I saw the Melvins live in El Paso TX on June 7th (Though I live in LA, tickets sell out so fast there that I've missed them a few times, it's also less crowded to see them in El Paso when I visit family) and talked to Dale for a bit. He confirmed that they're finishing the release they've been working on since 1999 with Mike Kunka of godheadSilo (he didn't specify if it was an EP or full length).
Also more Melvins Lite with Trevor. This is known.
But more a more interesting nugget came out when he said that they're working on a full length record with many of the bass players they've used, he said the record's name is tentatively "All Basses Loaded"
So a record with a revolving line of bass players including Trevor, Jared and Pinkus. I asked if Ruthmanis would take part and it seemed like he might not. But he didn't say no, he just seemed hesitant to confirm him.
Can't wait!!! :D :D :D
If they all tour together that would be friggin awesome.
so wait... the Kunka collab is supposed to be an album that allegedly featured three bassists.
The titles "Mike and the Melvins" and "Three Men and A Baby" were thrown around a bunch at that time.
and now their also going to do another album with Jared, Coady, Pinkus and Trevor all together on it as well???
they must have been free-bassing! to come up with this

The Kunka project is different than All Basses Loaded. Dale didn't specify if the Kunka album has 3 basses.

Dale confirmed this new album in the podcast interview. I think he says it's just called 'Basses Loaded'. Apparently it will feature the BB guys, Trevor, Melvins '83, Krist Novoselic and (if he wasn't joking) Paul McCartney!!
How on earth did the interviewers not ask him about McCartney???? They must have been asleep!
Also Steve McDonald from Redd Kross is playing on a couple of songs.
He said McCartney, but I think he said "a la McCartney" in reference to something. Not that McCartney was on the record.
It was a hard interview to listen to due to the phone lines lagging and being pretty quiet. It was hard to hear exactly what was said.

It's funny that I never once doubted the possibility of McCartney actually playing with the Melvins. At this point(well always I guess but especially now) who knows what they're gonna do next. Melvin and McCartney? Sure!

This makes sense - Steven McDonald is a total reincarnation of Sir Paul on the bass.
And this gets me closer to my dream of "MELVINS KROSS" with Buzz, Dale and Steven & Jeff McDonald as a super group. It just NEEDS TO HAPPEN!
im just gonna throw it out there that paul needs to happen.
a friend of mine on facebook said he was staying at a house in phoenix? i think or something like that anyway he said paul had once knocked on that very door by mistake because the neighbor builds guitars for him. kinda weird story but i would totally devote my life to trying to get ahold of paul and get him to play with the melvins before someone dies
It's just called Basses Loaded by the way.
September of next year.
Krist is definitely on it.
Trevor, Jared, Pinkus, Steven McDonald and Dale on bass.
They talked about it a bit on Protonic.
It's a full year away though, Mike & the Melvins first.

Great read about the album.
So what can be confirmed:
4 tracks with Melvins 1983 (All of Beer Hippy)
4 tracks with McDonald (All of War Pussy)
1 track with Pinkus (Captain Comedown)
1 track each with BB, Dunn, & Novoselic
does it seem to anybody else like dales drumming has turned boring after coady entered? before coady he always seem to play stuff that challenged the songs rhythms but now he just keeps a beat in most stuff. i mean its no big deal, but i think thats whats been missing for me for a while. there are still songs with killer drums, but especially their most recent stuff seems either rushed, or just lazier than the melvins standard. . . which is still hard working of course.
maybe i should word it as after coady he doesnt use toms all that much.
idk maybe ill warm up to it, but this kinda reminds me of captain comedown. it actually kinda sounds like a this machine kills artist song with electric guitar and bass and drums...

I think the obvious question here is have you heard the new (old) stuff from Mike And The Melvins? That project predates the merger with Big Biz by half a decade. Do you feel the same way about those songs?
No I don't feel that way about that album. Chicken and dump has boring as drums, but that's the only one I remember being bored with. I'd have to go back and listen to it all again but off the top of my head I know there was blast beats on the last song. Maybe what it is, is buzz hasn't been challenging him too much lately? I'm assuming he was the drummer on the dale crover ep, which had pretty straight forward drumming too so idk maybe that's a part of it.
So you want grinding, no set time signature type stuff, like GPT and Ozma? I don't see that happening.
No it just seems the powerful tom work is fading away or something. It's not the time signatures, that hasn't changed anyway. It's just he doesn't sound like crover as much anymore. Eh whatever, maybe I'm just being wayyyy too picky here haha. It's obviously just me.

I'd agree goldennugget that Dale has changed quite a bit since even a few years ago but that's always been the case with the Melvin's. I think the days of caveman drumming are over because they aren't ones to repeat old material or signature style.... I do miss the phantom beats and awkward pauses he used to do but hey, the new Melvin's over the last few years is good. Different but good. Always evolving and if they didn't I'm sure it would have all come to end years ago.
Why is an old dog being Judged for new tricks?
I dont think there are practical monetary resources available for the level of touring The likes of Arena level rock demands for any band in this day and age. Given the Age demographic of the band members one can presume the energy reserve would be pushed beyond maximum effort after so many hard Years on the road. They are going to save their Strength and also their hard earned dollars...wont be seeing the monster Rigs if these guys plan on putting away for a Retirement at the cost of a low level admission tickets and supplement that with an incredible home-grown merchandise racket. nor is it economically Viable To cram a Monster size Drum kit into a Rental Van and still have elbow room or change for Gas after all is said and done.
I like to think of the Monster kit as Dragon Ball Z Style Gravity Training after all these years, Dale doesnt seem to take much to get the blood flowing behind an average size kit, he is always warmed up best I can tell...I think that like any Olympic competitor he is Eating sleeping breathing Drum Abuser going in for the big win. He is making do with scoring a victory using whatever gets the Job done in his percussive Arsenal.
Flawless Victory.

With 'Three Men And A Baby' out next month and 'Basses Loaded' in June, that's quite early in the year so i wonder if there is a possibility that there could be a third Melvins record (released by Ipecac) for 2016 somewhere around Oct/Nov or such? After all, the band seem to have a backlog of recorded material sitting around and Buzz himself said last July that 3 albums were "in the can" ready to see the light of day.

I can't believe that 'Industrial Art' (the song that accompanied 'Captain Come Down' on 'Chaos As Usual') didn't make the tracklist for this album. It's far superior to the ironic, tongue in cheek nonsense that is 'Shaving Cream', for example, and a Melvins original to boot! Buzz needs his brain checking.
I don't like either. I do love Captain Comedown. It's amazing to me that someone is complaining about that song.
I dig the hell out of Shaving Cream but then again the impression I get is Melvins 1983 is supposed to represent a far more immature era than usual. Also, I never heard Industrial Art either.

Buzz said that Melvins 1983 is their more experimental, oddball side. Tres Cabrones was apparently recorded without any guitar just using that electronic gear that Buzz was photographed with a few years ago. To me, those 83 tracks on Basses Loaded have some of the same electro effects and things that the Tres Cabrones songs had.

About the Krist song, i remember Buzz saying in an interview last year that the song they did together was a Weird Al Yankovic tune. Just because he's credited in the liner notes with "guitar" means precious little. I can imagine Ipecac just list things rather straight forward in liner notes. Plus i could easily see the band liking the subversive, playful aspect of listing guitar yet none actually being present on the recordings.

Honestly i know none of you guys believe me but it was 100% mentioned as such in the interview. No guitars on the ALBUM. Just made to sound like it. I remember that because in reading it i thought "WTF!!". Now, the interviewer might have got the wrong impression from Buzz and wrote it incorrectly or simply made that up entirely or Buzz was joking but that WAS how it was written regardless. Admittedly it seems kinda odd to manipulate gear to make it sound like guitar when you could just use a guitar though.

I'll give it a spin, just to see what's doin, but no. You can't fake guitar strings with keyboards. The bends. The slides. The picking. The randomness of each pluck of each string on every strum.
Is it possible? Maybe.
Do I see the Melvins taking the time in the studio to pull it off? No. We're talking maybe 20x longer in production just tweaking the signals to sound like guitar.
There is possibly another explanation. Just playing a guitar through a modular unit and manipulating what comes out the other end. I would buy that.
There's no question that guitars are all over Tres Cabrones. Come on now. On a somewhat related tip, I'm bummed that they don't seem to play any of those tracks live.

Does it bug anyone else that some of the titles are slightly different on the album to what they were on the EP's? You know 'Beer Hippy' becomes 'Beer Hippie', 'Captain Comedown' to 'Captain Come Down', 'Take Me Out' is now 'Take Me Out To The Ball Game'. I wonder if it is an intentional thing designed to differentiate between the releases or just miscommunication - someone telling Ipecac the titles over the phone or something! Oddly the same thing happened with 'Dr Mule' which later appeared on 'Tres...' as 'Doctor Mule'. I know it's just a little, rather inconsequential thing but stuff like that irritates me greatly. I'd love to know what the band themselves see as the definitive form.

I hadn't thought of that but i wouldn't be surprised if it was true. Being that im not American and have below zero interest in Baseball, it really frustrates me that the band are so obsessed with the sport. Shoehorning it into everything. For example in almost every interview these days they talk about it, then there's this song and not forgetting Melvins version of your national anthem on 'Sugar Daddy Live' all have me reaching for the skip/fast forward button.
As regards titles, the main one that irritates me is 'Captain Comedown'. Separating the "Comedown" to "Come Down" totally alters it's meaning. At least to me. It's now no longer a song about a Captain called or nicknamed Comedown but simply asking the captain to come down.

If you actually read, i said myself it was an inconsequential thing. I just find that interesting or strange that the titles change. A bit like how Boris (the band) use uppercase or lower case lettering to discern whether a record is heavy or not. By that i mean the change is significant to them beyond being simply written one way or the other. Perhaps Melvins think this way too. As self declared hardcore Melvins fans, shouldn't those here also be curious over such otherwise small fry matters?
As regards being anal about as you put it "stupid shit", personally i find it similar to list all the Melvins gigs a person has attended BUT i know some people like that. I can see why that has relevance with folk after all, people have all sorts of interests. There's really no need to make fun of people here.
There is always a need to make fun of people everywhere.
I am sure that Melvins either really really care about their song titles and how they are displayed or they really really don't care.

I always thought there was too and it definitely does sound like guitar but i distinctly remember either Buzz or Dale saying there wasn't any. Just made to sound like it was guitar. Still, it may just have been a joke thrown out flippantly in the interview. Who honestly knows with those guys!
Quote from: ))))(((( on March 20, 2016, 04:42:08 PM
Honestly i know none of you guys believe me but it was 100% mentioned as such in the interview. No guitars on the ALBUM. Just made to sound like it. I remember that because in reading it i thought "WTF!!". Now, the interviewer might have got the wrong impression from Buzz and wrote it incorrectly or simply made that up entirely or Buzz was joking but that WAS how it was written regardless. Admittedly it seems kinda odd to manipulate gear to make it sound like guitar when you could just use a guitar though.
You're probably confusing this with the Mike & The Melvins album.
Buzz said there was no almost guitar on
that one – mostly just three basses.
Here's the interview: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/hear-a-track-from-melvins-thudtastic-basses-loaded-20160307
And here's the bit you're most probably thinking about:
QuoteNow, the funny thing about that is, and you can't really tell, there's almost no guitar on it. I'm doing all the low-end bass, Kevin's doing all the slide bass and Mike's doing all the stuff that sounds like guitar. The whole idea was it was going to be three bass players.
Good point. Looks like it has changed.
I like it, looks better than before.
The images are the same but the colors and background are different.

I think it was just simply a change. Everywhere is listing/showing the newer design now as the album. Im sure you'll receive the red and purple one like on the Bandcamp page. Still, i'd like to know why it was altered too however im not disappointed since i think this newer version works a little better than the earlier blue and red design. QuoteMany collectors are quite excited about the upcoming vinyl reissues of your Atlantic Records lps. What made you choose Third Man Records?
Dale: Obviously, Jack (White) cares about vinyl. We were very impressed when we went to Third Man and saw what he's done there.
Buzz: He's putting his money where his mouth is, that's for sure
Dale: Just his taste in general. He's not a guy who's spending his money on hookers and blow.
Buzz: Well he might be, but he's also spending it on other things. He seems like he's super interested in what he's doing and we appreciate that.
Dale: We're friends with his nephew, Ben Blackwell, who's worked at Third Man for as long as we've known him. I know that he's a big part of wanting to release those records. Then we recorded the live 12″ with them, which was a really cool idea.
Buzz: Yeah, that was fun. The show was being cut directly to acetate, while we were playing it. We like anyone who does stuff that's wacky and out there. It's that collector mentality and we like all that kind of thing, we get it. If we had access to the kind of funds (Jack White) has, we'd do things that were equally as weird, no question. I don't know if we'd do the same kinds of things but we would certainly do all kinds of wacky stuff. We already do. Plus, if those guys at Third Man go to Atlantic and say "we wanna reissue these Melvins records", that's different than if we do. They'll say "ok sure" to Jack White. If we approached them, they wouldn't return our phone calls.

All of the Melvins' songs are about baseball. This link only proves it.

Such a disjointed album. Im not sure if i feel that way because i've heard most of these tracks separately quite a while back though. There's some songs on here (and on other recent Melvins records) that although not terrible music, just really aren't my thing. I can listen to them but don't feel anything. It makes me wonder if i should even call myself a fan of this band anymore and that's a bit disconcerting. Have i outgrown them or they outgrown me?

A stream IS an album. It's sound all the same however it reaches your ears. I don't think there is anything wrong in listening to a release prior to potential purchase. What if you heard a record for the first time at a friends house or you listened at one of those in-store listening booths - is that "weak" also? What if a record is really bad and you spent your hard earned cash on a dud? Okay, you might say Melvins don't make dud's but not everyone will like everything. Not listening to a stream doesn't make a person a better or truer fan. It just shows your own particular preference for engaging with things.
I'm buying the album on Friday anyways but psychologically vinyl or CD is louder than MP3s.

Nah, don't worry Ian, you are not forced to like everything they do. I don't have enough funds right now and I still want to buy a lot of CDs so maybe by the end of June I'm going to order this album along with Three Men and a Baby.

I've had a few other people here tell me privately that they also aren't much for some of the recent Melvins albums or songs or their general direction. I think it's to be expected to some extent. Maybe im the only one to voice that openly. I remember John Peel said about The Fall - "sometimes they don't always give you what you want but they're The Fall". I think Melvins are probably the same. They are super productive and do what they want and i totally respect that, it just doesn't always interest me, personally. Perhaps if i was to sum it up i would say their sound is too upbeat and fun now for me to really, really enjoy. They mostly make "having a good time" songs now. Nothing wrong with that of course if people like that. I mean, on occasion i like that too. But it's hard to LOVE.

If you like the recent releases i think you will enjoy it. I'd say 'Captain Come Down' is one of the better songs for me. 'Shaving Cream', 'Maybe I Am Amused', 'I Want To Tell You' and especially 'Take Me Out To The Ballgame' are the absolute worst.

Now I'm somewhat convinced that all Melvins songs are about baseball in some capacity.
Meezer, was it you who said recently that Buzz was aiming for the mainstream or the big bucks or something? Trying to get 'Take Me Out To The Ballgame' played at baseball events. I don't know if MLB is a major site but as soon as i saw this stream was on a dedicated baseball site it made me think of that comment. I like that the band (or Ipecac) have took this kooky move but it does make one wonder. Reaching out to new listeners. Can't really blame them if the offer is there i guess.
Then you add in the double-drum lineup drawing some people by proxy, the fact they've been around forever, grunge nostalgia...
heard the track with Big Biz only. weird stuff
Does anyone wish, like me, that 'Industrial Art' (the track that was on 'Chaos As Usual') had been included on this album? I liked that bizarro, modem-esque soundscaped mish mash. Any idea who might have played bass on that song at all? Assuming the track had any bass of course! I thought it might have been Jeff being that it was paired with 'Captain Come Down' on the release.

I pointed out that Toshi had posted video on social media when they heard The Water Glass at a Dodgers game. They were excited about that, so Take Me Out would surely be an attempt to get more of their music played at games. Imagine this.
You hear the Water Glass before the game, the Star Spangled Banner before first pitch, Take Me Out at the 7th inning stretch.
Buzz has said before theyll do anything for a buck as long as its their music their way. Your only solace in that statement is that at least they're not big fans of taylor swift.

Damn , and Planet Distructo, it's got a Stag feel to it. i really want another Melvins lite album
I would kill puppies for another Melvins (Lite) album and tour.
..Im sure its already in the works. Dont Tell Buzz about the Puppies thing though, he is a Dog person.
More like, I would give the melvins Puppies for putting out a new Trevor Dunn Album.
Well give or kill or just letting them sleep in my lap, whatever gets that album and tour going.
I must add that first track on the new album is a wonderful way to start a new Melvins record too.

Yeah something of a departure. I can't remember a Melvins album starting in such a fashion before. I guess 'They All Must Be Slaughtered' is the only other one that comes to mind in the sense of the opener being slower and less immediate.

hey cool! I was checking out Planet Destructo and actually recognized that first part it as an "unknown" song the band used to play live in the 90's, and it was actually put out as well ..
who knows which song I'm talking about?
Thanks for that tidbit! I know Buzz said often many new songs are actually old ones that were kicking around or previously unfinished in some state or another. You've got me wanting to hear the older live version now!
Got my CD/hat today. The album has too much swearing. My kid was laughing too hard at "Shaving Cream".

I love Big Biz Melvins so damn much!!!!!

I can hear him on backing vocals, drums are anybody's guess.

If anyone wants a download code for Basses Loaded, PM me. I've only got one, so first PM gets it.
The highlight for me is maybe I'm amused, new melvins territory once again. Beer Hippie is good as well, like this record a lot. Could do without shaving cream but I actually could listed to ballgame again and again
I love all the songs. But shaving Cream is so awesome.
I can listen to it over and over.
After listening to the 5 first, the opening I like, a lot, 2, 3, 4 is ok and the 5th, Captain Come Down, is a real ballbuster!
.....listening......listening......
War Pussy is the next highlight, riffs from another world!
Is it just me, or does Buzz have som Ozzy Osbourne over his vocals in some of the tracks, that is Ozzy-likeness. I`m sure this is unintentional, but I like it.
This record will work like a blast live and on my car stereo!
For some reason Shaving Cream is not with on this stream:

Flutter, your level of Melvins fandom disturbs me! Is there anything they have put out you DON'T like??? Having said that i wondered recently if you appreciate a lot of their recent material because you are a big Ween fan. That's an act i just can't get into personally because i hate "goofy" music. Where i disapprove of that stuff you perhaps like it. Hence why you like Shaving Cream maybe?

Dangit!
In the liner notes it says "backing vocals by Kristy Joy" who's that? Im sure i've read that name before somewhere. Jared's wife or something perhaps? I wonder which song/s have the backing vocals.
Another thing is last night i watched that recent interview with Buzz, Dale and Steven and Buzz says that the songs on Basses Loaded where effectively sitting around. That they realised they had some of these songs recorded with different bass players and decided to put it out as an album. A similar thing happened with Everybody Loves Sausages too. I wonder if this is the shape of things to come from now on for the band. Simply recording new songs and then making them fit together as and when they wish to be considered a new record. I did think the album was a bit disjointed which now makes sense but at the same time i think there is something neat about that. About the concept of a compilation, an arrangement of, what you could term, odds and ends.

Not the first time for Melvins Ipecac CDs. I just checked and both Houdini Live '05 & Chicken Switch are standard jewel cases w/ album art on the front. I do like when the album art is on the back. It makes total sense, the space is bigger. Thank God these are not those oversized digipaks that Ipecac favors lately. I can deal with digipaks if they are the same dimensions as a jewel case(ie. orginal Honky pressing). These odd, slightly oversized ones drive me nuts, plus half the time they don't bother to put the CD in a fucking sleeve :x. Don't have BL today, should be in mailbox tomorrow.
Cows - Daddy Has A Tail(yellow vinyl) showed up at my doorstep today though.

"I've been a fan of the Melvins since 1993, and I've spent a lot of money on their CD's, shirts and shows, so I've earned the right to say this: for the most part this album is great, but the silly, "humorous" stuff has been wearing thin on me for the past few albums. Blatant, throwaway filler crap."

I'd say it's not wrong to laugh at laughable music, but i personally don't want the bands i like or admire to be laughable. Im sure no one does. I've mentioned this before, but i have a real problem (read that as "dislike") for humour in the arts. That makes me sound like a very boring, overly serious killjoy but i do like humour and fun in life. Just definitely not in the arts. For me, that's so one dimensional and i hold such pursuits to higher standards.
Yea I dunno. I haven't given the record a good headphones, lights down, focused all the way thru listen yet but just the first impressions so far are that planet destructo and maybe I am amused are not great. Also since I've already heard the majority of these songs on the original releases, it makes this sound like a collection instead of an album. But I like a lot of the other songs. I love decay of lying beer hippie and captain comedown. Choco plumbing is pretty great. War pussy Phyllis Dillard and hideous woman are ok. And I like shaving cream and take me out. I think it's kinda cool how they are doing these novelty songs on the Melvins 1984 albums.
Listening to it today while grilling at home with some brews. Love it . It's like the companion album to Everybody Loves Sausages, but this one has mainly original songs.

I've never really understood why people say pretentiousness in bands is a negative trait. I don't think it matters either way if a band takes what they do seriously and delve deeper into it. For me it's all about the outcome at the end, not how the musician's themselves relate to or communicate their craft.

I like the funny stuff too. Some people feel like it breaks the thematic parts of the "Serious" songs, but I think they act as a nice counterbalance. Also, although the funny songs are funny, they aren't just funny. "Shaving cream" and "Ballgame" have more to them than just being amusing. "Shaving cream" has a really neat, bizarre growth, from a music standpoint.
Really liking this album so far, however...
I still have a complaint about this and the last few releases (bar TMaAB) regarding the drum mix. They sound really quiet and hollow.

When you put it in that context it's even better. Honestly the first time I heard "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" I had a big grin. It's utterly beautiful.
That said, procured a CD copy today. Even if it is a bit disjointed at times I'm really enjoying it. Curious about the September album even moreso with two Melvins albums to hold us over.
That also said in closing, we have a trilogy of Melvins albums in 2016 and they're all (Barring the third one somehow isn't good) really solid! Not bad for a band nearly 35 years in the game!
The McDonald tracks remind me a lot of the Deutrom years.

That's weird! I got my CD last week and it has the line up for both songs in the liner. Dunn and Novoselic respectively.
I'm really diggin' this a lot more than I thought I would. I don't know why I thought I wouldn't. Probably because I'm kinda over the silly songs but when I listen to this album I love it all.
So far my stand out favorites are Choco Plumbing which is funny because I like Jared the least but goddamn you can't fuck with those harmonies! Plus it's just a fucking crazy song. Lot's going on, on that one. Then Planet Destructo is my favorite at the moment. Hearing the Melvins do actual Jazz is just, I don't know, fuck. Hearing Dale doing that traditional brush jazz drumming and Trevor not just walking the upright but straight running the fucker, then Buzz doing just that simple little Teen Spirit lick. It's gold. If they made a whole album like this I would smile.
In the end though there isn't anything on here that I would skip or say is filler, because this album is KILLER!

I think Toshi's work kicks ass, and none of this is my business, but I wish Buzz and Dale would make some records across town with Joe Barresi at his studio.
I couldn't agree more. Mike and The Melvins has for me just been a reminder of the very noticeable shift in their sound and I personally like the fat, thick sound Barresi gets.

The liner notes give a break down on each song with the different bassists but oddly omit both Planet Destructo and Maybe I Am Amused.
That's weird! I got my CD last week and it has the line up for both songs in the liner. Dunn and Novoselic respectively.
Hmm that is strange. I wonder if the European versions are all different or the printing on my copy was wrong. I looked a few times because i thought it was odd myself that they didn't mention those songs.

In all fairness, you're right. The production quality has been pretty good since Freak Puke for sure. I thought Hold It In was a little too quite but once you find the sweet spot with the volume it sounds great. Basses Loaded sounds really good too. When I think about it you're absolutely right.
There's this sound though that I can't put into words because I just can't that is on all the album Barresi has touched that just feels like a big heavy, fuzz warm beefy blanket. I mean Stag, Honky but the real kicker is he played the role of engineer on Stoner Witch and that is in my humble opinion their best sounding record. Sound wise, not music wise or song writing or anything like that, in fact Stoner Witch probably isn't even in my top ten but it sounds amazing. It's like the first QOTSA album. That had engineers summing their pants and rightfully so! In the end I think they all sound great and with a catalog like they have it can be easy to like a certain producer or engineer rather over a different one.
If I had a gun to my head and was forced to try to explain that sound I would just say "2 inch tape" is maybe what made the difference, but that's just a flailing guess. But it's the Melvins so anything they do is going to eventually sound good to my ears no matter what and that's what makes the Earth go around....Right?
I dunno, I think that since I had only heard the previously released songs when they streamed online, this album doesn't feel disjointed to me.
it does make me long for the big business and Melvins (Lite) line ups.
like I said earlier my favorite release since Freak Puke.

This is my favorite since Hold It In! I'm in love with it. I'm enhanced headphoning it right now and Planet D just played and I felt the happiest I've felt in kinda real long time when they bust into the bebop. It brings me feel good.
I've heard War Pussy once awhile ago and nothing of the new stuff so this is pretty much all brand new music to me and it's making me feel happy and better. With the headphones you can really hear McDonalds back up vocals and it's another magic harmony machine, like Jared and Buzz. McDonald has such a great voice and the War Pussy stuff it's just perfect with Buzz and especially Dale.
Good stuff as usual!

Im not entirely sure why, but i really dislike it. When im listening (and enjoying) the album it gets to 'I Want To Tell You' and i start groaning inside! It feels so out of place to include a "bop along" silly song right there. Or anywhere! I like The Beatles but it's just not Melvins to me. I'd be fine with something like that as a B-side to a single but on an album it just feels throwaway. Worse still, a tongue in cheek throwaway. Same goes for those other tracks i removed.

It's ok that your opinion is wrong.
The choice makes sense with Steve McDonald playing on the song. I wouldn't be surprised if it was his suggestion to do it. I don't find it a tongue-in-cheek throwaway in the least bit. You have a better arguement with Ball game and shaving cream being the tongue-in-cheek throwaways.

Those are additional throwaways!
I always have this thing with Melvins where i wish they would write and record their songs and then hand them to me to sort out and decide which ones make the album. Yes, i am a control freak! But then no more great records scuppered by a few terrible song selections.
Finally got a copy of the album and for the most part it's solid even if it is a bit disjointed at times. The Decay of Lying seriously gets better with each listen, easily my favorite song of the bunch now. Really the only track I'm seriously "meh" on is the Krist track. It is a good song and fun as hell but it just sounds like an indie rock track with cool solos (No surprise that Pitchfork did praise that tune!). "Choco Plumbing" and "Planet Destructo" are excellent and "Captain Comedown" is finally growing on me.
Overall an 8 out of 10. Easily one of the better Melvins albums of the 2010s.

Review from thequietus.com (http://thequietus.com/articles/20351-melvins-bases-loaded-album-review)...
Melvins
Basses Loaded Josh Gray , June 4th, 2016 09:50
The very fact that the Melvins still exist, albeit it in whatever form perennial pig-head King Buzzo chooses on any particular day, should be a cause for constant celebration. Not only are they the last of the so-called 'proto'-grunge acts still standing without requiring a post-rehab reunion (or 'the last band standing' as Krist Novoselic describes them in the trailer for upcoming documentary The Colossus Of Destiny), they seem to have been permanently afflicted with whatever the polar opposite of writer's block is since 1986. With their new effort and the recent delayed release of Three Men and a Baby (recorded with godheadSilo's Mike Kunka back in 1999) the number of LPs the band has spewed out now stands at 23. 23! That's enough Melvins themed novelty coasters to legitimately cater for a full Hawkwind reunion tea party.
But though Buzz 'n' Dale have never had a problem retaining their creative flair, they do seem to have a problem holding down their low end. Lori Black, Mark Deutrom, Kevin Rutmanis, the list of corpses in the Melvins' bassist morgue goes on and ever on. As their latest LP's name suggests it seems that the Melvins have now fully committed to operating a revolving door policy and have simply opted to make an album that features six different bassists across its 12 tracks.
So let's get the review formalities out of the way: Basses Loaded is excellent. Like every other Melvins record it holds its own identity while oozing the same sweet black guitar sludge they have re-perfected many times over the years. You know what to expect by this point. The album shreds, it grooves, it pummels, and it turns all the lights out and showers your still, petrified form with hard rock spittle and leaves you begging for more. Now let's get down to the more important business of stacking up each bassist to appear on the album and ranking their individual contributions shall we?
6. Krist Novoselic - Plays on 'Maybe I Am Amused'
Without a doubt the most famous four-stringer on the album, one of history's greatest sidemen and the closest thing to a household name a bassist can get without adopting a monosyllabic insectoid moniker. How can a legend such as Krist be relegated to the bottom of the scoreboard you ask? Because the man stopped really being a bassist the moment Nirvana swansong 'You Know Your Right's rolling bassline faded into silence in 1994.
These days if you want to work with Krist you have to sign a contract stipulating that he will play one part bass and three parts accordion and the accordion will also receive 50% of the songwriting credit and royalties. The jaunty walking bassline he plays is fine enough, but you know that deep down the only collaborator he really wants to hear from is either Kurt's ghost or a Parisian mime troupe, whichever reaches out to him first.
5. Trevor Dunn - Plays on 'Planet Distructo'
A long-time King Buzzo collaborator in avant-garde supergroup Fantômas, it seems only appropriate that Trevor should provide the oddest bass section on the album. Preferring his trusty double bass to the more compact models heard elsewhere, he starts things off nicely with a dose of jazz bar noodling under a sustained guitar preamble. However, as Buzz's beeline riff gains purpose and momentum what started off as a refreshing change of pace quickly becomes an act of self-sabotage and the song dissolves into an irritating jazz-fusion clusterfuck. It just goes to show that what might work with Mike Patton won't necessarily work with any other human being.
4. Dale Crover – Plays on 'Beer Hippie', 'Shaving Cream', 'Phyllis Dillard' and 'Take Me Out To The Ball Game'
A return of the 'Melvins 1983' line-up which sees drummer Dale Crover move to the role of bass guitarist with forgotten founding member Mike Dillard picking up the sticks. Dale's telepathic connection to Buzz's broiling brain remains unbroken even when he abandons his beloved toms. The growling low end of 'Phyllis Dillard' is one of the meatiest moments on an album purpose built to soundtrack vegans' nightmares.
Despite his respectable fretwork, Dale's spots on the twin sea shanty skits 'Shaving Cream' and 'Ballgame' lay bare his role as a placeholder bassist, only to be utilised when he and Buzz have exhausted the phone directory. Every second he spends away from his drumkit is a second that could be spent teaching Mike Dillard how to play the fucking thing.
3. Steve McDonald – Plays on 'The Decay of Lying', 'I Want To Tell You', 'Hideous Woman' and 'War Pussy'
The veteran Redd Kross man teamed up with the Melvins to record last year's War Pussy EP which provides much of the backbone for Basses Loaded. Steve's guest credits include everyone from novelty metalheads Tenacious D to tween-rockers Fun, so he obviously has no problem blending into the sound of whichever band requires his chameleonic services. 'Hideous Woman' sees him following Buzz's zigzag songwriting style without missing a trick while single 'War Pussy' proves that the pop-punk pioneer can spread sludge around with the best of them. If this whole thing turns out to be nothing more than a glorified audition process then King Buzzo could do far worse than to add Steve to their line-up on a more permanent basis(st) (sorry).
2. Jeff Pinkus – Plays on 'Captain Come Down'
Jeeeesus those bass chords. This isn't the first time that JD Pinkus has joined forces with his fellow perpetrators of the 90s' very finest fuzz. 2014 saw him and fellow Butthole Surfer Paul Leary adding some tectonic heft to Hold On creating a serious contender for best riff of the 10s on the savage 'Sesame Street Meat' along the way. Even though he sticks around on the album for less than three minutes his presence is palpable. This is the closest the Melvins have come to recapturing the detuned power of their seminal stoner rock template Lysol in quite some time, and God it's good.
1. Jared Warren – Plays on 'Choco Plumbing'
If there's one Melvins album that can rival Lysol in the raw power stakes it's their 2006 pulveriser (A) Senile Animal. With the help of Big Business's Jared Warren on bass and Coady Willis doubling up the drum sound, Animal proved to be a masterclass in how to knock down perceived walls between what was considered 'accessible' and what was considered 'heavy', putting Josh Homme out of a job in the process. Seriously, every one of its tracks sounded like it should have evicted whatever trite the Foo Fighters had churned out that year from the top of the alternative rock charts and stayed there til kingdom come.
The greatest compliment that can be paid 'Choco Plumbing' is that it sound like it should have been on that album. Though everyone remembers the double-drum jackhammer attack, they often overlook Jared's role in coaxing out Buzz's more melodic side with his knack for a (civilised) earworm and a playing style so complementary it could be cast as Hugh Grant. Jared's playing style matches Buzz's stroke for stroke, occasionally even outstripping the King himself, and his unique harmonies fit the band's vibe perfectly. Hell, even his hair rivals Buzz's.
Jarred and Buzz should spend every waking hour together. They should write together, perform together, live together, shower together... the list goes on. For a while now the Melvins have continually switched up their vibe in an effort to become the best version of themselves they can be. The truth is they found it a decade ago. Long live King Jared.
Damn, that praise of Jared & Coady is pretty glowing. Interesting review for sure.

Wow. Pinky is starting to make sense! :-s

What's with all the Jazz hate? Irritating? Clusterfuck? Really? I must be the only person who finds this part of the album the most satisfying. That King Jared shit too, gtfo. This guy probably jerks off to a picture of Jared photoshopped together with Buzz. It's good but not that good.

Hey man Choco Plumbing is for sure one of my favorites and I think it goes without saying that yes Jared and Buzz sound great together but that last part of that interview is just creepy.
It's this that really has me dumbfounded "...an act of self-sabotage and the song dissolves into an irritating jazz-fusion clusterfuck.", like I said it's pure bliss to me but I love Jazz too so I don't know.
Bah! To each their own I guess. It is funny that he's cumming all over Jared and Buzz harmonies but says nothing about Dale and Steven and that they sound imo just as good together as Jared and Buzz and I'm willing to bet we're gonna hear more of how much Steven fit's with, well everything. I kinda like that his harmonies are a bit buried on War Pussy but it would be nice to his back ups more upfront. The very end of The Beatles cover you can really hear his voice and I love it. Plus live he sounded great with both Buzz and Dale.
I'm going to listen to the album again to be fair but I'm starting to accept the Melvins are not quite my cup of tea anymore. I miss the heaviness and crunch of past albums and thought they might've rediscovered it a bit on The Bulls & The Bees EP but it's not looking like it. Too much easy going fuzz and too many silly songs not weird like HAT but out and out childish like silly in recent times.

I feel EXACTLY the same. Don't get me wrong i can, on some level, still enjoy the records. They are remarkably listenable in an easy going way. I love the dynamic quality to them also (in the sense of the flow of the records) but like yourself i do find myself looking backward and thinking "is this even the same band?". It makes me wonder what Buzz and Dale think about this - are they oblivious to this change/decline? Having said that i will always look forward to whatever they release next.
Oblivious to the change/decline? If that thought popped into my head I'd stop and ask myself, "who the fuck am I to even think for a second these guys don't know what they're doing and/or are oblivious to some subjective change/decline of their records?"
These motherfuckers are in their 50's and have played, written, thought about, and thoroughly presented more heavy music in the last 30 years than damn near any humans on earth. Constant music, and at a pace that would wear out the average heavy musician after a very short time. Anything the Melvins do is cool with me, even if I don't get the same goosebumps that I got as a teenager from some of their other stuff. If they're tired of something and want more melody, different tempos and song structures, whatever it is, it's got to be an important part of staying interested in this shit. They know this, and just follow along or make the songs you want to hear yourself.
I'm not trying to be rude to you, Ian. This general artistic discussion comes up from time to time, and the Melvins angle has popped up before with friends, and it bothers me. Like a backseat driver annoyance, and I want to say, "motherfucker, you wouldn't know anything of what to do behind the wheel, so shove it."
I don't usually chime in on reviews but this one really is loaded (I'll see myself out...)
I like it, it's fun to listen to and this concept was bound to be actualized.
But I do agree that they could do with a cohesive album at this stage. We know they've wanted to abandon the traditional album format since Bride (but did they really?) but the last couple records were spread a little thin. Like ))))(((( mentioned, certain tracks (especially the ones leaked in advance) leave you feeling nothing. Which is a rare thing after being pampered for 30+ years.
Their work ethic is obviously untouchable and everything I'm saying here is very lofty criticism, but I don't think any of us would be mad if they released an album a year and have that be a more focused project with less cutting room floor elements.
And to touch on the drum sound discussion, switching up engineers wouldn't hurt either. Tosh is the shit, but 15 years is plenty.

If they're tired of something and want more melody, different tempos and song structures, whatever it is, it's got to be an important part of staying interested in this shit. They know this, just follow along or make the songs you want to hear yourself.
Believe it or not, i actually feel much the same as you too. I see both sides. As you mentioned about being thankful for anything the band put out i concur. Im glad there's something and not nothing. On the whole i enjoy things but it doesn't appeal to me, to MY tastes as much. I think us, as fans have a right to be able to say that or discuss openly what it is we like or how we think the band view their work. We are not necessarily correct but it's views all the same. But yes you are right bands are free to change or do whatever they wish. I still think the band don't really see the full picture though.

I'm not sitting their grinding my teeth either but my mind certainly wanders. To me what I've always liked about the Melvins is they offered up something probably no other band does if you feel like chocolate they've got an album for that or if you feel like vanilla an album for that or strawberry an album for that but I think the last 5-6 albums have been too samey like slightly different versions of the same flavour. I think they know exactly what they're doing the more straight ahead rock would be easier to write/play and more chance of appealing to a wider audience. I always remember that Buzz quote about HAT (their best album IMO) it went something like "If HAT was such a great album than why I do I have boxes full of that album in my garage I can't sell?".
I agree I always look forward to their next release and to their credit they churn out the albums some might argue the focus is more on quantity than quality but I would rather a band I liked churning out the stuff than say a RHCP or Green Day waiting 4-5 years between albums. At least with a new Melvins album if you don't think it's great the next one is only right around the corner.
Not directed at anyone in particular (seriously, enjoy reading every poster here on this forum) but Melvin's wouldn't exist if they didn't evolve. Besides, who wants to hear 15 albums exactly the same? Most bands just recycle or run out of ideas the first couple albums. Melvin's haven't declined, they've evolved into whatever they felt like and that's good.
As Rusty said, these guys are in a different place in their 50s than they were 20 years ago. I think it would be worse seeing older musicians try to make Ozma 2016 and capturing the raw Aberdeen days or trying to make another Maggot record...it would be forced and that's when musicians end up in dangerous territory, playing forced music.
Melvin's are handling it really well, yes I too miss some of the older aspects of Melvin's (like their odd time signatures instead of now straight up rock or whatever), but it's still there if I ever want to listen to Boris again or roadbull. Hold it in and three men are pretty good at that too. fact is they are an eighties band that to this day is always relevant, always interesting and can always challenge listeners. The last band standing and never need a lame comeback album or reunion because they are always there making music for you. It's okay not to like their new albums but it's not possible to question why they are different now, it's essential for them to be able to keep going forward.
Oh...on the joke songs. I just only wish they make their humour a bit more subtle ....I could do without shaving cream, 99 bottles or tie my pecker to a tree....but then again it's the same band that put out prick 22 years ago. :)
I for one wasn't saying that I want the old days back at all. They did what they did back then so there's no need to do it again. I just feel some of the current stuff to be a little uninspired.
I still love them but I guess I can boil the problem down to this:
I can actually accurately guess what a new album will sound like. That isn't a good thing.
I think we can all agree they need to just remake Bullhead again and again til retirement. :bs:
Really into this album. It feels like a greatest hits album across all of those different lineups we are so lucky to have, except with tracks I am not already familiar with. Every track is great and the Novoselic one might be my favorite. Accordian? Yeah! And the Trevor tine is so badass. I love that they have finally gone "out there" with that lineup - I mean, why shouldn't they be playing some avant garde improv jazz? More of that please!!!!!

Yes, greatly so and i mentioned this fairly recently. Well, not from the sources you mention but the difference between the album tracklist and those same songs on the prior EP's. Inconsistent stuff likes this annoys me a lot. Same goes for the songs 'Amazon' and 'AMAZON'.

Two different songs
I know. Although going by track numbers on the album it's technically 4 different songs!! It just always bugs me that not only were all the songs split in two on The Maggot but that Amazon and AMAZON weren't titled differently to avoid confusion.

Avoiding confusion is a pointless and fruitless endeavour in these times of confusion ... embrace the chaos like a lover, full on French Kiss with the confusion in life ... give it the tongue whist pinching it's juicy ass ...
the breaking of Maggot tunes into couples strikes as extremely 1990's ... like hidden tunes and all that crap ... man, the 1990s, just like the 80s, but even stupider

As fas as what is being discussed on this particular page I could find something I agree with in every comment made thus far and I could argue every comment thus far. No opinion is the wrong opinion and people have a right to their own. Just because someone says they find their new stuff lackluster doesn't mean they suddenly hate the band. It's just not their tastes anymore. Big Val isn't saying fuck the Melvins, I hate 'em and I highly doubt Big Val (sorry I'm just using you as a reference point, not trying to single you out at all) while suddenly not enjoy them at all. Yeah, I could agree and disagree with one thing or the other. It's personal taste.

Let's remember that when Prick came out at least for me, when I bought it the joke wasn't subtle at all. Nor is the "Shit Sandwich" 7". To me these public domain songs they've been doing lately isn't really much of a surprise and while some I can do without (most actually) it's in my opinion a very logical thing for them to do and I just don't really see how it's any different than the "jokes" they've done in the past.
I would also LOVE to hear them record with someone other than Toshi but at the sometime I enjoy everything he's recorded. I thought Holed It In was too quite so I turned it up and guess what? It sounds great!
I'll always stand behind what they do wether I like it or not. Why? Re-read Rusty's post. That's why.

Bought Basses Loaded at the very limited mech table at Babel, together with the Melvins skull tee. Other than that they had the poster for the gig at Blå in Oslo? Why on earth should I be
interested in a poster from this top secret lads patting each other on the back and securing each other tickets for the gig, before anyone was able to order one single ticket? If the Babel one had been for sale, I would have bought it, the only one that was avaliable was the one hanging on the wall when you came in and that was ripped off the wall by some fan, before we came out.
Ive got a few tix left...
Since there has been the Beer Hippy and War Pussy vinyl EP's, i wonder if they'll do another soon with Choco Plumbing, Planet Destructo and Maybe I Am Amused all together??
One would think that but Basses Loaded is getting a proper vinyl release through Ipecac...

Goddamn. On headphones these songs are great! I think this is one of their recent albums where I think it's perfect.
Got fat ass. Dale is a God. I really like his bass tone in a hard on kinda way. Planet Destructo's Jazz.
I would kill someone for a fair price to get them to do a whole album of Melvins Jazz. I still just start to smile when I listen to Dunn and Dale just ripping it. Plus it's some amazing Jazz anyway so at least an ep or something.
I would ER someone for a real decent price. Lemme know.
What would Fletcher think of Dale's Jazz drumming on Planet Destructo?
Overall I really dig this one. The ones with Pinkus and the '83 lineup feel extremely similar to their previous albums (fairly samey), but I was pleasantly surprised by the McDonald ones, the Dunn one made me want another Lite album, and the Jared track made me want another album from that lineup. Plus the Novoselic one was neat.
I get the folks who feel that Melvins have been a bit a "samey" lately, but I think there are moments on every album that are unique. For those folks take heart! I believe Buzz and Dale will eventually tire of this particular strain of Melvins, and they'll go off on a different tangent. Then there will be people who pine for this era. :D

It seems like I've heard this about every album since Nude With Boots. Do people think this album sounds like that one? I don't get it personally. :-k
I've only had the chance to listen to this one a few times but I really like it so far and it doesn't really remind me of previous efforts. The album feels like it's more about chilling out to the atmosphere with the occasional fast hard rocker thrown in. If anything the vibe kind of reminds me of Honky although the two albums sound very different.
I suppose it can feel a little disjointed but I guess that's inevitable with 6 different bassists going for different styles. In the future I'd probably prefer full albums with each bassist instead of a "compilation" album.

I've never really understood why people say pretentiousness in bands is a negative trait. I don't think it matters either way if a band takes what they do seriously and delve deeper into it. For me it's all about the outcome at the end, not how the musician's themselves relate to or communicate their craft.
Well by definition pretentious means, "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc.,
than is actually possessed." The average Joe at your local coffee house who is trying way too hard to impress girls by playing songs that sound like Oasis, closing his eyes when he doesn't really feel anything, and is a bit of a douche is pretentious. The average writer for Pitchfork media is pretentious.
Some people have called Tool pretentious and I never understood that. They've always had a lot of humor in their songs and I don't think someone who puts the lyrics, "I sold out long before you ever heard my name." is pretentious. It's a bit subjective determining what is and isn't though.
Let's look back at the last couple of Melvin's release and ask if they really do sound the same?
Basses Loaded
Three Men and a Baby
Hold it in
Tres Cabrones
Freak puke
All sound different to me than most bands in their career.
I do hear similarities between tres Cabrones and basses Loaded but then again basses Loaded is literally a bsides album. Most of these songs weren't on the final albums of previously mentioned ones
If you take Three Men and a Baby out of there as that was really recorded in '99 and go with:
Basses Loaded
Hold It In
Tres Cabrones
Freak Puke
The Bride Screamed Murder
I think they have a pretty similar sound quality, tempo, tone and song structure for the most part.
I'm really liking The Decay of Lying though.

For myself, i don't think it's because of the different bassists. Other than when Dunn takes the stage with his upright bass, i can hardly tell (if at all) what changes in the songs on the album. It could all be one guy as far as i can hear! Personally im having a hard time telling if i feel this record is disjointed because i heard most of the songs separately to begin with. Im not sure if that is the reason and the record is fine or if it is the record itself that makes me feel this way.
Been listening to it a lot for 2 days, since it finally showed up.
I hadn't listened to the unreleased tracks yet.
Choco Plumbing - my favorite. Been 3 years since we heard a new track from Big Melvins (Black Betty, Attitude). Glad it's an original that we can sink our teeth into.
Planet Destructo - excellent, but challenging. The main chord progression and vocal melodies in the first verses of the song sound like some mid 60s folk pop. I love the free jazz break.
Maybe I'm Amused - it's weird. I'll give it that. It's a grower.
Now that the general population has heard the track War Pussy, anyone else agree?
The intro is totally Alice In Chains.
Listened to it with friends last night, i think its their best work since bride. From bulls to three men it seems the band has just been experimenting with their style like mad with the revolving door concept. Each of the releases from 2012 thru three men have moments that are wonderful, but were not consistently enjoyable to my ears. Basses sounds like a summation and the beginning of a new phase, and its the first long player since bride that i am playing straight through over and over. Other than that hideous beatles cover, which i assume was purposely designed to make me slam shards of glass into my ears. So this one goes onto the post millennium highlights list for me. Hat,senile, bride, bulls, basses.

Yes, i think it's probably the worst track on there.
I had another listen to the record today on headphones and skipped the songs i don't like (Tell You, Shaving, Maybe, Take Me Out) and i have to admit my comment about the record being disjointed doesn't hold up at all without those tracks. It's a great album like that. So i'll blame those songs for making me feel this record doesn't work.
All 12 tracks = 7/10
Edited version = 8.7/10

This is my worst post ever! No, it's okay that's a valid question and i can see why people wonder why i say things like that. I didn't say it was "terrible" i just said it was my least liked so far. I was kind of joking about the link thing.

This video is very internet-y.
The video was exactly what I'd expect from a Melvins video.

received the vinyl today.... a little suprised by the tracklist:
A
the decay of lying
choco plumbing
beer hippie
i want to tell you
B
captain comedown
hideous women
planet distructo
war pussy
glad i have the 10 inches too.
missing however the track with novoselic (on vinyl).
i wonder why they left this out on the record?
I think that is absolutely disgusting behavour by these record companies. Selling a vinyl version of an album and then missing off songs. I can see why they do it with space restrictions but still it's a joke. Very deceiving too. On the plus side, at least 'Shaving Cream' isn't on it!!
My guess is that it wouldnt fit on the LP without adversely affecting the sound quality. How long is the album?
they could have easily included the novoselic track (which is, so far, nowhere else availavle on vinyl). no complaints though - the 8 tracks work perfect like this... runtime is around 35min...
you never know what you get with the melvins.
Album is 45:56 on CD with 12 tracks.
Maybe I'm Amused is 2:45
I got it in the mail a few days ago and haven't even looked at it. That shit bums me out, and I probably wouldn't have bought it on vinyl if I would have known they were gonna cut tracks. I guess it's not all bad, I never did get my hands on Beer Hippy.
Something for AMREP to release in the Fall (Autumn).
Yeah, I'm fine with just the beer hippy 10".
Still kind of a shit move. I recall quite a few people complaining about the Hold It In vinyl.

Yeah I think *technically* that should all fit on a 12 inch LP but then again no, that wouldnt Fit well on a pressing without losing huge amounts of Quality Im afraid, Im sure they tried it with a test pressing...but 45 Minutes is really close...was probably almost too close to call, they played it safe, Nude With Boots on Vinyl suffers profusely this very issue, and I think that album is about the same amount of time...so they cant win...people would still complain about the quality over the quantity, its a double edge sword.

Nude With Boots and Bride Screamed Murder both hit close to 45 minutes and were both single LPs (I recall NWB's vinyl having issues with the packaging as well.) but that loses sound quality too. I think it's the same issue as Hold It In. Leaving tracks on exclusive vinyl while the Ipecac release vinyl versions that aren't nearly as limited or expensive (As far as we know.).
That said one thing they could do is double LPs. Or just stop making albums close to 50 minutes and keep them about a length of Senile Animal (41 minutes) or Three Men and a Baby (36 minutes).

I have no problem with the shortened tracklist on the LP, I'll be buying it. I would have left off the Beatles cover, and put in Phyllis Dillard. I'm surprised they didn't include ...Ball Game, since that's part of the theme of the whole album concept. The tune with Novoselic is sort of filler anyway. I mean it's good, but the weakest of the "serious" songs.
I have a copy of Disco Volante by Mr. Bungle on 180 gram vinyl. Total run time is 69 minutes and 31 seconds. I don't have a high end system by any means. I have a Stanton deck, and a Shure cartridge that ran me $50. It sounds great to me.
I'm just saying that not everyone has a multi thousand dollar audiophile quality rig, and personally, I'd rather have every song.

right?
That running time cant be correct for the LP, Its got a double Groove cut doesnt it? that would make the pressing very shallow, and the 180g LP would only slightly compensate for that.
Anyway regardless of omitted Tracks, you could simply TAPE the Vinyl and add squeeze the tracks back on with the Ten inch too. Thats my plan to combat the missing cuts at least.

Not 100% sure on the length, but the reissue (Plain or MOP) do not have the double groove. This is only on the original WB pressing. Platypus was supposed to be a single, that's why the original came with it on a 7". I don't know why the reissues didn't give you the 7" (except for the first 1000 on Plain Recordings), but the plates have Carry Stress and Secret Song as 1 track like the CD. I would also assume the same masters were used by Plain and MOP. They don't seem to be different with the exception of Plains have what sounds like bad surface noise. My Green copy on Plain isn't that bad, but the regular Black is terrible. I stress surface noise, not to be confused with colour or the crap in the Atlantic thread regarding colour vs black (something I have never agreed with anyway).
There could be a bootleg of Disco Volante in circulation possibly, might be the plain one with bad sound floor?

Possibly, but I did get both of mine upon release. I do recall everybody saying the same thing at the release of Plains also. Some even bagged everything they do. I have others, but they are fine to me, it's just that release. It sounds like how I've seen bootlegs made where they make a mould off the record. Or maybe dust got in the clear protective coating. It honestly sounds like the record has scuffs, but you can't see them.
As for the sound floor. The LPs seem to not pick up what I've noticed the cd do. All pressings are the same for this. The cd starts quieter than it finishes. Like what NIN did with Hurt. The WB pressing is the best though. MOP followed. Plain didn't seem to fuck up California. I have had others say this is the same, but mine is exactly the same as MOP for that.
I've moved from Ethers point though. He was on about the length. The album would be the length of all songs minus Platypus. Typing this makes me think it sounds like shit because Ether would be right. It still includes Nothing and the Hidden Drumming Track. I don't recall it on the WB pressing.

Hideous Woman is the one track on this album i just cant get a handle on. not sure if i like it or dislike it. there's a few parts that i think are cool (the bass line in the middle section for instance), but it mostly just confuses me as a track.
lot's of great songs on this album though. and a then there's ball game, which is where i turn the album off.

I had to laugh a bit of this:
"Seems like just a bunch of studio shit they've done over the years with different bassists. Not like it's some kind of bass driven concept album. Also, when I heard Krist Novesselic played accordion on it I threw up in my mouth a little bit."
Utterly shameless plug here but I tackled my own review of it, mainly isolating what I feel were the stand-outs. It's definitely an unorthodox album to tackle in that mindset. I don't think I said it here but I did think Mike & The Melvins was the better Melvins release of 2016 so far...

Probably top 5 of all time Melvins releases for me. That list is ever changing....
Picked up the vinyl this week @ Record Theater in Buffalo for $17. No QC issues on my LP. Looks and sounds great. I sort of like that the LP is different than the CD, with the shortened tracklist. If I want to hear all the songs, I'll play the CD. For the meat & potatoes of this outing, will spin the LP. Besides that, 8 songs on a full length LP just works. It's what the best Led Zeppelin & Black Sabbath LPs had.
BTW the record store I went to had no copies of the Third Man reissues. I should have, but didn't think to ask if they had some and sold out quick or just hadn't gotten any in yet.
I've only listened to the album through YouToob and loved it. I bought the cd the day it came out but ended up giving it to a friend for a road trip he was on. I should go see if my record store has the vinyl.
Had one of my weird occasional extreme vivid dreams a few days ago. Somehow I was in a studio at a radio station where they were interviewing them on the air. Then the DJ goes to play some of the album and it was Shaving Cream. Somehow the DJ couldn't turn it off and Buzz was laughing at him. I knew it was a dream pretty quickly because at different points Buzz had both his original short hair from the Ozma picture and then had his fro-hawk from around 93 or so. Eventually Krist was there to do his song but then my alarm went off

Perhaps because of the way they had some of the songs released ages before in the form of EP's, it's hard for me to think of this as an album. Or at least a cohesive one anyway.

I've been listening to it a lot for a few weeks. After the US portion of the tour I got it out and it's been back in rotation so to speak.
I definitely dig this album and still rock it on the reg. I think because the band puts out so much material, it's hard for older stuff to stay "in discussion."

that's true, i can remeber when they played that part of the song. it was the time when they played two sets, one with Buzz on bass and Mark on guitar
this song just came by on shuffle, had completely forgotten about this! i always loved this song "noise" from the barbaraal 7" soooo much, great that I can now go to this version instead!
btw a few years ago barbara stok, who put out the barbaraal 7", released a comic book on vincent van gogh.

ok bye
Thanks for bumping this thread! Haven't listened to this in years. I was lucky enough to score one of the limited bundles for it. The vinyl came in a Mackie pressed inner and outer sleeve. Mine is either 4 or 9 of 88. The handwritten silver sharpie is a bit blurry, and there's another number/number that is crossed out. It also came with a shirt and a handmade booklet of Buzz telling the story behind the whole project. Just threw the vinyl on!
