i'm saying as compared to say skweetis, which is my all-time favorite drum sound ever.  i'm sure toshi did use rooms as it is essential for a big drum sound, but on hat dale's drums seem to be less roomy than on previous records.  that just means even more mics which makes 8 tracks more impressive.  and the drums are most definitely mic'd up seperately.  the toms and snare are so crisp that overheads and rooms just couldn't pick that up by themselves.  also his hi hat work is so clear that it had to be mic'd too.

Well comparing Skweetis and any H.A.T song you would notice that on H.A.T, the drums are in a much smaller room, therefor the smaller and more compact sound but it's still the room mics that are working their asses off on this recording.It's not wether or not to use the room sound but what type of room you are using. Toms and snares and hihat can be that crisp with overheads I do it all the time and just adding an ambience mic (and I'm certain if they close mic'd everything, it's just to balance the roomsound slightly).
I'm surpriced we see this drum recording so differently.

Klump, I'd start with a pair of overheads positioned xy over the drummers head and an ambience mic and a kick mic placed at the hole.
Worry about close mic'ing if you find the sound to be too thin.
Will you be using an engineer or are you doing this on your own?

that's why i love the art of recording.  it's all so subjective.  
i agree that it's a smaller room and therefore less "bigness" to the sound.  buzz said in that same interview that hook is a small studio.  also dale is using his gretsch kit on the album (i think) and they lend a completely different sound to the record.
after starting this thread i sat down and listened to hat with a pair of trusty headphones and there is roominess to it, though a bit understated to these ears.

the choice and use of fx over buzzs voice in the fool the meddling idiot are nothing short of genius,  the way it "sucks in" on the pre in every line in the first verse sounds so dramatic,

im surprised the whole album was produced soley (souly) on an 8trak

Just wondering what fellow Melvins fans think of this album. I absolutely love it. They were on fire on the tour, I'm really glad I got to see Kevin Rutmanis play live. He was a madman live.

It'd be cool for them to do more songs like "anti - vermin seed". That song is so fucking good. they've done long, weird songs here and there for some time though. The first to come to my mind would be spread eagle beagle off of houdini, which actually has Kurt Cobain playing some percussion.

     I feel ya blip. Some of the older stuff just can't be matched. I still love Ipecac era Melvins though. Pigs of the Roman Empire is not as good as H.A.T. imo. But the title track can stand up to H.A.T for sure. It sounds like it couldv'e been on H.A.T. Great stuff.
