I suppose I'm voicing an unpopular opinion here, but I feel like this album, though by no means "bad" in any way at all, is mostly unnoteworthy. A couple of gnarly riffs, but mostly the continuation of this sorta circusy quality that Melvins albums have smacked of for a little while now. I suppose I'm waiting for them to drop an album heavy as a brick shithouse, and my expectations are getting in the way. With that bias aside, I still feel like this album is, at best, mediocre Melvins.

But, then again, I've never really been partial to the studio albums at all--and I imagine a handful of these songs would kill live.

Yeah, I was kind of hoping for a more experimental sound, given the lineup. It's grown on me, though.

I've seen this comment a few times and I don't really get it.  The Butthole Surfers have been pretty poppy since Independent Worm Saloon, arguably since Hairway to Steven, and before that they still wrote pop songs in between the weirdness.  You Can Make Me Wait, Eyes On You, and I Get Along sound like the exact type of song I'd expect to hear on a new Butthole Surfers record.

They're not pissed off teenagers anymore. I'm sure that Sesame Street Meat and the one with God in its tittle from BSM is as "traditional" Melvin's as we'll hear and I don't blame them. I contribute a fair bit of their longitivity to never retreading ground and always trying something new, even if it doesn't work occasionally.

Having said that I hear you, call me any label but it would be fun to hear a Lysol or Houdini again, as it would also be fun to hear a bootlicker or honky again, or in this case - hold it in which is a blast!

I guess my question would be if you came across these songs, and a lot of the other recent era songs,  randomly on the radio(or spotify, or whatever people listen to music on these days) not knowing it was the melvins would you still like them, let alone think they are great? I think the above comment about not being pissed off anymore is dead on. But good for them they are still making music and seem to be more popular than ever. And before I get shit on for having an opinion, yes I'm aware they can do whatever they want to, no I haven't released any records myself, and yes I do have more important things going on in my life to worry about than what kind of songs the melvins are writing. I have no reason to believe I wouldn't like the songs.  I always try to give bands, songs, artist, albums, etc at least 3 listens before I totally make up my mind about something.  I've been listening to a lot of Oingo Boingo lately and I didn't really have much of a reason to check them out.  They certainly aren't talked about on the forums I read.  It's good stuff regardless of who wrote it.

Of course if an artist has credibility I'm probably willing to give it more than three chances.  Devo has made some brilliant albums so I've probably listened to Shout about 15 times expecting to finally like it or get some enjoyment out of it.  It's still a huge, embarrassing piece of shit.

Also, I never shit on anyone's opinion.  I'm just surprised that people forgot that the Butthole Surfers have always wrote poppy songs.  Did people forget that Hey, Creep in the Cellar, Negro Observer, BBQ Pope, and so on exist?  Most of their albums really weren't much like LAT.  Hold It In sounds about like what I'd expect the Melvins to do with Paul Leary and Pinkus.  Not sure why more people didn't see it coming.

I hope you know I wasn't calling you out personally to defend your opinion or accuse you of shitting on others opinions. I was genuinely asking a question, directed to no one in particular, that I have asked myself.

No disrespect, but I don't think listening 3 times before passing judgement is adequate time. There are plenty of albums/songs out there that you could listen to hundreds of times and possibly still not get it. This could also explain your change in taste for Oingo Boingo. You yourself has changed, so now you get it. I personally listen to stuff now, that some 20 years ago snuffed at. I even hated Lysol. Thought it was a drawn out mess and a half assed attempt to play some cover songs. Then something one day clicked. It all made sense. Trust me, just put it aside and come back to it. It will call you when its ready. Then it might just make sense.
