Looks like we know "Hot Fish" from the Flipper CD, all four tracks from the Mullet EP, and Good Night Sweetheart is a cover.
Super weird that two track titles repeat.
The title is freaking me out a bit. I hope it's an inside joke or something.
I like the art. It's big. I should be an art critic.
Very cool.
Got one of the custard LPs 8)
Thanks Stoner!
Finally first album in 3 years glad they're back but not sure about those song titles lol
thank you stoner for the headsup.
custard vinyl still available from the euro store: https://ipecac.tmstor.es/
also preorder for HAT and Gluey!
had Bouncing Rick leaked yet, this song sounds familiar :-k

EDIT: ok, extract from Mullet EP #-o
Dillard's beard makes him unrecognizable.
Sounds great!
Blixt still has custard/poster.
I wish they would just put out a parody album to get that crap out of their system.
I wonder if the repeat song titles could be in the same vein as The Maggot. Also could "Fuck You" be a Subhumans cover?
Either way? STOKED. Hi-Ho Silver Vinyl, Away!
AWESOME!!!! I really quite like the cover art. Not what i was expecting either. Same goes for that album title too! God/Dog is a nice touch. Anyone else pick up on the fact that 'Hund' is German for dog?

I'd imagine this one is a re-do of it. Since the Flipper one had those guys and Trevor on the recording.

Makes me wonder if this time the repeats are actually just two versions of the same song but done in totally different ways. I think that could be pretty cool.
A special mention for the description on the video above.

The album bring back together the 1983 lineup of Buzz & Dale with Mike Dillard. "I Fuck Around" is the band's homage to the Beach Boys, along with "Bouncing Rick". The release will be on CD, Digital and three different vinyl variants includes standard Black as well as limited-edition Silver (2000 worldwide) and Custard (500 worldwide).
This album is a treat!
It's loaded with all kinds of interesting songs.
I've said this before and I'll say it again, listening to the Melvins is like taking a drug trip while watching a movie about someone on a drug trip.
This new record is no different.
Thank the maker that King Buzzo and Dale haven't burnt the bridge with Mike Dillard because if they had we wouldn't have the Working With God album at all.
That would suck.
Working With God could be considered a little more focused than the last Melvins' 1983 album, Tres Cabrones, but that's debatable.
This album was recorded in two sessions because drummer Dillard has a boring straight job in his home town of Montesano, Washington. He used to have a job making tooth picks out of logs but he got shit canned for showing up to work drunk one too many times. At his new job as a union machinist they don't care how fucked up he gets as long as he does a reasonably good job.
Union jobs....
Must be nice asshole.
Anyway....
King Buzzo and Dale live in Los Angeles and Dillard lives in Washington state so it makes it a little tough to record and damn near impossible to tour, so they do what they can.
A few years ago they wanted to bring Dillard along on a Melvins tour of Australia so Melvins 1983 could open up on the regular Melvins shows. When asked, Dillard stopped that nonsense with a flat no. When asked why he said no he said he had no time for ridiculousness but MAYBE he'd consider it at some point down the road once he'd built up enough paid vacation time.
Working With God is a damn good record.
It's the album bands like Green Day and Metallica wish they could put out if they only had the guts.
Foo Fighters maybe but probably not.
Once again, no guts...
It takes true grit and real lower middle class tenacity to take on making a record like Working With God.
It's the no bullshit approach that turns people on.
At this point everyone's sick of everything so Working With God makes perfect sense.

Nabbed a silver copy. Bummed that I slept on it and didn't buy the custard for 1. Dollar. More. Last night when I had a chance.
Looking forward to another round of Melvins 83. The opening track seems like a joke, but I'll bet they actually put a lot work into it. Same with a lot of their "joke" songs from the last 1983. They're pretty intricate if you take a close listen
Bouncing Rick, that gives me Lustmord-vibes, brilliant!

I imagine 'Goodnight Sweet Heart' will be pretty close to this 2011 version. It is intriguing to me that sometimes covers the band perform live take a good few years to finally appear on a studio release. I wonder why that is.

Im sure there is some kind of other thing being alluded to. But maybe not that, but possibly. I think it's quite telling that within the two "O"s of the cover it reads "good" and "dog". Buzz has spoken before about how he sees his dogs (and dogs in general) as "spiritual giants". Perhaps there is something going on there in the title.
As for 'I Fuck Around', i think it is interesting that the album starts with that rather direct, rude message and yet ends in (as far as we currently understand) a sweet, sincere farewell message to ones sweetheart. It is interesting to me how they are both polar opposite bookends in this respect. Both old covers and yet so opposed in manner.
QuoteI imagine 'Goodnight Sweet Heart' will be pretty close to this 2011 version. It is intriguing to me that sometimes covers the band perform live take a good few years to finally appear on a studio release. I wonder why that is.
It's great they have such a vast catalog of deep cuts and covers to draw from. There must be over 100 non-album b-sides, singles from 7"s, live recordings and tracks from compilations. Any of those could sliced and diced in numerous ways for future albums. Slowed down, sped up, sung by a different singer, turned into electronica, played with a ukulele. In theory, the Melvins could play forever, releasing just a couple of originals and using older material and covers for the rest. See Euthanasia, Untitled #2 (Noise) and some of their Electroretard remixes for examples of repurposed material.
How I'd love to get updated versions of Sawed Off and the Love Canal single.
I sometimes fantasize about a gluttony/residency style live record where they just play this rare stuff. Pigskin/Starve would be awesome with Steven.
Gots me a silver one...almost missed it
I'm sure it'll be a divisive one but I love "Fuck Around" as far as arrangement and performance. I also loved "Stop Moving to Florida" so there you go, I guess.
Also a bit interesting that we're nine pages deep on the "Mullet" thread and two days on this one, but themelvins.net homepage has no new announcement since White Lazy Boy.

No, i quite like it too! Especially as an album opener! I do kinda wish Buzz had sang a second verse in the second half instead of the "fuck around" being repeated quite so much. In fact that first verse is my favourite part of the song - how he re-wrote the original Beach Boys tune around the inclusion of "fuck".

Yeah, i mean as a song in and of itself, it isn't really very good. But in the context of a record and how it kicks it off, whilst knowing the bands tongue in cheek sense of humour, i think it isn't too bad.

Yes, that's the clear frontrunner so far. By a country mile!
Since we've heard 'I Fuck Around' and 'Bouncing Rick', i can't help but wondering what the song between these two 'Negative No No' might be like. 'Bouncing Rick' sounds almost like what you would expect a typical Melvins opening track to sound like. Whilst the opening Beach Boys cover has it's strong dose of Melvins' unexpected silliness that they sometimes like to serve up for the second track on a record. So these two things make me wonder about track 2. Could it be an instrumental piece of some kind or something slower and weird?
If the world gets back to normal and we can start to travel again, now that the vaccines are starting to be handed out in some weeks (to risk groups first), then I hope by Lord almighty that we can see the Mighty Melvins live again and Bouncing Rick will definately be a crowd pleaser!

Kevin definitely wins. Counting collaborations he's on like nine albums.
I didn't credit Houdini to Lorax as it's been confirmed by multiple sources she's not actually on the album (Buzz in a few interviews, Billy Anderson on the documentary)

I wonder why it is that every Melvins Ipecac album that gets released, we hear about it MONTHS in advance of the actual release date. Every time it seems to be an eternity! True story, I have worked with Dale's brother for about 13yrs, we went to see them at the Paradise in Boston back in 2017 and in between baseball and Steve warming up, Dale showed us the Bad Move video on his phone.

That's something I've wondered about for 20 years now.. double track titles on Maggot with the Track changing in the middle of the same song.
I often thought maybe they did that thing to put gaps between tracks if you tried to copy the CD like an early form of stopping piracy?
And if it was just a silly joke, huh?

It sucks ass, though, when I put Maggot songs on my Apple Music playlists; when I use the 'shuffle' feature, it ruins my day and then I shed tears. But then I get over it because it's the Melvins.
Sooooo why haven't they done this with the other records? It does NOT make sense!
Previously i said that i liked 'I Fuck Around' and how it opens the record. Now i think i've had a bit of a change of mind. I now think it might have been better to have some of it tagged onto the end one of the other songs unlisted. Rather like that bit at the end of the song 'Hospital Up' (i think??) on The Bride Screamed Murder which suddenly goes into the short My Sharona/My Generation parody that Dale contributes. That works really well and as an opener to this record, im not sure a 2 and a half minute parody as an album kicks off really quite works. I stand to be corrected on that however upon hearing the full record.

I think you are right. Im sure if co-vid hadn't hit, the album would have come out last year instead. Maintaining at least a 2 year gap.
And yet they've put out two solo albums, four or five collab EPs, a solo EP, a live concert stream, and some truly killer re-releases and merch. We are a lucky bunch.

still tho
yeah, it's a cover. to be honest it doesn't change my opinion about it. i think the Beach Boys parody was probably ok, this was not necessary though
Someone on the video called it "dad rock", im not familiar with the original but songs like this from them do seriously make me wonder. I don't hate the song. It's catchy and i had it stuck in my head this afternoon. But from Melvins i expect something much better than this. It's times like this when i hear these types of songs that make me wonder if the band are really as awesome as i like to think they are.
I think Melvins need to ditch the covers for a bit and concentrate on a collection of tight, rocking, great songs. I mean, (A)SA doesn't have a single cover song on it and it's awesome!
There's a tier of Melvins covers by which I judge all the others. Green Manalishi, Sacrifice, Lexicon Devil, Youth of America, Jerkin Krokus.
The next tier has most of Sausages, HAT B Sides, PAT, Crybaby, Kiss covers, Flipper covers, etc.
Then there's this one and a few other classic rock and novelty tunes that really don't do much for me. Oh well.

You forgot Halo of Flies live. 8)
they extensively covered Ballad of Dwight Frye and for awhile they did The Nile wayy back in the day (Not sure if it's inspired by the original Floyd or the Voivod cover of this)
Not to forget Okie from Muskogee
Off topic for sure, but my favorite cover of all time is Jerkin Krokus by Mott the Hoople. The Green Manalishi is a close second. I think the batch of HAT covers is really great. Mainly, I like how they were recorded. They just sound great! The Melvins have released a shit ton of covers. In fact, that's kinda what they do now. Every release in the last 10 years has at least one cover and it has helped pad the length of their albums.
And you thought the traditional song covers were ridiculous? I love it.
I'm going to guess that 0:11 second "Fuck You" after is just a really short version of the Stiffs/Subhumans song.

There's a tier of Melvins covers by which I judge all the others.
So true. Green Manalishi is way up there at the top of the lists for me!
It is remarkable just how many recent Melvins albums feature a cover song. Especially the last decade or so! Just looking through the discography i think these are the only ones without covers. The Maggot one could say "covers" Bob Dylan at the start i suppose.

Im not too much for it myself. But if i enjoy the cover song then it usually turns out good. I think it is telling in a sense that most of my favourite Melvins albums DON'T feature a cover song! Im not sure how i like the idea of them "padding out" a record.
Also in a way, im surprised they include as many covers as they do. Buzz has said a few times that he has so much material written or half written. I imagine it would feel better to get that out of his system than record yet another cover.

Still excited for this record. Even if there's only two more tunes in the vein of "Caddy Daddy" and "Bouncing Rick" and the rest is weirdness, it will be a great return to form. I also really hope they play at least one of these songs in the veep streams.

I keep thinking that too. I'd love to see Caddy Daddy get an airing but based on past Melvins tendencies i'd say unlikely. I keep thinking it will be songs that they have been playing live fairly recently. Im gonna guess Sesame Street Meat, Amazon, Revolve, Night Goat and The Bit.
Back to the covers, did the Melvins cover themselves on AWWL&D with Euthenasia?
I agree with most of you. I would like the Melvins to do more original songs instead of padding their albums with covers.
However, I enjoy the covers a lot, especially the "obscure" ones because, well, a lot of them I didn't realize were covers.
I'm really digging this '1 Fuck You" track though. I wouldn't have known it was a cover had it not been mentioned in the media.
Nevertheless, a solid, all-originals album would be awesome.
I disagree, I like covers. Back in the day it was more common for a no-name group to do entire albums "in the style of" a more popular band to sell a record.
The Covers that The melvins play have turned me on to some great bands and music I might not have otherwise taken any notice of.
I'm glad they put covers on their albums from time to time.
Not a fan of the recent covers but it is what it is. Melvins still rule. I will continue to support them and buy their records because they're still better than 98% of the garbage out there.
"Shock Me" and "My War" and "Tattooed Love Boys" and both Sabbath tunes are all recent covers that kick ass. I would have no problem with these being album cuts. When I can either hear the Melvins "take" on a great song (vs just a tribute) or when I can hear the Melvins DNA in a song, I think it's album worthy. There is no too much or too little.

I heard a couple more of the songs last night before they disappeared. 'Negative No No' and 'Boy Mike' are both cool Melvins songs and probably better than i was expecting. '1 Brian...' is basically a simple intro to the main song of the same name. Repeating the title of the song. 'Fuck You' is one of the most pointless tracks ever. It is just a continuation of '1 Fuck You' which personally i feel should have been combined together as one track. Both the 'Brian' songs feel like that too. That it could have just been ONE track rather than broken up. But it does make a bit more sense on that one than it does for 'Fuck You'.

I keep wondering that too. Not so much "why?" but what version is it? It would be strange if it is the one we have already heard on the Flipper split since that was Dale on drums, Trevor on bass and Flipper adding back up. Perhaps the one on this record is a re-recording with the 1983 line-up instead.

Just got the Silver Vinyl in the mail and listening to a digital download right now. Maybe it's my headphones and listening to it in the car will be the real test but on the first listen the mix on this is THICC and Buzz's guitar tone is absolutely monstrous on this record.
The question isn't so much the covers is rather if they're going to top this one at any point in the 2020s?
I feel like a pretty good bar is set right now. Maybe if a new Melvins Lite drops with a solid guitar mix?
Almost all of the new songs are absolute bangers. I didn't like "Hot Fish" at all when I heard it on that Flipper EP and while I still think the song is lame that mix makes it suck a lot less. Take or leave the filler tracks too. But this album is a crunchy-ass record and the songs have a lot of tenacity and energy throughout. The covers are fine and make perfect palette cleansers to have a laugh. "Goodnight Sweetheart" is pretty amazing too.
First listen and I'm really liking it.

I did wonder how you would view this record since you loved Tres Cabrones so much. Nice to hear you adore this one too. From what i've heard so far, i'd say it's a fairly solid Melvins album but not a fantastic one. Probably about an 8/10. A good return from the guys but i'd have to guess that they will put something else in the future that will match it or beat it. After all, 9 more years of this decade is a long time in Melvins years!
https://newnoisemagazine.com/album-review-melvins-working-with-god/
I just got my CD in the mail. I immediately listened to it from beginning to end. Here are some stray observations:
Tracks 5 ('1 Brian') and 9 ('Fuck You') are completely unnecessary. However, they do add a certain Melvins charm, so I'll let them slide.
Two of the tracks that were not released in advance, 'Negative No No' and 'Boy Mike' are my favorites so far. Very crunchy and heavy.
Is it just me, or does 'Caddy Daddy' sound like it was recorded during the AWWLD sessions? It feels slightly out of place here.
I compared this version of 'Hot Fish' with the one on the Melvins/Flipper split, and I couldn't detect any difference. Maybe someone else will spot something.
All in all, this is a very solid album. I am quite pleased with the originals and even some of the covers ('1 Fuck You'). 8/10

Blabbermouth gave 'Working with God' 9/10!
QuoteIn short, "Working With God" is a fantastic MELVINS album. Compared to the rest of their own catalogue, it is relatively linear and clear in intent with a focus upon well-written songs. The odd humor and experimental mindset aren't entirely abandoned here. It's just more appropriately employed to augment the songs rather than drown them out, which has been an unfortunate tendency of some MELVINS songs over the last 20 years. With "Working With God", MELVINS 1983 is essentially a beautiful song that plays in the middle of a burly brawl, exploding inside your favorite neighborhood dive bar.

there are many harry nilsson songs i'd rather they covered, but i do dig their take on you're breaking my heart.

Was peeping to see if the new album dropped on iTunes yet (even though I own the silver vinyl) and found some insider info from Buzz himself breaking down each of the tracks. Not sure if this has already been posted:
I F**k Around
"This came out of soundcheck. They'd go, 'Can you do your vocal check?' and I'd start in with 'Round, round, fuck around, I fuck around,' to the tune of the Beach Boys song. It always got a laugh out of people. And then we eventually thought we gotta record it. So I sat down and wrote lyrics for it. Melvins 1983 is where that kind of stuff really comes to light, because we all have the same kind of sense of humour, which my wife says is perpetually stuck in eighth grade. Which is true."
Negative No No
"I wrote these lyrics while driving around in the car, listening to the demo. What I'll do is I have my notebook with me and when I come upon something, I'll pull over and just write it out, right there on the side of the road. I do that all the time. You couldn't work that way on public transpo. Sitting on the bus singing out loud is not really going to work. You'd be beaten up or considered insane, which is probably not far from the truth."
Bouncing Rick
"This was the nickname we had for our high school biology teacher. Me and Dillard had all kinds of names for people at the high school. This guy bounced around when he talked—I think it was out of nervousness—so we called him Bouncing Rick. But we're the only ones who called him that. So as soon as I said, 'Bouncing Rick', Dillard knew who I was talking about. I don't know that the song is really about him, though. I think it would be more about the challenges of a second date."
Caddy Daddy
"People think this is a golf reference, but it's actually not. It's Cadillacs. I wouldn't write a song about a golf caddy—I've never had one. But I've never had a Cadillac, either. When I lived in San Francisco, I saw a guy walking through the Fillmore District with a baseball hat on that said 'Caddy Daddy' on it, and I wrote it down. That was probably 30 years ago, and I've had it ever since. But the song isn't about that. It's more about thinking you're smarter than you really are."
Brian, The Horse-Faced Goon
"The first part is a song that we came up with a long time ago. We used to sing it exactly like that—'Brian, The Horse-Faced Goon', trying to imitate Ethel Merman. So we've had that version for years and years. And then the second one is about a Florida kid shooting dope in a hurricane. Dale wrote the music for that one, which is the new song. The hardest part was figuring out how I was going to fit the phrase 'Brian, The Horse-Faced Goon' into the lyrics, which I did."
Boy Mike
"This might be one of my favourites. The way it started out and the way it ended up was tremendously different. And I really like the ending on that song—I think it's really fucking cool. I think it sounds really weird and creepy. I couldn't say exactly what that one's about, but Boy Mike is not a real person. At first I was thinking it could be about a microphone, but I don't think it is. It's one of those songs that ends up far surpassing your expectations. I love when that happens."
F**k You
"This is our Harry Nilsson cover, which was a no-brainer. His song was called 'You're Breakin' My Heart'. According to the documentary about him, he wrote it about his ex-wife. Nilsson was a strange cat—he never played live. This was a song that I've wanted to cover for a long time, and I changed the lyrics to be as offensive as possible. We really liked the beginning with us screaming, 'Fuck you!' so we decided to isolate that for the second song. If you take the two 'Brian' tracks, 'Boy Mike' and the two 'F**k Yous', it's like a nice little EP in the middle of the album."
The Great Good Place
"I think this is Dale's favourite song on the record. I might be wrong, but I think the title is a reference to the freaks at Andy Warhol's Factory who thought that they'd found a place where they could do whatever they wanted, but then Warhol ends up getting blasted. I might have had that in mind, but it's not directly about that. And then there's that saying along the lines of 'If you let everyone in, you let in madness, too.' So you've got to be more specific about your guest list."
Hot Fish
"The music for this one was written by Trevor Dunn, and I wrote the lyrics. We actually wrote this song for Flipper. We did a limited-edition EP with those guys playing on it, but we decided to redo the song and put it on this record. I can't think of a band that has had a bigger impact on us than Flipper. The title comes from seeing them at a club in San Francisco in the '80s called the Covered Wagon. In the back, there was a kitchen with a deep fryer. Those guys had this fish made out of metal that was about the size of a bowling ball. They'd drop it in the fryer until it was red hot and then throw water on it and carry it onstage screaming, 'Hot fish! Hot fish!' I never forgot that. The funny thing is, when I brought it up to those guys, they didn't remember it."
Hund
"This is a song that I wrote for [Buzz and Dale's side project] Crystal Fairy, but we never got to record it. So we revamped it and did it with Melvins 1983. It has some pretty hard guitar-playing on it, as far as the soloing goes—that's about as hard a guitar solo as I'll ever do. But the song is kind of a multifaceted nightmare—it's got a lot of parts to it. Mike and Dale did a really good job working this out."
Goodnight Sweet Heart
"We've been wanting to do this on an album forever. We used to do this song with the Big Business guys—we'd do it as the last song of the night. Then I met one of the guys from Sha Na Na when I was golfing at one of the little par-three courses I play. He was there all the time, so I got to be friends with him. He told me the reason they loved doing that song last is because it was the shortest song they did in their whole set. So we open the record with a Beach Boys song and close it with a '50s doo-wop song. It just seems right."
^ interesting info. thank you for sharing.
Hmmm might check it out. Some positive feedback
This one seems to be a good one.
I like "I Fuck Around". The "yeach" (Dale?) makes me laugh out loud everytime, it's very funny!
There are some good thrashy weird Rock in there, even if some riffs sound a little familiar... Well, Buzz is Buzz, that's his identity. And that's allright.
There is a good cartoon / "video game going nuts" vibe, also a "funny dream going sometimes-nightmarish-but-not-totally" feel.
And the sound... is real cool!
Whatever: good work!
Have to dig more.

An excellent find!!! Thanks for posting that. It's fascinating hearing about Buzzo's writing process and the thoughts behind the music. I wish we had more of these sort of interviews or facts being discussed about their songs. Im sure we would all be surprised by such revelations about some of the songs we love so much.
Really cool record. I'm coming around to the covers. The originals are all awesome.
Even though they both keep slipping out that Dillard can't do the complex time stuff, I think the groove on "Negative No No" is plenty tricky.
"Boy Mike" is my favorite so far. Sounds like half Basses Loaded half Maggot.
This version of "Hot Fish" sounds great. I'll have to see if I go back to that Flipper EP how they compare in the long run.
Great find on the iTunes comments, thanks!

It just seems right."
thanks for posting this, I love it
Nice to hear Buzz's guitar again. I haven't heard those deep, guttural chugging sounds since Hold it In. This album is rippin'. I've only played it a couple times and it seems solid. Peppered with some jokey stuff. First impression is that the boyz are just having some fun and blowing off steam.

I wonder if Buzz has any other Crystal Fairy songs knocking around which he could redeploy with Melvins. Although personally i still think of the Crystal Fairy record as a one-off Melvins release with Teri singing.
It's really weird seeing Buzz go full deep dive and explicitly talk about songs like this, what they're about, etc. I honestly liked the weird vagueness and using your imagination when hearing the lyrics. Buzz writing a song about second dates is going over my head in ways I couldn't imagine

I know, i don't recall him doing this before or being so open about his process. Usually i tend to see him give quite straight forward, maybe jokey off-hand remarks that shut down the discussion when people ask about things like that. Personally this type of stuff is what i love to hear about more than a musician's thoughts on baseball or politics or whatever. It's so interesting. I'd love to hear him talk more about his notes with words/phrases and titles in them. To see how he collects them and how he may go back through those old notes.

Even though they both keep slipping out that Dillard can't do the complex time stuff, I think the groove on "Negative No No" is plenty tricky.

Mine came today!
Yup was def getting a We all love Judy feel here.
I keep getting the line from 'Hund':
"Animal, animal, you're just..... FOOD!!"
Stuck in my head. One of the best songs on this thing.
Too hokey for my taste.
That Brian Goon Face ditty is BOSS.
I don't quite understand the foldout art in the CD. Why five images of the explosion? If it were time lapse I'd totally get it. But they seem identical.
I picked up on a few more things I really like about this record. The tone of the lead riff in "Brian" is really hot. I don't know if we've heard that since the Kevin years.
I also like how in "Caddy Daddy" and "Brian" you've got the words "goon" and "motherfucker" used really percussively with either pitch effects or just guttural delivery.
I like the backwards intro to "Good Night." I feel really lucky as a fan.
just received my custard vinyl. will put it on later.
btw: ipecac europe still has custard and silver available: https://ipecac.tmstor.es/
"Brian The Horse-Faced Goon" could easily become the main theme for the opening credits of a weird and offensive cartoon!
Really funny album.

Did someone else heard a kind of "the return of the black stooges" in a drum pattern for a few seconds in one of these new songs? Don't remember which one, have to check that.
Like Dillard was blinking to Dale in a drum fill (and yep specially "Black Stooges" drum "solo" on HAT).

although i had heard it yet, i must say that Caddy Daddy is one of my favourites. speaking of songs i hadn't heard i think Hund and Boy Mike are both badass. i must say some of these songs would totally kill with Crover on drums. i can hear the drumming is a bit generic at times for Melvins standards, but i guess that was the intention as Buzz said, to stay very simple
Got the CD a few days ago & my standard black vinyl today. The sleeve was kind of scrunched up causing the LP to have some light scuffs. Ridiculous . Why? The fucking shrinkwrap was proper, and the jacket wasn't warped.. I hit it with some D4 cleaner, and now looks better, will spin it soon. I'm sure there will be some surface noise. As long as it doesn't skip, I guess I'm fine.

Blasphemous! ;) I love PAT one of their best IMO but I can't speak to this new album I haven't heard it yet.
God damn, this record is fun. I think of the band that made Prick or Tora or Colossus. These are punks in the best sense of the word. From Sausages to Hold It In, PAT, and all of the Melvins 1983 stuff, there's a sense of irreverence that wasn't quite there in much if the 2000s. Death and This Machine were still pretty "serious" and I hold those records in high regard, too. But this one is just completely "rad."
Yea Melvins 83 is a pretty good vibe.
I think it's really cool that Mike, Dale, and Buzz are friends. They crack me up sometimes.

Fun record. Not one of their best but that's a high bar. Definitely a couple I'd love to hear live when that's a thing. Lots of heavy riffs interspersed with juvenile punk rock humor. I'll take it. Also, Mike is a really good drummer. He's no Dale but who is and it's cool to hear a different take on Buzzo riffs. If you're debating buying this or not, buy it.

Agreed. I don't think anyone needs to downplay his playing, he fits in really well. In fact, if it i had just heard this record without knowing it was the 1983 incarnation of the band, i doubt i would even have noticed the difference!

As much as i love music, im not really a "musical" individual. For instance, i don't play any instruments or such. In a sense, i don't think im the type of person who (perhaps like many here) actively or passively dissects what it is they are listening to. When people comment "check out the bassline in this song" it tends to be something i haven't noticed.
Unless a particular instrument glaringly jumps out of the mix or makes itself known, i tend to think of a song in it's totality. As it's whole. Similarly i cannot say i have favourite "parts" of songs. I don't observe what i hear as constituent auditory elements. To me they are simply just songs and i either like that song or do not. In a way i prefer that. I would hate to hear a song that i liked only to think "oh that guitarist is doing something so simple there, so this song is stupid!" or such.
I used to keep a list of my favourite members of bands under what instrument they played. But now i don't really care for that. For separating up acts. Like the songs, i just think to myself - "i like this band" or that i don't. I just gravitate to what compels or moves me in some way.
I must say though, of what you speak, i find these sort of topics very interesting and illuminating. I've made it known a few times on here in the past that i come from an art education background. So i think i relate to music and bands somewhere from that direction. Less musical and more in terms of, lets say, statement. In terms of what the band are doing and how they are presenting themselves rather than what it is they are actually playing or doing physically to put those songs out into the world.
Speaking of art, what would you think of a Van Gogh self portrait if you saw one up close? Maybe you have. Personally, I was mesmerized by the three dimensional aspect of each painting. Every blob of paint had its own set of characteristics: volume, colour, shape. They were practically sculptures rather than paintings. Oops, I'm digressing. What I'm getting at is that your art history classes must have exhaustively covered intention/decision making in every brush stoke, so I find it interesting that those considerations didn't cross over into your musical analysis. In a sense you're lucky, though; if you decide to dig deeper into what the Melvins are doing you'll be gobsmacked at how good Dale really is. It was a revelation to me when I first "got it".
As for this album, I don't know how the fuck you guys can be so excited about it.
yeah, i think drumming is super weak and generic on this album. at the same time i must admit that recent melvins stuff didn't impress me too much about drums, even when Dale was playing. maybe it has something to do with the production in general or with the fact Dale changed his style a bit.
I dig it. I listen to a ton of more intricate music like jazz, funk, and prog but I grew up into punk so I'm cool with basic and generic as long as it sounds cool. There's a lot of complex music that doesn't do it for me. Mikes drumming sounds cool in my book. I did notice some interesting drum parts that I wouldn't expect a basic punk or metal drummer to do. Idk. Quality heavy metal and punk to my ears.

yeah, the album is fun and sounds fresh, being simple doesn't mean it's bad.
Stallion, i recall you saying over the last few releases Dale's drumming is becoming more conventional. more of a four on the floor type feel than his previous style that always threw us curveballs. nothing wrong with either in my book necessarily. i'm more about Buzz's riffs to be honest.

yes, of course. i think after the collaboration with Big Biz the drumming changed in a more conventional style. i think the drums is not the first thing you notice now. live is a total different story fortunately

I agree. I've seen a couple of Van Gogh's paintings but not recently enough that i can remember what they were like exactly. However i know precisely what you mean by that. Quite a few painters use paint in sort of sculptural qualities. Often many paintings have a very different effect on us when we stand before them than simply seeing flat reproductions in magazines or on a screen or such. Rembrandt for example is someone who up close the paintings like a jumbled mess. Just disparate forms scrapped of brushed dry onto the work. Yet it is only in the whole that everything gels wonderfully together. Truly for me that is one of the things that make paint and paintings fascinating - that merging of surface and depiction. How they interact and tip over into one another. It has to SHOW something while also BEING something.
As you suggest, im sure some of that analysis for art probably does venture into the music i enjoy to some extent. But then music has been something that i explored parallel to my art studies. Both growing in my mind in their own ways. I am indeed pretty analytical about a lot of things (and myself) in life but rather weirdly not really with music. I just take it in like one might with eating food that one enjoys. I don't stop between each chew and break down what it is i am tasting and overly evaluate it. I just eat it. So yeah i guess for me music would be more closely aligned with food or some other activity that you just take in very naturally than something i would scrutinize or deconstruct.
Using the art analogy, I love how Melvins tracks sometimes hide startling things in the background. Whether it's bonus bits in between tracks, or noises and fills, or intentional hiccups in the timing.
On this album there are bits that are starting to appear. I got really into Dale's bass on "Fuck You" today. It's aggressively overplaying. It's ridiculous and it sounds great.
"Good Place" is really growing on me, too. I'm not tempted to skip any part of this record.
"Brian" is more like "Jeff Thomas" rather than the lesser novelty songs of previous 1983 records.
You've got it right, Mamazon!
Maybe some of the most interesting parts in this last album are the things a little hidden like what I call "harsh guitar" overdubbed (some things Buzz is playing here are totally crazy!).
I liked this one a lot. Here's my review: https://www.punknews.org/review/17471/melvins-working-with-god
Could have been the best EP in a decade if they'd left off the covers and Brian and Hot Fish. The six bangers on here are fire.
It's cool either way, I guess.
The covers are great!
And Brian AND Hot Fish too!
What do you dislike in Hot Fish, this is real close to the evil spirit of Flipper?! Acid and nihilist dude!
Im not sure why people hold 'Bouncing Rick' up there so highly. Im not so much for that one myself.
The first riff is ridiculously heavy and catchy.
Then you have a sort of very weird heavy pop song, listen to the vocals and chorus, you got something like The Sparks mixed with Guns And Roses and Ministry... fucking in a SM club backroom.
This is pure genius, ahahahah!
Oh sorry, I was thinking of Brian, not Bouncing Rick...
Rick is cool but not THAT cool, agree.
It's not that I dislike "Brian" or "Hot Fish" or the covers. Each has its own appeal.
I just made a playlist on Amazon Music to hear how it sounds without them and it did what I expected... Sounds much like The Maggot or a Senile Animal... Pure rocking goodness throughout. You could hand this EP off to a friend who has never heard of The Melvins and be confident it's a home run. You won't have to explain away anything.
"Hot Fish" is a fine song, just repetitive. The lyrics are probably the biggest detractor.
"Bouncing Rick" is dope. I don't know what you all are not feeling.
I didn't like a single song on it.
Oh well.
Maybe try skateboarding instead.

I didn't think there would be a legitimate Melvins fan who didn't at least like Caddy Daddy, Negative No No, Boy Mike and Hund. I guess i was wrong!
Funny stuff

wow, that was surprising. what's the problem, recycled riffs?
I want a WWG CD with an "explicit" sticker on it. Where should I find one? Where would still try and religiously sanitise music? I'm guessing North Carolina still........is Tipper still active?

The Maine one, then? I'm an ignorant foreigner, but the one in OR looked like the last bar before Hell when I was there. In a good way.

They burned down the bar last summer.
Portland, Maine, is nice. Some good breweries, plus lobstah rolls stacked up to your nipples.

Just find it ironic Buzz always bagged out Rolling Stones for going on too long...
Melvins had a nice run from 1983-2006 IMO with a few highlights every now and then thereafter.
Maybe they can do a Bowie, come out with a "Blackstar" one day .
(Don't care what the sycophants have to say, been listening to Melvins for decades - just my opinion! )
I too am a long time fan, but also believe they are just releasing everything recorded as they know it will sell. I also remember Buzz doing a review on his favourite releases from the Melvins and when he said Eggnog, spoke of his fascination for this short EP format, but the record companies don't like them. This is what Working with God should have been. Even someone here (sorry don't recall who) said this and made an abridged version. I also agree with that edit. Just do the short format you like. I get the joke stuff happens, but that's soundcheck shit. Wagyu brisket still has some fat to trim.
Hot Fish also doesn't belong here, tbh.
It was with Flipper on that EP. That's where it belonged.
I could then live with the other stuff. Or just release the amrep/joke recordings like they did the singles 1-12. A double CD thingy at the end of each year with all the amrep eps/singles plus outtakes studio mess arounds. Keep the "releases" tight
although i enjoy this album, i can see what you guys mean. sometimes (especially after the Big Biz era of the band) i have the feeling Melvins releases have more to do with a collection of songs than with a proper cohesive album. probably the fact that they have their own studio and they can record whatever they want at every time doesn't help. it seems they have stuff recorded in different sessions and they assemble them together. anyway, i still love them and must say this WWG album has some great songs on it

That does appear to be exactly how they are working now. I remember them saying 'Everybody Loves Sausages' and 'Basses Loaded' were both made from material they had that wasn't recorded specifically for an intended album.
I don't think having your own studio at your disposal or making an album/release up from multiple sessions is a disadvantage or problem. It's more deciding what actually is fit for what purpose. I mean back in the day bands knew what was a b-side or an outtake. Hell sometimes they even got it wrong. If anything being able to record the full track rather than putting it to a boom box recording for it later to be demoed could also be more hassle. Just set out a track list, then cut the low points out. Everything needs the right flow, even if it means what you think is a strong track. Maybe it stands on its own as a single.
I do think there is a flow.
It's a kind of "back to the future" concept, with retro stuff introducing the whole thing and then the two other covers that respond to this introduction, in a very sarcastic and mean way. And in between you've got some strange retro-sci-fi thrash-rock. This is coherent!
And well you know an album can also just be a collection of songs, that doesn't annoy me. If the songs are good... and here they do are good.
CQFD !
Here is my (triple) review:
https://www.coreandco.fr/chroniques/melvins-working-with-god-melvins-1983-8300.html
Working with your French.
Be brave.
You're wrong about "Jerkin Krokus," but great write-ups!
Don't remember, is "Jerkin Krokus" actually "Matt The Lurker" :)? Not sure...
Thanks!
Do you speak/read French or do you "google-translate"?
Jerkin Krokus is the Mott the Hopple song. Not sure if you heard it. Yes, it's a seventies rock song. But it's got full bellied Buzz hollering through distortion. It's got the lyrics " I know what she wants, a judo hold on a black man's bones." It's got Kevin grinding on bass. It's got Dale with some signature fills and skips. It's got a hell of a long pregnant pause before an evil whisper Buzz returns and says "man" in two syllables like "may-un." Then after just over two minutes it goes into a gnarly instrumental breakdown that's only vaguely hinted in the original song I think, pure Melvins.
https://youtu.be/4ZqPiJr1OFY
And yes, there's probably something lost to me I Google translation.
Ah sorry, it's the song tittle! I didn't wrote the tracklist in the review 'cause it was supposed to be the "Working With God" review, not the "Hostile Ambient Besides" one, eheheh!
Of course did I've heard it! I'm not writing reviews on stuff I didn't hear! :? Muahahahahaah!
Well and you know, I don't have the songs title on my "cheap CD" edition of this "Hostile Ambient Besides". Weird but there is NO tracklisting. Absurd.
Sorry I forgot about this, so stupid am I
Oh well... Great song as you say and great cover.
Ah I saw you wrote "you're wrong about..." it was written "you're worth about" before (well it seemed to me...) so I didn't understand.
What is wrong about what I wrote?
I don't know if you understood but I wrote that the Alice Cooper AND The Mott The Hoople covers were both GREAT. "Terrible" is a positive thing here in French and in this context.
Aha there it is. That's something that didn't translate. And I had to go back and edit the autocorrect.
Cheers, then. I agree with everything you wrote.
Agree, then. I cheer with everything you wrote.

i thought this interview was new but i'm not sure
I thought 'Working with God' was alright. Not great but not bad either. If you trimmed the shitty joke songs it would make a cracker of an EP though, perhaps there's something in that. Songs I liked were Negative No No, Caddy Daddy, The Great Good Place.
An average Melvins album is better than most band's albums though!

Just read it, yes it seems it's old but just published now. The article itself even says he was speaking over the phone to Revolver in Nov 2020. So it's probably quite old. These lines make me feel happy!
"That gave me the courage to continue doing what I'm doing. And I'm never gonna stop."
"Why do I do it? Because I love it. I'm determined to continue to do it as long as I can do it."
