QuoteThe universe, and how it is experienced, is up for grabs. Just because Tony is conforming to a specific program that opiates his ideology does not mean that I have to accept his definition of the universe. Especially if that universe relies upon a beligerent dogma that I don't accept.

my god, you so fucking farted on that one.

hey, buddy -- words mean what they mean for a reason. you can't just suddenly start defining words in your own way and then defending that behavior with quasi-philosophical bullshit about universes and dogmas and conformity. you're using the word "rocks" wrong. that's all. that's it. you can't bullshit your way out of it.

by your logic, any word could mean anything to any person, and that would cause the breakdown of every system of communication known to man. this is not a good idea. words mean what they mean for a reason. stop being an asshole.

quiet little tunes don't "rock" any more than rap songs "jazz." end of discussion.

hey, buddy --

Is that some kind of tough guy talk? To call me "buddy"? Cuz we're not buddies, y'know. We never will be. Yet you're using that word, "buddy" in a way it was never meant to be used when it was created. You're using it to show me that you're tough... to show me that you're a man. Are you making up that meaning...? With your usage of that word, "buddy"? Is there a hint of threat in that usage? Cause I think anyone reading can tell that we're not going to go out for beers and shoot the shit about monday night football.

Quote from: tonyyou're using the word "rocks" wrong. that's all. that's it. you can't bullshit your way out of it.

I think Dudbean just proved your ass wrong. Does that count as a fart?

Quote from: tonywords mean what they mean for a reason.

What reason is that? Really, give me something of substance, buddy. Dash my theoretical house of cards into nothing with something REAL. I'm all ears.

Quote from: tonyby your logic, any word could mean anything to any person, and that would cause the breakdown of every system of communication known to man. this is not a good idea. words mean what they mean for a reason. stop being an asshole.

Why would anyone be an asshole to you, toni? Your own usage of words, tropes, and symbols relies on multiple meanings. You just displayed how "buddy" can mean something that is the OPPOSITE of its definition on the dictionary. Is society unraveling as a result? Maybe.

Quote from: tonyquiet little tunes don't "rock" any more than rap songs "jazz." end of discussion.

Some rap songs are "jazzy". Ever listened to some of the production work done by Mad Lib? But that's beside the point. The fact is that once someone on the cutting edge decides to alter a word's usage, it filters into the mainstream. Fo shizle, my nizzle. Even the word "nigger" has been re-appropriated by black culture to change it's meaning. "Queer" is now used as an accepted signifier of homosexuality in the media, not just as a derrogatory term. "Queer", as a word, originally had nothing to do with homosexuality. But times change, toni, don't they? And with them change the meanings of words. You can't stop it.

If you're stuck in the '50s, then I guess you're head's in the sand, and you're experiencing the universe in a way that I'm not experiencing it, and in a way I'm not interested in. Which, consequently, is going to color my appreciation of your opinion on the Melvins and their new album.

buddy,

your arguments are so ridiculous as to be almost completely nonsensical. you're grasping at straws just to justify your actions. yes, the meanings of words sometimes change. but this happens when a lot of people at once decide on it, not just one lone douche such as yourself.

for instance, the word "douche." used to refer to just the feminine hygiene device. now it also refers to a person who is being a stupid idiot.

i don't really feel like going any further with this. if you want to take that to mean that you "won," go ahead.

i'm going to go eat some ball bearings. oh, that's my term for "ice cream," by the way.

I gotta say this line is rather amusing.

ugh who the hell recorded this? it sounds like it was done with ONE 10 dollar microphone into "my first sound recorder" program. the switch to digital recording hurts my ears.

oh yeah the songs are horrible compared to H.A.T.   seriously disapointed :(

Quote from: tonybuddy,

You did it again, but now it doesn't carry nearly enough irony. Why is that, toni? What happened to all your authority?

Quote from: tonyyour arguments are so ridiculous as to be almost completely nonsensical.

It's called "literary theory". Take a class. Get those nurons firing on something other than your ego for once.

Quote from: tonyyes, the meanings of words sometimes change. but this happens when a lot of people at once decide on it, not just one lone douche such as yourself.

A lot of people have "decided" (Wha...? Was there some sort of concensus when the new dictionaries were written? No one told me.) that "rocks" can be used to say that something is cool, or that it rules. Both of those words, as you may have noticed, also carry multiple meanings. Your usage of "fart" a few posts back, however, is completely nonsensical. Did a lot of people decide on that, too? Or was it just you? Who's the douche???

Quote from: tonyi don't really feel like going any further with this. if you want to take that to mean that you "won," go ahead.

I don't NEED to win, buddy. You proved yourself to be a jerk before I even read this thread, which automatically makes you a loser. I just wanted to offer you and your myopic ideology something that you've obviously never seen before. Happy Birthday. Maybe some day you'll stop being a jerk.

But don't misunderstand me, Tony. Though language is limited in expressing many things, I still feel that it's a valuable, essential tool. But it also alienates, colonizes, violates and terrorizes. That's why art is so valuable to culture: it expresses concepts that language can only point towards. The Melvins, and their art, certainly provide that phenomena for us. Hence this message board. It'd be nice if someone could say that POTRE rocks around here and not have shit thrown in their face for it, just because someone wants to fucking WIN.

seriously, though, buddy, i don't feel like arguing with you about this any more. it's clear that nothing i say will change your mind, so it would be an utter waste of my time to even bother after this. it'd be like arguing with george w. bush or something. if i wanted to battle a stubborn mule, i'd go to a zoo.

i will say, though, for someone who is such a proponent of "literary theory," you sure spell ("neuron" and "consensus") like a person currently in the middle of fifth grade. you can't even get the spelling of my name right, for chrissakes, and all you'd have to do is look at the posts you're responding to to get it. although i suspect you're trying to feminize my name by adding the "i" at the end, and everybody knows how very mature it is to try and challenge one's masculinity in an argument. countdown to the use of the word "fag": one post.

p.s. - i've been in college for a few years, so spare me your condescending "take a class" shit. actually, spare me all your condescending shit.

p.p.s. - i wonder if "loser" and "jerk" are good words to describe a person who can't admit that perhaps they're using a word in a confusing way and tries to cover their ass by giving people impromptu language and art history lessons. nah, i guess "asshole" works just fine. i'll stick to that.
