is someone i dislike. i mean, listening to his stuff, it all just sounds like wind noises and bangs and crashes treated with tons of reverb. i don't know why anyone would sit around and listen to it, and i sure don't get how someone can call it anything other than it is, which is easily-created, unmusical background sound.
in addition, i actually LIKE "colossus of destiny," because i think i get it. it's a live album, the band's opening for themselves, and they pulled a noise set out of their asses to fill time. and, for what it is, it's cool. is it something i ever listen to? no. i think that virtually all of their albums are better than that one. but "pigs of the roman empire" just rubs me the wrong way, and i think it's because lustmord's contributions are completely uninteresting in the way that they don't add another angle to the melvins' music, but rather, his stuff sort of coexists with theirs on the album. it's less of a collaboration at times than some sort of split release. and the times that they are doing work together (i.e., the melvins playing a song, and lustmord doing stuff at the same time), it's just a jumbled mess. "pink bat" and "safety third" are decent songs that i think are trampled to death by lustmord's crap.
aw, hell. i really get into this too much, but i like talking about music. shit, even though i really dislike this album, i still went and bought it the day it came out because i love the melvins so much. so, gimme a break, eh?
and it's not that i, personally, want "stoner witch" over and over (and i've stated how much i loved "HAT" numerous times), but the thing that this album is missing is dale, buzz, and kevin playing their songs. a track like "toadi acceleratio" might've fit on "stag," but there, you've got tons and tons of the band playing. here, when a track like that is one of nine, and three or four others don't even have, say, a drum hit from dale crover on them, i start to wonder what the hell is going on. a boring, pointless instrumental that goes nowhere? that's not like the melvins. so i blame it on lustmord.
people keep saying that this album is really some step forward, or some metamorphosis, or that the melvins are always doing the unexpected, and whatever, but i've been buying their albums for ten years, and this is the first time i've ever felt like they've made an album that is actually a misstep. every time they've put out an album, i've been blown away. but that's because, no matter what, they're still making music, those three guys. this time, they've been compromised by a collaborator who is not worthy. and that's a first, i think.
i know i can't convince people to change their minds, and i would never try to, anyway, but i'm also aware that some people would defend them if they put out an album of fart noises, and they'd call it a great step forward for the band. it's hard knowing who is who.

Isn't that rather condescending? I've not touched any drugs whatsoever in the time I've been listening to 'Pigs...' and think it's a cool album. I also think that music such as Earth or Sunn, which many consider noise do have enjoyable relaxing properties and definite structure. Fair enough, I don't much care for Merzbow or others of that ilk of extreme noise, but not everyone digs just guitar-bass-drums playing in a standard rhythm. To claim noise is just druggies music is like implying all dance music is just for pill-popping E-freaks...

Wow I realy cant believe there are that many of you that dont like this album. I am a very big fan of the melvins. I consider them the best music group there is and ever will be. I have the luxary of listening to music for 10 hours daily on my headphones at work and I havent listened to anything but pigs for 3 days at work. I feel like I already got my 12 bucks worth of entertainment.
as far as i am concerned, and i think others may feel the same, i am rating this album in the realm of all music, not just the melvins catalogue. when i say it is a great album, i mean it is better (more creative, more interesting, more mood generated, enough changes in intensity to not be mundane) than a good number of other bands releases. that doesn't mean that it is better than other melvins albums...i definitely don't think it is one of their best at all, but their worst is still better than alot of the records you see while stalking up and down a music store's causeways.

i must retract my statement about lustmord in an earlier post. the man knows what he's doing. i've had the album 5 days and i've already got a semi-interesting story. got off work friday night and drank a fifth of jose cuervo. why? i was in the mood. well around 3 in the morning me and a buddy sat in my truck listening to pigs. the sound scapes that lustmord did made me throw up. i swear. they will make your head spin. listen to the song pigs very loudly and it just might happen to you.
on second thought that's not even semi-interesting
Quote from: Vcavalloas far as i am concerned, and i think others may feel the same, i am rating this album in the realm of all music, not just the melvins catalogue. when i say it is a great album, i mean it is better (more creative, more interesting, more mood generated, enough changes in intensity to not be mundane) than a good number of other bands releases. that doesn't mean that it is better than other melvins albums...i definitely don't think it is one of their best at all, but their worst is still better than alot of the records you see while stalking up and down a music store's causeways.
I rate the record from what's on there.
Comparing it to a Britney Spears album would just be plain stupid. 8)

indeed. saying that the album is better than 90% of the shit in a record store is probably not too hard, if you're taking into account the hoobastanks, ushers, and good charlottes of the world. but judging something by its relative value when compared to complete and utter SHIT is the easy way out.
i think the only way to rate this album is to compare it to the other albums that the melvins have done. does it hold up to the rest of their discography, or not?
i guess i have trouble figuring out why someone would defend this album while at the same time saying "i definitely don't think it is one of their best at all."
im listening to the intro to pink bat now...i think this is the ONLY album you can call TRULY speaker SHREDDING :) at least rock record
So tony buddy, got a question for you - what do you think of Honky ?
I am interested in this because you seem to feel very strongly about POTRE being worthless
noise for the most part, and Honky, to me at least, is an album that sharply distinguishes
between people who like straightahead sludge-melvins and those who prefer them
"experimenting". Helps me udnerstand where you fall in the spectrum.
I've asked this before and Metalhead Cow and Dr. Gonzo both love it but likes/hates POTRE. I
personally think Honky is one of the two best melvins albums (maggot being the other one).
what people has to understad is that their favourite albums are NOT the best ones for EVERYONE...
anyone who thinks that thats the way it should be, are a bunch of neo facists pricks...

i fucking LOVE honky.
i think it's like their pink floyd album or something.
there are moments that aren't so great (that one track with the drum machine that just speeds up is a little pointless), but that album is mostly pure, mad-scientist creativity. i love it. as a matter of fact, i think i'm going to go and put it on right now!
the true difference, i think, is that honky, while very weird, is still constructed of the melvins playing songs they have written. this new album is packed full of some other guy making boring sci-fi sound effects. therein lies the difference.
Quote from: klumpwhat people has to understad is that their favourite albums are NOT the best ones for EVERYONE...

what are you shitting out your fingers, now?
no one is trying to tell people what to listen to. me, i'm making a statement, an argument, and standing by it. it's called a debate. there's plenty of music that i personally don't like, but have no problem understanding why other people like it. i'm making an argument that lustmord and others of his ilk are not making art of any real worth.
so shut up.
hehe, you can make a statement but i cant ?
i wasnt talking about you in specific...but if you felt that it fit dont blame me :)

Hey, my name got mentioned. :toke: \:D/
Quote from: klumpim listening to the intro to pink bat now...i think this is the ONLY album you can call TRULY speaker SHREDDING :) at least rock record
Yeah, the intro is so cool. It gets LOUD, and your'e forced to turn the volume down. Then it just fades away, getting softer-So your turn the volume up, and it gets fucking loud again. And then you got a voice saying something about triple A batteries. Melvins love to fuck with people. :toke:
Pink Bat has REALLY grown on me. I really like Buzzo's vocal placement over the song (you guys know what I mean?). It has a cool solo at the end, and then a great outro.
Cool song. 8)
I still think safety third is better than pink bat :)
but pink bat isnt as shallow as it sounds the first time you listen...its got lots of different details you discover through repteated listening :)

Oh, don't get me wrong-I like Safety Third alot more than Pink Bat. Safety Third is just classic. I also fucking love Zzzz Best. It's like an intro for Safety Third, and when you listen to them together, it's really cool. III to The Bloated Pope is ausome too.
I like it. Very good album.
Bloated pope kick ass
Pink bat is pure rock
Title song at 12 minute is fucking dark and heavy and really cool .
8/10
I like this album better than Honky.
i guess fans of tomahawk & fantomas will be more likely to enjoy this album....
personally i kind of enjoy hearing songs that are fragmented and segued by unusual noises and ambient crap and not to mention spoken word and all... i guess i see the whole thing as a bit psychedelic.
something to stimulate other areas of your brain musically than what most people are used to.
marijuana.
i havent had a chance to purchase POTRE cd yet so i am just guessing what it might sound like

tony, it seems to me that the real issue here is when is something art and when is it not art. that, i believe is a question for the ages... it is not something that will ever be answered wholly, or even partially, and that is likely the most attractive thing about art. It is for the individual to define, which makes it all the more personal and beautiful. there would be no such thing as debate if art wasn't such as i explained because every question would already have an answer.
ok, Tony, i'm done, ::sigh:: let's have your retort. you've got to find something to get annoyed at there... ](*,) [-o<

actually, what you said there is perfectly valid. and, obviously, personal opinion does play into it, because the melvins thought that lustmord's stuff was worthwhile enough to spend the time collaborating with him, and i respect them as musicians and artists.
but i'm of the opinion that lustmord is one of those guys who shits in a bowl and calls it art and then uses the excuse that you just laid out to defend his actions. this loose definition allows everything from a da vinci to a turd in a bowl become "art" on an equal footing.
i think lustmord makes people think he is an artist because he says he is one.
i agree. if he says it is art, then it is only art for him, and that's the way it should stay. if someone else says it is art, then it is art for that person. unfortunately when a "musician" calls something art, it might sway someone else to believe it, which i believe is the problem here.
By the way, you edited your post back there. when i read it, it said nothing about you having time and respect for him. it says right under it that you edited it. unless you edited it before you noticed my reply (unlikely), then i have "nice try" to say to you...

originally, it just said "number one," but i realized that was a little dickish, so i added more (the "actually...") part. i did that before i saw your reply, so now i get what happened. my bad.
I really want to hear some of tony's recordings, seeing as he thinks Lustmord's work is easy to pull off. This isn't being childish, I'm just very curious. I've been doing recording since I was 15 and have done 4 years of recording courses on top of that, and I still don't see what was so easy about Lustmord's contribution. Please show us what real work is tony!

I'm not saying that at all, what I'm saying is that the music isn't only appreciated by drug users. I have plenty of friends who enjoy dance music who would run a mile at the sight of an E pill. I know it's prevailent in dance culture but, as you say, marijuana's prevailent in the rock scene too. You can't dismiss a certain type of music because it has a drug scene that engulfs some of it's followers. Music's about the sound, not the people who listen to it.
As it stands, Tony, judging from the rest of your posts about Pigs, I can tell you really, really hate it and I shan't try and convince you otherwise, but I'd say that if you can stand Prick, Collossus and Honky then this one wouldn't be too much of a curveball.
i just got it today...the title track rocks my lame ass...i like it alot.
Some of my favorite moments of Pigs of the Roman Empire
Toadi Acceleratio at 52 seconds to 1:02 some sweet evil sound on that guitar.
Horn sounds in the begining of Pigs WOW feels immense, hell epic even. 12:56 Pigs riff goes through a transformation of bass with staticy sounds to bass with hella beefy Buzzo guitar.(at least I think its Buzzo)
Buzzo's lyrical barrage in Pink Bat. Id say about 80% of the time I dont even try to understand what he is saying/singing/screaming I just feel it and it feels like a freaking rampage on Pink Bat.
I agree with Metalhead Cow Zzzz Best has got to be an intro to Safety Third. It almost seems wrong not listening to them together. In the last few days I have been hittin up these two songs alot. The bass in Zzzz Best fading in from one channel to the other and then out is realy cool. 2:20 in Saftey Third Buzz gets the song a swinging with his lyrics. Why do I feel like dancing?
Idolatrous Apostate.......
Track 9 4:38 Makes me think of the music you hear when your walking around the a mall during some holiday shopping but somehow its twisted. Twilight Zone or something.
I cant wait to hear some of this music live.
I love noise, but lustmord IS FUCKING BORING!!!

(no, i will not share it with anyone. my word is my word. even to tony.)
see, this is exactly what i knew you would do.
let me save you all the trouble of wondering what my PM said -- essentially, i told anaconda that i didn't appreciate him writing to me and accusing me of being full of shit, and that because he acted like such a dick, he could forget about me giving him access to music i've made, and that i realized that it doesn't fucking matter anyway. that, my friends, is why i became hostile towards him.
i don't feel like i need to justify my opinion. i am a musician (since when is that a "big story," by the way?), and i've made tons of albums (i've released five this year, with another two on the way), but there's no reason that i feel i need to prove this to anyone. take my word or don't. i don't care at all.
this all came about because i said i didn't like "pigs" and then mentioned at some point that i make my own music, and now a few people are on my ass, trying to get me to point them in the direction of music i've made. which would be retarded, because that would be me setting myself up.
my music could be great or it could be shitty. it doesn't matter. it has no bearing on my opinion. i don't require that other people send me their music or a list of their favorite bands, because it has nothing to do with anything.

okay, seriously, what's the deal with the pantera talk? are you trying to be funny by insinuating that i'm a big pantera fan? it's not funny, though, because i've already said that i like albums like prick and honky, which would seem to show that i'm not some total metalhead that doesn't understand experimental music. and which also makes your attempts at "humor" completely nonsensical and of no meaning.

actually, you totally got me, there. i don't know how i managed to say those two things.
to clarify: the truth is, i like prick AND i think it's a load of horseshit. i think it's a joke album, and for that, it serves its purpose. but it's also got a couple of great songs on it, like "larry," which i know i've mentioned. so, it's not my favorite melvins album, not even close, but i like it for what it is, which is a load of total horseshit. :)
honky isn't horseshit at all, so i should say that i like that album a ton. but it is one of their weirder albums, so it gets thrown in with prick and colossus from time to time by people.
but, yeah, this really is going nowhere. i don't like the album, others do. it doesn't matter if i've sold a million albums or two, my opinion is still my opinion and everyone else's is everyone else's. but, hey, if people write things to me and challenge me, i'm going to answer them.
i really should've just been like a lot of the others here and sucked the melvins' poles over this and just gone on about how genius the record is and what a "step forward" it is for them. ass kissing is okay, apparently, but if you dislike something they do, the problem is YOU and your record collection, i guess.
whatever. pantera forever!

no, this year has just been crazy. it's normally not like this. usually it's one album a year. i set the goal at the beginning of the year to make a ton of music.
and somebody has heard some of it. :)
ya, i've heard it!, tony just sent me his new single to upload on the ftp:

WOW!!!! i'm speechless.

by the way, what if i was actually gay?
hey, why don't you go after niggers, next, anaconda, you fucking idiot?
Are Homophobes REALLY Homosexual?
This is a question that has been pondered by many mental health professionals for years now, as they struggle to gain an understanding of the root cause of all the hate and intolerance projected towards gay and bisexual adults and children. The bottom line of all the research and commentary that has been done is; the more you say you are repulsed by homosexuals and homosexuality and the more you claim you hate homosexuals and homosexuality, the more that professional psychology seriously suspects that you really DO have (or had) inner homosexual thoughts and arousals and the more that you are really showing that what you are hating is really that certain part of yourself that you see in other people.
hahahahaha - anaconda - u are gay!!!

Btw, that clip is Neil Hamburger so go take up the issue of

i agree with gonzo. whatever happened to the melvins that actually had songs on every track of their cd? the ambient stuff gets old way too fast. Safety Third and Bloated Pope are the only songs on there worth listening too.
putting words in my mouth to an extent.
The rest of the album is worth listening to, and it is good. It is not amazing though. There lies the problem.
I've still only listened twice... I will attempt my third and most likely final listen tonight.
in my opinion, the album's spectacular.
and as a side note, there's really not that much "ambience" on the cd... not of the laid back variety anyway.
can't get that toadi acceleratio riff out of my head...
I was hesitant in getting this album because of some of the reviews I read. Plus the stores here didn't get it in until recently anyway. I've listened to it three times all the way though so far and I actually like it. I do prefer more of a rock album and I'm not that much of a fan of 'noise' records but this was very listenable to me. I felt the same way about "Delirium Cordia" from Fantomas. I like the mood of the album. It also seems to flow pretty well in my opinion.
i'm fairly new to the melvins, have a lot of their albums now. i love most of them, but i still haven't caught onto this one yet. it's been said before, but it's very hard to listen to all the noise-type stuff. i'm a much bigger fan of the heavy, grinding, guitar driven songs the melvins are masters at. maybe the album will grow on me in time? we shall see. i'm a very open minded person when it comes to music. i'll give everything a fair chance. even polka
I don't want to hear any more crybaby bullshit about the new CD. It is good as fuck, without a doubt. I think it as unbelievebly bold an album as you will hear. The Melvins don't have to put out "rock" albums and you should be thrilled about that. They can do whatever the fuck they want and that to me is absolutely thrilling. I like abstract shit - why would the melvins put out anything but an album like this? If there was only three seconds of "good" material on there those three seconds would kick my ass BADLY and that is great. Miles Davis didn't hit the nail on the head EVERY time, but when he did oh my god... To me it's the same way with the melvins really, you should just realize that they have the most integrity of anyone in music and either you like it or you don't. My point is I am more than satisfied with the latest effort, and maybe you should give it a better listen. Cheers, Tom

You've hit the nail on the head there! I am pretty impressed with Pigs overall. Although now I can't get the image of Jurassic Park that was discussed in the most recent interview out of my head when i'm listening to it.
Lots of tension building then you're hit with the riffs. Except the riffs are more like elephants than dinosaurs in my head. Boy that sounds crazy. Also I don't like Toadi Accelerablablabla very much. But hey.
However annoyed you are with the Jello thing you'll still love The Melvins, what is there to worry about? Just don't listen to it. I love the Simpsons but do I watch the first series or the newer ones with crappy guest stars and Marge getting breast implants? Certainly not :)

jesus...
you know, people can say they don't like something without being called "crybabies," you know. i think there are too many people out there like you who are just total fanboys that will accept anything your favorite band does because you are unwilling or unable to do otherwise. it's okay to not like lustmord or jello biafra, and it's okay to think the melvins' music isn't as good when they're collaborating with others.
i'm totally aware and "fine" with the fact that the melvins don't always put out "rock" albums. not liking "pigs" is not about the fact that you can't deal with the melvins not rocking, it's about the fact that you want them to do more. this album and this band is not as simple-minded as "either you like it or you don't." there's bits i like, and bits i don't. but the bits i don't like are way more than the bits i do like. and that's a rarity with melvins albums. 20 years' worth of music and only a few bum albums i can deal with. also, i've listened to the album personally at least 15 times, but i appreciate your condescending attitude and advice to "give it a better listen." maybe you should take your own advice and stop huffing the melvins' dongs and you'd realize that it's not that great.

Why does everyone keep saying this stuff about whooshes and clangs?!?! i don't hear the "vacuum" noises people talk about, or the trash can noises. i hear music with a couple of extended intros and outros that are sometimes their own track. this is not a noise album.

You're not helping your arguments by falling prey to using the same methods that you're critizing.

i wouldn't call it a "noise" album, either. but it is noisy. and the musical stuff is just sub-par.
i don't know, "zzz best," yeah, that's just an intro to "safety third," but it doesn't really have anything to it. dale hits the kick a bunch. "toadi" is completely pointless and goes nowhere, and "pink bat" and "safety third" are merely okay melvins songs. honestly, does anyone think that those two songs are anything special, really? i can think of 50 melvins songs i like better. and i hate the way they're produced or mixed.
but "III," "idolatrous," the bonus track, and the first half of "pigs" -- what is that stuff but a bunch of wind noises, bangs, and things of that nature? there's nothing musical, really, about that stuff. it's sound, yes. it has a pitch center (on occasion). but i don't know if it counts as music. sound effects, sure.

how exactly do you think i'm falling prey to using the same methods as i'm criticizing? i don't like the album, and i can discuss it without being an idiot (unlike some others on here) and just posting two sarcastic, snarky sentences. you may disagree with me, but people should be able to say that they hate something without having people take it personally. i don't care if you love or hate the album, it doesn't affect me. but when people say things like "it's brilliant" or whatever, i'll debate that. no one on this board has said WHY they think it's so great. and the worst thing is when people say things like "the melvins are always changing, and if you can't accept that, then blah blah blah..." i hate that. these are the people that will defend everything the band does. jesus, get a personality. you'd have to be a fool to think that everything a band does is perfect at all times. and that goes for ANY band. and i've been a melvins geek for ten solid years, so i think i know to expect the unexpected.
there is no "higher ground" with opinion. it is what it is. some people don't know how to debate without getting overly defensive, however.
you make alot of good points,
but all i was intending to point out was that you said that "people can say they don't like something without being called "crybabies," you know",
then proceeded to tell someone to stop huffing the melvins dongs and realize that the album is not good.
and the "higher ground" i mentioned was in reference to the way people discuss their opinions, and obviously not the opinions themselves.

i'm not sure what these two things have to do with each other.
i can say "the album sucks," i can say "the album rules." either way, i don't deserve to be called a "crybaby" for disliking it. people are so unable to deal with a negative opinion, sheesh. there's a difference between expressing a negative reaction and whining. "whining" would be "waahhhhhh, the album sucks, my life is ruined, boo hooooo," and no one's said that. having an opinion and arguing it is not "whining."
i can also say that there are people that will hold anything their favorite bands do up as "great," and they'll say that anyone who disagrees is lacking in some way. or they'll call you a pantera fan.
Quoteand the "higher ground" i mentioned was in reference to the way people discuss their opinions, and obviously not the opinions themselves.
i thought i was on the higher ground, myself. i know that i've never done anything but talk about the album. i was attacked numerous times, and i responded to that, but i'm not some dude on here writing "MAAN PIGS IS THE BEST EVER AND YOUR DUMB IF YOU DONT THINKSO" or something.
I'm still lovin' the fuck out of this disc. Those "whooshes and clangs" and "vacuum noises" create a great cinematic atmosphere in my living room or car that I'm lovin'. The three "rock" tracks kick my ass. Yeah, the MELVINS have done better, but that's a damn high standard. The production and the noises on those tracks sound great to me, and add a feel to the music that I dig. I still can't understand why this one's such a curveball for some folks. It sounds just like the MELVINS to me.
I can't wait for Never Breath What You Can't See as well. I've got a ton of shit to look foreward to in the next few weeks (Tom Waits, Hot Snakes, Hidden Hand, The Cramps, The Dwarves, Mos Def) but this ones gonna be right up there.
I must say,I respect your opinions about the new album but I don't agree with you.I think it's a tolerable album and King Buzzo is still on top of his game as far as good guitar riffs and vocal parts is concern.King Buzzo is a gifted man!!To be frank,I think this is a good "transition album."
Come on!!Think about some of the 70's bands that were around back in the days(not like I can remember). They had their "so-so"albums they put out from time to time you know...But nobody"I bet"could agree on how good they were when they came out...It's relative...It's perception.
i didnt read all of the posts in this thread but im sure its full of negative comments on the new album, so i thought id at least show my appreciation for it. I think its really good, and i dont think it is something thats too unexpected from the Melvins really. Its in a similar vein as 'Honky'(which i absolutely LOVE, one of my fav Melvins albums), its sorta atmospheric, which means you might have to approach it somewhat differently than the way you would when listening to a more conventional sounding rock album, or even a more conventional-sounding Melvins record. For the most part, you're not supposed to be looking for hit singles here. But even if you dont like the atmospheric stuff, how can you NOT at least enjoy a song like 'Pink Bat'...which absolutely fuckin' rocks!! Its sorta Motorhead-ish, but still obviously the Melvins. Its one of the more Melvins-type conventional songs on the album as well as is 'Safety Third' and 'the Bloated Pope', so its not like the Melvins didnt throw you a bone in there somewhere. 'Pink Bat' sorta reminds me of the Stoner Witch era and that song 'Instant Larry' for some reason. Overall, i would say its one of those albums where you have to be in the right mood before putting it in for a listen(no, not necessarily stoned). If you're not into weird atmospheric stuff, then you probably wont like this album on a whole, but i for one like how the Melvins seem to dabble in almost every musical genre there is. That to me seems to have been the key to them surviving all these years. There are times when im sick and tired of more conventional approaches to music, and albums like POTRE and Honky are the perfect remedy. Songs like "Air Breather..." on Honky are alone worth the price of the album altogether. Whatever, to each his own.
Right.
I got this yesterday, and have heard it twice.
I think it's far and away the finest LP they've put out since Honky. All this talk of 'only three good songs' seems a bunch of bullshit now that I've heard the damn thing. Bloated Pope is the track I'm least fond of, but Pigs of the Roman Empire damn near ALL ROCKS to my ears.
The title track has made a dream come true - anyone lucky enough to go to one of the Cameron Jamie shows in the UK last October will be overjoyed to finally have the soundtrack to 'Kranky Klaus' in their stereo.
I didn't expect it to blow me away at all. But it has.
Anyway...
Tony, I totally respect your stance on this LP. It doesn't do a great deal for you and you resent someone as talantless as Lustmord all over it, drowning out Dale and whatever else. But if you think I love this LP because I'm some kind of irrational fanboy you're very much mistaken. (FYI personally I have little time for their other Ipecac LPs, and find Stoner Witch and Bullhead, bonafide classics to the avarage fan, tedious and dull - not popular sentiments but I don't assume those that love these LPs are fanboys. That's just plain unneccessary and disrespectful.)
I love the new album too, but I'm not hateful or nothing towards Tony. He's just saying his opinion that's all.

dude! you think stoner witch and bullhead are tedious and dull, and you have little time for the ipecac LP's, but you think pigs of the roman empire "rocks"? i think your definition of "rocks" is probably quite different from mine. does a track like "idolatrous apostate" "rock" to you?
i give up. i can't even begin to figure this one out. :-k
why are you posting on this board? i'm honestly wondering -- it seems like you barely like the melvins' usual fare.
Quotei think your definition of "rocks" is probably quite different from mine. does a track like "idolatrous apostate" "rock" to you?
i give up. i can't even begin to figure this one out.
I don't think its about definitions of 'rocking' as it is about pure and simple personal taste. All I know is that Pigs is the kind of LP I've been waiting for the melvins to make - recent ones simply haven't held up to repeated listens (i.e. I got bored quickly).
Idolatrous Apostate doesn't 'rock' in the traditional sense but (IMO) it fits nicely. I feel the whole LP is well composed and structured, and the final track adds to this sense.
I don't think I'm a Melvins superfan at all. In fact, I'm hardly a 'rock' fan - certainly as a loose genre 'rock' gets by far the smallest piece of my music money. Melvins are one of the only 'guitar' bands I'm truly fond of because they've made some timeless records (Gluey, Lysol, Stag, Honky). I was just trying to (cackhandedly) illustrate to you that it's possible to totally LOVE Pigs without being some kind of Melvins lapdog.
And I post here because although some Melvins LPs grate on me I adore some of the others. And I like the vibe and folks of this place - including yourself when you showed up.
Anyway, good day to you and everyone.
thank you ironside. the feeling is mutual. :o
Bullhead and Stoner Witch hardly count as 'usual fare' anymore though, do they? I mean, Stoner's like 10 years old at this point...

i think anyone would say that when a song "rocks" it means that it's going full-bore and it's a rock and roll song. that word is inappropriate, i think, when describing lustmord's stuff or ambient stuff in general. you can like it and think it's good and think it rules, but saying it "rocks" doesn't really make sense. grachan's already explained himself, though, so no need to bring it up again, right? 8)

look at all the songs from the 50's that talked about rock (defined it, really) and what it was. it was about going crazy, getting wild, whatever. the term "rocks" means something rocks and rolls, which means it is wild and crazy and full of real energy.

Who says that only teenage girls use the word "rocks" in the way you suggested? Is that some sort of power play intended to circumvent us with the values you place on "manhood"? Shall I categorize that bullshit with your requirements to post on this board as a "melvins fan"?
I'll admit I was being pretentious, so for Idiotboy, there's some birthday cake waiting in my fridge. But I was being pretentious in defiance of Toni's malevolence in stating his opinion. To tell anyone that they "don't understand why they would even post" here on this message board simply because they use a VERY pliable word (rocks) in a way that he considers weak or useless is pure belligerence. It's abusive, and an attack on one's fanship. And Toni did so to support his own limited point. So, in essence, I was saying "FUCK YOU" for that belligerence.
I'll add to that a "DOUBLE FUCK YOU" for having neurons that don't recognize the fact that the meaning of words in any language, including english, is not static. Word meaning changes with social current and ideology. Medical, legal, Internet and Hip hop culture alone change the language everyday, adding new words and changing the meanings of existing words. Even your unabridged 52 volume Oxford English Dictionary that you paid big bucks for is limited as soon as you put it on your bookshelf, so think about that next time you feel like the paragon of all melvins fans as you listen to one of the "albums that rock". Hell, think about that next time you're wondering about Buzz' "lyrics".

You think all the values and definitions of the '50s are still in effect? Did it ever occur to you that some people experience the same energy and euphoria with very subtle things, such as songs like They All Must Be Slaughtered? (hence the appropriation of the word "rocks" with a new meaning and within a new context) Or does all that bullshit and "ambient" music just equate to some form of ballad to you? What's the matter, Toni? Is "ballad" not masculine enough for you? Is your real problem with The Melvins' more inaccessable and softer material really a reflection of your personal gender issues? Do you need Elvis and his gyrating package to prove to me that I don't know what rocks? I'm sorry, but I don't buy it. Word meaning is up for grabs, just like the experiences of Melvins fans that come to that same music with varied, individual sets of signifiers hardwired to their minds.
And your version of "fanship" does not define that of others. I can't stand moronic, masterbatory abuse, especially from people who are obviously intelligent. So count on more pretense and bullshit everytime you feel like sticking your dick in someone's face and calling it your opinion.

The universe, and how it is experienced, is up for grabs. Just because Tony is conforming to a specific program that opiates his ideology does not mean that I have to accept his definition of the universe. Especially if that universe relies upon a beligerent dogma that I don't accept.
Quote from: idiotboyPretense - Some are such ultra-individualists that they like to think they can 'own' thier own private meanings for words...
Within my own experience of the same universe you inhabit? Yeah, that's right. But if that's your definition of pretense, then you're just as pretentious as I am. You don't own the authority on the meaning of words. You can't even tell me where to find it. Which ultimately means that you're faking a percentage of what you say, write, and do. Just like everyone else.
QuoteThe universe, and how it is experienced, is up for grabs. Just because Tony is conforming to a specific program that opiates his ideology does not mean that I have to accept his definition of the universe. Especially if that universe relies upon a beligerent dogma that I don't accept.
my god, you so fucking farted on that one.
hey, buddy -- words mean what they mean for a reason. you can't just suddenly start defining words in your own way and then defending that behavior with quasi-philosophical bullshit about universes and dogmas and conformity. you're using the word "rocks" wrong. that's all. that's it. you can't bullshit your way out of it.
by your logic, any word could mean anything to any person, and that would cause the breakdown of every system of communication known to man. this is not a good idea. words mean what they mean for a reason. stop being an asshole.
quiet little tunes don't "rock" any more than rap songs "jazz." end of discussion.
what is "is"?
Quote from: tony
hey, buddy --
Is that some kind of tough guy talk? To call me "buddy"? Cuz we're not buddies, y'know. We never will be. Yet you're using that word, "buddy" in a way it was never meant to be used when it was created. You're using it to show me that you're tough... to show me that you're a man. Are you making up that meaning...? With your usage of that word, "buddy"? Is there a hint of threat in that usage? Cause I think anyone reading can tell that we're not going to go out for beers and shoot the shit about monday night football.
Quote from: tonyyou're using the word "rocks" wrong. that's all. that's it. you can't bullshit your way out of it.
I think Dudbean just proved your ass wrong. Does that count as a fart?
Quote from: tonywords mean what they mean for a reason.
What reason is that? Really, give me something of substance, buddy. Dash my theoretical house of cards into nothing with something REAL. I'm all ears.
Quote from: tonyby your logic, any word could mean anything to any person, and that would cause the breakdown of every system of communication known to man. this is not a good idea. words mean what they mean for a reason. stop being an asshole.
Why would anyone be an asshole to you, toni? Your own usage of words, tropes, and symbols relies on multiple meanings. You just displayed how "buddy" can mean something that is the OPPOSITE of its definition on the dictionary. Is society unraveling as a result? Maybe.
Quote from: tonyquiet little tunes don't "rock" any more than rap songs "jazz." end of discussion.
Some rap songs are "jazzy". Ever listened to some of the production work done by Mad Lib? But that's beside the point. The fact is that once someone on the cutting edge decides to alter a word's usage, it filters into the mainstream. Fo shizle, my nizzle. Even the word "nigger" has been re-appropriated by black culture to change it's meaning. "Queer" is now used as an accepted signifier of homosexuality in the media, not just as a derrogatory term. "Queer", as a word, originally had nothing to do with homosexuality. But times change, toni, don't they? And with them change the meanings of words. You can't stop it.
If you're stuck in the '50s, then I guess you're head's in the sand, and you're experiencing the universe in a way that I'm not experiencing it, and in a way I'm not interested in. Which, consequently, is going to color my appreciation of your opinion on the Melvins and their new album.
buddy,
your arguments are so ridiculous as to be almost completely nonsensical. you're grasping at straws just to justify your actions. yes, the meanings of words sometimes change. but this happens when a lot of people at once decide on it, not just one lone douche such as yourself.
for instance, the word "douche." used to refer to just the feminine hygiene device. now it also refers to a person who is being a stupid idiot.
i don't really feel like going any further with this. if you want to take that to mean that you "won," go ahead.
i'm going to go eat some ball bearings. oh, that's my term for "ice cream," by the way.

I gotta say this line is rather amusing.
EDIT: I'm pissed off, so I'll remove my ranting for civility's sake...
ugh who the hell recorded this? it sounds like it was done with ONE 10 dollar microphone into "my first sound recorder" program. the switch to digital recording hurts my ears.
oh yeah the songs are horrible compared to H.A.T. seriously disapointed :(
Quote from: tonybuddy,
You did it again, but now it doesn't carry nearly enough irony. Why is that, toni? What happened to all your authority?
Quote from: tonyyour arguments are so ridiculous as to be almost completely nonsensical.
It's called "literary theory". Take a class. Get those nurons firing on something other than your ego for once.
Quote from: tonyyes, the meanings of words sometimes change. but this happens when a lot of people at once decide on it, not just one lone douche such as yourself.
A lot of people have "decided" (Wha...? Was there some sort of concensus when the new dictionaries were written? No one told me.) that "rocks" can be used to say that something is cool, or that it rules. Both of those words, as you may have noticed, also carry multiple meanings. Your usage of "fart" a few posts back, however, is completely nonsensical. Did a lot of people decide on that, too? Or was it just you? Who's the douche???
Quote from: tonyi don't really feel like going any further with this. if you want to take that to mean that you "won," go ahead.
I don't NEED to win, buddy. You proved yourself to be a jerk before I even read this thread, which automatically makes you a loser. I just wanted to offer you and your myopic ideology something that you've obviously never seen before. Happy Birthday. Maybe some day you'll stop being a jerk.
But don't misunderstand me, Tony. Though language is limited in expressing many things, I still feel that it's a valuable, essential tool. But it also alienates, colonizes, violates and terrorizes. That's why art is so valuable to culture: it expresses concepts that language can only point towards. The Melvins, and their art, certainly provide that phenomena for us. Hence this message board. It'd be nice if someone could say that POTRE rocks around here and not have shit thrown in their face for it, just because someone wants to fucking WIN.
seriously, though, buddy, i don't feel like arguing with you about this any more. it's clear that nothing i say will change your mind, so it would be an utter waste of my time to even bother after this. it'd be like arguing with george w. bush or something. if i wanted to battle a stubborn mule, i'd go to a zoo.
i will say, though, for someone who is such a proponent of "literary theory," you sure spell ("neuron" and "consensus") like a person currently in the middle of fifth grade. you can't even get the spelling of my name right, for chrissakes, and all you'd have to do is look at the posts you're responding to to get it. although i suspect you're trying to feminize my name by adding the "i" at the end, and everybody knows how very mature it is to try and challenge one's masculinity in an argument. countdown to the use of the word "fag": one post.
p.s. - i've been in college for a few years, so spare me your condescending "take a class" shit. actually, spare me all your condescending shit.
p.p.s. - i wonder if "loser" and "jerk" are good words to describe a person who can't admit that perhaps they're using a word in a confusing way and tries to cover their ass by giving people impromptu language and art history lessons. nah, i guess "asshole" works just fine. i'll stick to that.

i just got this CD and enjoy it very much, its moody, down temp for the most part and when it does get heavy which isnt often, its vintage melvins. nothing not to like here, and its great to drive to.

driving you nuts is much more fun than actually (and easily) proving that what i say is true. i'd rather watch you freak out than validate my claims for you. it's wayyyy more entertaining. that i am sure of.
truth is, i could be a harvard scholar with 500 platinum albums or a junior-high dropout without even a 7-inch single to my name, and it wouldn't matter, because you'd still be a pud.
Now, I normally just lurk, but...um..."moorst," from the way you are writing, you sound like a first year college student flaunting all of your brand new knowledge in order to attempt to prove the extent of your intellect.. That may or may not be the case, but either way, it's the image you are projecting. Throwing out pseudophilosophical jargon makes your argument come off as trite and childish.
And please, don't take literacy theory as the be-all, end-all of language discussions - literary theorists wouldn't even agree to that. If you want to try another approach, get into rigorous discussions of linguistic meaning by reading Russell or Wittgenstein. And don't even throw the "take a class" thing at me. I have. Many of them.
And for the record, I think Pigs is a pretty nifty album.

Outside of possible community classes and seminars, literary theory classes usually can't be taken until your junior year. Because you need the pre-requisites. I've been to two universities, and that was the case for both. So if that's the way I "sound", I apologize. Much of what I have written on this thread has been written in haste.
But what you're saying appears to be this: it's fine to be a belligerent asshole in expressing your opinion on the Melvins, but as soon as you use words, code and theory that are a little unfamiliar... words that only a PhD or an acclaimed theorist should use... then that's a party foul. Shame on you for offering something different. Your opinion is automatically useless. Am I reading you right? Is that what it takes to get you to actually interact on this thing? All the abuse and idiocy is just fine, but when someone comes along and uses words and terminology that you deem useless, automatically I'm some kind of elitist?
Quote from: captainhappyAnd please, don't take literacy theory as the be-all, end-all of language discussions - literary theorists wouldn't even agree to that.
Agreed. Linguistics is the cutting edge, and there is still an entire universe to be explored on that front. RIP Jacques Derrida. But it was never my point to suggest that literary theory was any such thing. You've been lurking, so I can only assume you've read the whole thread. Please read my bullshit (hint hint) in its context. Don't just enter the fray just to match ego's with me or Tony. It looks like you're joining in just to enter the pissing match.
Quote from: captainhappyAnd don't even throw the "take a class" thing at me. I have. Many of them.
You obviously think I'm just a mean blowhard. That's fine, I guess, but where was your lancelot routine when Tony was telling Pachan that he shouldn't even post here because of what he considered a lesser form of fandom? Am I the only one here that considers that mean and dumb and abusive? To me that just seems like all anyone cares about around here is being right at the expense of others. Sounds like a fucking inquisition.
Quote from: captainhappyAnd for the record, I think Pigs is a pretty nifty album.
Agreed. I even think it rocks.

Partially, but not quite. People can say whatever they want in regard to the Melvins, because that is just emoting. In the end, it's inconsequential. When you start coming off like a pretentious intellectual, taking your side as fact and dismissing counterarguments because the opposition hasn't taken classes, you're giving a bad name to all academics.
Quote from: moorstAll the abuse and idiocy is just fine, but when someone comes along and uses words and terminology that you deem useless, automatically I'm some kind of elitist?
Yes, you do seem like an elitist, because you are using esoteric terms and essentially waving them over others' heads. I do not think that the terminology is useless, but if you're going to use it, try to not be so presumptuous. Don't assume everyone knows what you're talking about and dismiss them when they don't, and don't take your sides as fact.
Quote from: moorstDon't just enter the fray just to match ego's with me or Tony. It looks like you're joining in just to enter the pissing match.
I can see why you're saying that, but no, that's not what I'm doing. I identify with academia a lot more than I do with the Melvins, so when I saw someone representing it in an irresponsible manner (especially the humanities, which already come under more than enough fire) I felt like stepping in. Call it a slight.
Quote from: moorstThat's fine, I guess, but where was your lancelot routine when Tony was telling Pachan that he shouldn't even post here because of what he considered a lesser form of fandom?
See above.
Now, if I came off a bit harsh initially, my apologies. Perhaps it was a knee-jerk reaction since it hit a nerve. You seem like a bright fellow, so unless it's to further feel each other out philosophically and discuss something interesting, let's not keep this going.

Captainhappy, I understand and agree with you. I was being pretentious. I don't know if I can agree with you that such abuse (tony's emoting) is inconsequential, though. What if Sachan decided not to post here anymore after Tony's attack on his sense of fanship? I doubt that would happen, but we don't really know each other. If he did leave, should we just conclude that he's just a pussy, and move on? Should we bow to Tony's sense of fanship in this manner?
Ultimately, I'm just blowing smoke in Tony's face. I'm not trying to give acedemia a bad name, so I apologize if that's how I came across. The "take a class" comment was in response to his suggesting that my whole argument was nonsensical, when it infact comes from scholars.
I think his reaction has been entertaining. But I seriously think his abuse gives Melvins fans a bad name.

Great release. I know i'm behind on this but I planned on getting Pigs at the San Fran show.
The first time through this release I couldn't help thinking of King Crimson, like side two of Larks' Tonguues in Aspic, The Talking Drum sort of vibe following Easy Money.
I'm greatful for all the material the Mevins put out the last cople of years, and I mean Buzz, Dale, and Kevin's other projects as well. What an incredible body of work.
I'm curious if anyone here has heard of Lustmord before?

After seeing the Melvins performing Pigs of the Roman Empire live the cd gets a whole other dimension!!! This album is growing and growing every time when I give it a spin. It needs to be played at maximum volume. Nice job by Lustmord. The big bangs programmed are amazing to say at least. Like a plane going to the soundbarrier.
I like that cd. I think it sounds cool. It's like the noise got a much needed dose of production. An interesting collaboration to say the least
I really like Pigs. it's a good mix of some nifty textures and some good ol rock and roll. I feel like it could have been about 10 minutes shorter, but that's not a big deal.
What it's really good for is grocery shopping. Put it on the headphones and then look for some good produce.

Hmmmm...
I have been checking on Lustmord's site recently. Seems he has done collaborations with other disparate creatives as well...
ARTIST: HECATE VS. LUSTMORD
TITLE: Law of the Battle of Conquest
LABEL: HYMEN / ANT-ZEN
DESCRIPTION: Only on rare occasions do such opposites converge to create an enduring state of struggle. Of course Hymen does not postulate that Hecate vs. Lustmord's confrontational sonic assault "Law of the Battle of Conquest" is so pure a pairing of opposites - but it's damned close. Where the struggle of chaos vs. controlled atmospheres, of hellish breakbeats vs. dark drones takes the form of four riveting tracks. Rachael Kozak pushes the aggressive, the combative, the raw power of percussive sound in her recordings as Hecate, stressing the dominance of breakbeat as well as contemporary noise fury. Brian Williams, on the other hand, has a history running into the 80s of voicing subtler emotions like isolation, angst, and dysphoria as ambience, working as a sound designer for Graeme Revell as well as releasing genre-defining dark ambient albums under the Lustmord name. It's from four Lustmord albums in particular that the tracks on "Law of the Battle of Conquest" arise. In fact, the ferocity of Hecate's rhythmic prowess conjures a new whole by alchemizing an entire Lustmord album in each track. Lustmord's "This Monstrous Soul' from 1992 spawns Hecate's 'Monstrosity,' shredding the brooding minimal overtones of the original with horrific walls of rolling bass and apocalyptic breaks to accentuate a frantic tempo. A similarly toned 'Strong Attractron' (from 1996's "Strange Attractor/Black Star" 12-inch) together with 'Monstrosity' bookends 'Megavoid' and 'Heresy Resurrected' - where aphex-aceed drum patterns over 2001's Metavoid impart martial visions of the future, while Hecate invokes hades' noise from 1990's heresy through human and werewolf screams from graeme revell. 'I tried to make a track represent the original feeling of what Brian had in mind,' says Kozak. 'I think she reinterpreted it in a very unique way, and I admire what she did with it,' replies Brian, noting that because they initiated their friendship on that fateful morning in september 2001, the project took on a personal significance for both of them. 'She decoded the old and infused new sounds and a new spirit, blending both into something that is true to the original while pushing it into new areas. She made the old fresh and relevant in a new/different world.' 'Over the years there have been opportunities to have my material remixed, but I couldn't really see the point,' continues Brian. 'But Rachael is fresh and full of energy, and I feel a real empathy for where she's coming from sonically, so I knew the results would be interesting...'

I'm telling y'all, Pigs Of The Roman Empire is rapidly climbing up my ladder of favourite Melvins songs. It's soo damn good. Keep listenin to it.
COD is awesome.
The more I listen to this the more I like it.
Last night, my band played a show at the Double Door in CHicago. On my way home, I listened to PIGS, which was perfect, as it allowed me to follow my thoughts during the spooky ambient parts, and rock out every once in a while. I love this record.
After many months I can finally say the album has grown on me (if you care)....
I gave Pigs of the Roman Empire a couple of spins today at work and decided to resurrect this dusty topic to post my most recent thoughts about it.
It's been well over a year since this album has been released. I remember the excitement that a new Melvins release was generating here from a lot of us regulars. When it finally came out and we were eagerly listening to it, the initial responses were mixed, you had people who liked it, people who did not like it and blamed Lustmord, and people who were "meh" about it. Today while listening to it in headphones, I found myself coming to the realization that Pigs of the Roman Empire is arguably the Melvins most daring and cohesive release to date. It's an album that forges all of the elements that made the Melvins our favorite group with all of the experimental excursions they have been flirting with recently, that you find on albums like Prick, COD, Electroretard and Honky. The album flows brilliantly and each song belongs in such a way that you have to hear it in its entirety to fully appreciate this. I think this album is fantastic.
Pink Bat/ZZZZ Best is the Melvins' most furious track since The Maggot was newly released. Safety Third is a headtrip.
Toadi Acceleratio is unlike anything the Melvins ever attempted and the result is a success. The song Pigs of the Roman Empire, is a plain epic right up there with their other long and crawling masterpieces from their other albums. Bloated Pope rocks and it translates well live. III is an appropriate intro to this monumental release and Idolatrous Apostate is a weird and slow rumble in a subterranean environment. If you haven't listen to this album in a while, you ought to. Maybe those here who wasn't all that impressed with it should give it a second chance. I think this album can and will grow on you.

i just finished my first listen.
right now, i feel quite disappointed, i'm sorry to say. it's kinda the album that i feared it would be -- full of seemingly random bumps, bangs, and clanks, with lots of whooshing sounds. and lots of reverb. the songs are extremely fucked-up, as if they were recorded normally and then chopped up and remixed. there's definitely good bits, but there's not any song, save for "the bloated pope," that feels like something resembling "classic" melvins. it just feels sloppy and unfocused, like they just took a bunch of riffs and noises and threw them in a blender.
track by track:
Im sorry, and excuse me for this but, your a fucking moron.
one of the best melvins albums.IMO. its up there with HAT.
you know, you really don't know who's doing what on this album...
buzz says alot of the stuff that you think is melvins is actually lustmord and vice versa.
unless he just said that so fans might give it a chance, but i doubt that.

The more I listen to this the more I like it.
It gets better and better fo sho. The first half of it kicks the arse of the second half though. And Toadi Acceleratio is still average. I'm going to put it on now while I make me tea.
this whole album kicks ass. definitelty the prime expample of subtle melodies in an album. i think it takes a trained ear for this one. pigs of the roman empire is pure brilliance. definitely one of my favorite Melvins releases.
Pink Bat. i don't think this song gets enough credit. for some reason it reminds me if the Melvins and Motorhead wrote a song together.
totally, i've said that to myself as well.
I got it on vinyl... I got it a while ago when they toured with jello, i had the chance to get buzz to sign it but i didnt have the balls to go up and talk to him. Hes quite intimidating.

i think thats what set me off actually... was his gigantic head of hair. and knowing that hes done alot of shit in terms of music. Important shit!
Buzz is a nice man. Yeah that's exactly what I thought the first time I met him at a FANTOMAS instore here in Sydney..but he was really appreciative and easygoing when i was talking to him about different melvins stuff..future australian tours, honky etc
Believe it or not i still havent got this fuckin album yet. ive only heard one song which was sent to me as mp3..its a good album
Does anyone get the idea that Kevin played the piano part after the "ninth" song?

The very fact that this thread was resurrected is convincing evidence that Pigs of the Roman Empire is a great, if not misunderstood album and still generates discussion after being out for two years +.
Consider how difficult it is for the Melvins to throw out such a left field album. Pigs is it, it is their most controversial album among us fans.

I thought that was a great album too, it mixed ambient and noise stuff with strongs songs.
I listened to that record over and over when it came out.
one of the top 3 Melvins albums ever released (so far)...........
no question
I still listen to it quite frequently. I think perhaps it got a bit sidelined when the Jello albums and tours happened.
listening to pigs with the lights out right now. I love this album even though I haven't been spinning it lately. It's my first time in a a couple of months.
I still don't know the tracklist on this one. I know some (bloated pope, pigs) but not all. This is the type of album I put on and get lost in. The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.
I only like three or four songs off it.
this record makes me dinner and eats it with me too.
this album is in heavy rotation for me, once again.
(I know this has been stated here before but...)
jever notice that buzz drops a vulgarity in Pink Bat? something about "talkin shit".

"That's it... that's it, fuckers." from Hostile Ambient Takeover, which predates Starve Already a bit. Although it's technically Dale, they're pretty much the same person, right? The earliest recording of Buzzo swearing songfully is probably one of the bootlegs from when Buzzo yelled "BITCH!" in Oven for some reason.
Charmicarmcarmicat.
I love this album. One of the best of the kevin era.

I'm kind of new to this forum and not sure if this has been discussed before, but does anyone know, or has anyone speculated about which guitar parts are played by Adam Jones on this album? I'm guessing the long guitar solo at the end of "Pink Pat" is Jones, the tone is very Toolish, kind of like the solos in "10,000 days". Possibly the solos on "Bloated Pope"?, but those are most likely Buzzo.
I think this album is pretty amazing. I hadn't listened to it in a long time, but I've been playing it lately and am really blown away. Atmospheric and heavy at the same time.
Just for sh*ts and giggles, this is the track order I've been running:
1. pink bat
2. zzzz best
3. safety third
4. III
5. the bloated pope
6. toadi acceleratio
7. pigs of the roman empire
8. idolatrous apostate

Doesn't he swear on track 2 of his solo cd? He also says shit on that song on Stag, the mellow one, is it Black Bock? Sounds about right.
Long, viscous, tractile album with aggressive flashes. I love it.
This CD and HAT are kevin's legacy
Why POTRE and HAT, and not, let's say, The Maggot?
Please, don't forget The Bootlicker. What would The Bootlicker be without the bass.
I just think he was more out there on HAT and Pigs.

I agree COMPLETELY. One of my favorite basslines ever is Jew Boy Flower Head. It will blow your head off in a car with a good system and big subs.
His bassline in Missing (originally a Cows song, covered for Electroretard) is also pretty damn epic.
OK - we all know that adam jones (tool) is listed as a member of melvins in the booklet to POTRE, but he obviously doesn't play guitar side by side with buzz every every second of the album.
i have concluded that Toadi Acceleratio is all adam, no buzz.
also adam clearly plays the lead guitar at the end of Pink Bat.
anyway, my question is, on the 20+ minute title track, there are 2 main guitar parts.
i believe that one of them is played by buzz, and the other is played by adam, so which one is which?
IMO, adam plays on the first guitar riff, (then there's like 7 minutes of lustmord) and then buzz plays the 2nd guitar riff.
anyone else have any ideas about this epic masterpiece?

I agree. Plus I think the trilogy was largely written before Kevin was in the band. I remember reading an interview with him where he said Buzz had given him a demo of The Bootlicker when he asked him to join... I think the slide bass on HAT is definitely Kevin's finest moment with the Melvins, and one of the Melvins' finest moments period. The end of Anti-Vermin Seed always leaves me wanting more. I love songs that are at their heaviest right at the end. Forty Six & 2 is like that too.
I dont think anybody has said this about Pigs of the roman empire yet.... but i look at this album as a sequel to Lysol.

Buzzo did say you would be surprised what it lustmord and what is the melvins.
So thats 2nd guitar could be lustmord and the noise could be adam?
I can tell on some parts what is being done by Brian Lustmord.
can you tell my private parts are something to lust more?
Give this album some love. It's been awhile.
i just go this album and its so killer
have they ever performed Pink Bat live?if not they should

it's not so clear, remember reading an interview where Buzzo said we won't never know who did what on POTRE 8)
iirc buzz mentioned some people thought they knew who did what, and that they were way off. that doesn't necessarily mean our assumptions are completely wrong. i do remember reading dale and toshi are responsible for the infamous pink bat intro.

I saw a 5 part interview with Buzz and Dale recently and when talking about POTRE, they stated something to the effect of, when you think it's Lustmord it's us, and when you think it's us it's Lustmord. Currently am studying this one. Love the breakdown on bloated pope. love toadi acceleratio (so do the kids) . . . . .

When Buzz was on Red Eye, he said that a lot of times they put songs on a cd that they don't plan on playing live.
Listening to this tonight (for the millionth time) . There are so many Tim Blake noises in this, I had to double-take a couple of times and convince mysef they weren't Gong samples.
This lands in my heart somewhere similar to Egg Nog - an essential part of the catalog, loads of great songs that you'd love to hear live. Even though the running time of this one is plenty long, it simply doesn't feel like you're getting a full experience once it's over. It leaves you wishing there were more of it, but not a thing you could imagine changing about it.

Personally i think it is a really great Melvins album. Put it this way - it would sail into my top 10. Agreed on 'The Bloated Pope', that one is easily one of my most liked Melvins songs.
Was just spinning this tonight, and I think the title track still contains two of their best riffs. An excellent album front to back with lots of surprises and unexpected twists. It holds up really well!
Hearing live versions of the track "Pigs of the Roman Empire" from around this time have given me a new appreciation. It really is a two part instrumental riff monolith. Or a bilith, perhaps.

I always assumed Lustmord had more to do with the sound than Toshi. It is a masterpiece, right enough.
When did Toshi move studios? Curious if that had anything to do with it. I think around 2011 I'd say the Melvins recordings hit a patch of middling quality. Curious if it coincides, maybe different preamps, mics, or something?
But then Five Legged Dog sounds amazing.

True indeed, but a lot of that has to do with Dale considerably downsizing his kit post-BB as well as Pigs being recorded at Hook Studios.
As cool as the Sound Of Sirens ethos is, that board (and tracking room) doesn't have the juice that Hook and Westbeach Recorders added to albums like Pigs and ASA.

Rimb, your inbox is full! PM coming your way!
I was listening to POTRE last night and read that there is an extra track at the end of the album on the CD that isn't anywhere else. Sure enough on the Bandcamp page the album ends with 'Idolatrous Apostate'. Dusting off my old CD copy it's a surprise to me to hear the hidden track. Basically two short, very Lustmord type interlude pieces with some silence between them. Not terribly essential at all but interesting that they are not acknowledged on the digital version.
Oh damn, I remember those pieces. Weird. Usually the labels just upload the digital with the silence and bonus tracks for the CD (annoying in its own right).
I'm assuming it was left off the vinyl entirely?
