I guess you can be anything you want on the internet
right? Especially when you have no intention of ever
substantiating your claims with any actual proof.

driving you nuts is much more fun than actually (and easily) proving that what i say is true. i'd rather watch you freak out than validate my claims for you. it's wayyyy more entertaining. that i am sure of.

truth is, i could be a harvard scholar with 500 platinum albums or a junior-high dropout without even a 7-inch single to my name, and it wouldn't matter, because you'd still be a pud.

Now, I normally just lurk, but...um..."moorst," from the way you are writing, you sound like a first year college student flaunting all of your brand new knowledge in order to attempt to prove the extent of your intellect..  That may or may not be the case, but either way, it's the image you are projecting.  Throwing out pseudophilosophical jargon makes your argument come off as trite and childish.

And please, don't take literacy theory as the be-all, end-all of language discussions - literary theorists wouldn't even agree to that.  If you want to try another approach, get into rigorous discussions of linguistic meaning by reading Russell or Wittgenstein.  And don't even throw the "take a class" thing at me.  I have.  Many of them.

And for the record, I think Pigs is a pretty nifty album.

Outside of possible community classes and seminars, literary theory classes usually can't be taken until your junior year. Because you need the pre-requisites. I've been to two universities, and that was the case for both. So if that's the way I "sound", I apologize. Much of what I have written on this thread has been written in haste.

But what you're saying appears to be this: it's fine to be a belligerent asshole in expressing your opinion on the Melvins, but as soon as you use words, code and theory that are a little unfamiliar... words that only a PhD or an acclaimed theorist should use... then that's a party foul. Shame on you for offering something different. Your opinion is automatically useless. Am I reading you right? Is that what it takes to get you to actually interact on this thing? All the abuse and idiocy is just fine, but when someone comes along and uses words and terminology that you deem useless, automatically I'm some kind of elitist?

Quote from: captainhappyAnd please, don't take literacy theory as the be-all, end-all of language discussions - literary theorists wouldn't even agree to that.

Agreed. Linguistics is the cutting edge, and there is still an entire universe to be explored on that front. RIP Jacques Derrida. But it was never my point to suggest that literary theory was any such thing. You've been lurking, so I can only assume you've read the whole thread. Please read my bullshit (hint hint) in its context. Don't just enter the fray just to match ego's with me or Tony. It looks like you're joining in just to enter the pissing match.

You obviously think I'm just a mean blowhard. That's fine, I guess, but where was your lancelot routine when Tony was telling Pachan that he shouldn't even post here because of what he considered a lesser form of fandom? Am I the only one here that considers that mean and dumb and abusive? To me that just seems like all anyone cares about around here is being right at the expense of others. Sounds like a fucking inquisition.

Agreed. I even think it rocks.

Partially, but not quite.  People can say whatever they want in regard to the Melvins, because that is just emoting.  In the end, it's inconsequential.  When you start coming off like a pretentious intellectual, taking your side as fact and dismissing counterarguments because the opposition hasn't taken classes, you're giving a bad name to all academics.

Yes, you do seem like an elitist, because you are using esoteric terms and essentially waving them over others' heads.  I do not think that the terminology is useless, but if you're going to use it, try to not be so presumptuous.  Don't assume everyone knows what you're talking about and dismiss them when they don't, and don't take your sides as fact.

I can see why you're saying that, but no, that's not what I'm doing.  I identify with academia a lot more than I do with the Melvins, so when I saw someone representing it in an irresponsible manner (especially the humanities, which already come under more than enough fire) I felt like stepping in.  Call it a slight.

See above.

Now, if I came off a bit harsh initially, my apologies.  Perhaps it was a knee-jerk reaction since it hit a nerve.  You seem like a bright fellow, so unless it's to further feel each other out philosophically and discuss something interesting, let's not keep this going.

Captainhappy, I understand and agree with you. I was being pretentious. I don't know if I can agree with you that such abuse (tony's emoting) is inconsequential, though. What if Sachan decided not to post here anymore after Tony's attack on his sense of fanship? I doubt that would happen, but we don't really know each other. If he did leave, should we just conclude that he's just a pussy, and move on? Should we bow to Tony's sense of fanship in this manner?

Ultimately, I'm just blowing smoke in Tony's face. I'm not trying to give acedemia a bad name, so I apologize if that's how I came across. The "take a class" comment was in response to his suggesting that my whole argument was nonsensical, when it infact comes from scholars.
I think his reaction has been entertaining. But I seriously think his abuse gives Melvins fans a bad name.

who the fuck is sachan? i'm not rereading this thread to find out.

and how long ago was this, anyway? a month? don't be such a dink. quit digging up old arguments. everybody knows that this is ONLY about you not liking the fact that i called you out on the carpet over your, um, creative use of the word "rocks." that's it.

bottom line, i hurt your widdle feewings.

look, you've already admitted to being pretentious. now can you just admit you're boring, too, and stop posting your drivel?

by the way, thanks for saying my reactions were "entertaining," dick. i wish yours were. yours were like being forced to sit there and read the words of some jerkoff who thinks that bringing up literary theory and lecturing poorly about subjects he obviously doesn't fully understand on a fucking MELVINS MESSAGE BOARD is a good idea.

er, wait, that's what we WERE all forced to endure.

well, i'd better run. i'm in the middle of listening to a barbra streisand album. she rocks so hard.

i thought "melvins fan" was a bad name.  plus this literal literary literacy is giving me a headache.  i think i'll read war and peace to calm down. :D
