"members of the audience were lying on the ground, covering their ears during this performance."
Thanks for the heads up on the spelling.  Yeah that's the one.  Certainly not the Melvins' pinnacle, but a fine example of their diversity.  Because the Melvins have such a vast back catalog it's impossible to pick one album as THE pinnacle, and if you ask on the board here you'll get thirty different answers as to what their best album is.  They're ALL fucking brilliant though.  I'll have to check out some more Down and see if I'm down.  I admittedly haven't heard a lot of their music, but none of it has compelled me to go and seek out their other material either.  Bottom line is everyone has different tastes.  It'll certainly be interesting to see each band's fans reaction to the other band at the shows.

I assume you mean "Colossus of Destiny", which I've personally never heard of.

"members of the audience were lying on the ground, covering their ears during this performance."

If that is supposedly their musical peak, I think I'll pass. Compared to NOLA, arguably the most well respected stoner/doom/sludge album of all time, I know where I stand.

Down are probably alot more diverse than you expect, it isn't all Bury Me In Smoke. They've got light, acoustic tracks, instrumentals, bouncy crowd moving tracks, 9 minute progressing epics.

At the end of the day, one band is headlinging stages at festivals whilst the other is struggling to keep playing. Neither of them are more 'commercially acceptable'. Make your own decisions as to what that means. I know it definitely means Melvins will be supporting for one.

"stoner/doom/sludge album of all time, I know where I stand. "

Not even close.Try 'Lysol'......or any Earth,SunnO, Electric Wizard,Acid King......any John Denver album,Devo,Wham, Big Country....they would all come before any Down album.

That was a more civilised response.

After all that, you've barely even listened to the band? They've only had 3 records out in 15 years, in which time Melvins have put out 11. Despite this Down are experiencing considerable more success. I'd put that to Down producing higher quality albums personally...

That's all obviously to do with personal tastes, but I can't see what the huffuffle is all about, Down's planned support bands were Hank III (countrypunk), Evil Army (old school thrash) and Acid King (super doomy stoner metal), which I'd consider a much more varied choice than Melvins. It sounds like they've had odd support bands in the past themselves.

The blind phanboi pops his head in again.

Note the part where I said it was down to personal preference, and even explained my reasoning?

I wont be waiting on you to do anything as simple.

That's your opinion, but I think the reality of it is that they've put out 3 much more mainstream albums than the Melvins have ever produced.  There isn't a single Melvins album that doesn't have some weird shit on it, and that turns a lot of people off.  It's also what draws many of us to them.  Part of the deal with the Melvins/Buzz is trying to do something new all the time and throwing their fans curve balls.  That makes it difficult to have any kind of mainstream success, even within a subset of music listeners such as metal fans.  Hey some people think Pearl Jam is a great band.  Go figure.

Fair enough. On the albums I've got (Bullhead & Stoner Witch) I thought it was relatively...regular really.

Neither band have benefited from commercial recognition (TV/radio play)

Remember that Down are producing these albums as a SIDE-PROJECT, in their 'down' time. They don't have time to fuck around with experimental tracks, when the album/tour is done they've got to go back and write awesome CoC, Crowbar, EHG etc albums.

Down should be the MELVINS roadies & be thankful that they are in the same room together.

One of the best cover bands I ever heard was the KISS roadie band. KISS did a decent cover of the Stones'
"The Last Time" in soundcheck.
I'd rather be at Dodger Stadium...

What are the chances that Down practices in the same practice space in LA as the MELVINS?
