I hear the complaints, but it's not nearly as bad as the top musical crime of the 20th century (in terms of recording).

Burying Dale's drums in the Maggot!

I always thought that was one of the things that made the Maggot so great.
It was a smart change in dynamic that came at a good time. Within the context of the Trilogy, it makes total sense to me that the abrasive part of the three would be ridiculously mixed, and the upfront guitars really add to the rawness. I mean that extra guitar track that comes in at the very end of amazon just to make it even angrier?

Like Eggnog on steroids.

Don't get me wrong the guitars are super abrasive, but I just personally don't see the point of having one of the best rock drummers in music and not being able to hear him.
Or maybe I just have Stoner Witch engraved in my brain so deep that I think every record should sound that well recorded and mixed!

Its not worth the hassle of Tape, no one has the know-how or money for that kind of thing in this day and age, well as far as I can tell anyway..I Just have troubles of my own with Computers not being as hands on and that refines my creative drive somehow and restrains me a bit from using my head and hands to physically Render something on a machine Ive restored or keep running less a laptop with a crashing harddrive...I find chewed tapes are ok, nevermind tho...one is not better than the other..

Analog was at its pinnacle in around the mid 90s, then the wave broke upon the rock.

Stag and Stoner Witch production is the best Melvins ever had. impossible to compare with their current recordings

guys like Joe and Gggarth...and especially when they had Alex Newport as production assistant on Stag. 

Then Stag took a nose dive into the black pit and the dark sludge That spewed industrial putrifaction from its morbid hole will once and shall always be my favourite album of all time; HONKY.


oh, and my *yardstick* for my Car stereo seems to be HAG ME for some reason.

Yes, very much so. He's a bit anonymous on Hold It In, but that's how it should be for this kind of record.

The way I see it - The Trilogy is a resume or some sort of retrospective look at themselves.
Obviously heavy/sludge/doom (maggot), weird/soft/ambient (bootlicker) and of course experimental/electronic/noise/all of the above (crybaby). Basically they were showing all their cards at once up to that point.

I think that since the heavy sound of Melvins has always relied on Dale's drums being ridiculously massive, offbeat and primitive sounding - it was just a shame that with Maggot (being a nod to their heavy side), those drums were basically hidden except for the cool noise in Amazon.

Since Hold It In is a pop record (in the most demented way possible), the drums can afford to be in the background just to keep time and they don't need to be at forefront.

Although during Horseshoe, his old style made a return though and the drums were appropriately mixed to sound massive again!

album first and then dale came in afterwards and added the drums to what
was already recorded - maybe thats why he was so low in the maggot mix.

Anyone else get a defective copy from Amazon? Fucking Ipecac must be using a cheaper pressing plant. Never in 15 yrs have I had a fucked CD from Ipecac. Two seconds in and it locks up/freezes, yet the CD looks spotless front and back. No it's not my CD player. Fucking unreal.

Funny thing, you know? I've played the album several times on my very VERY OLD Technics portable CD player without any problem, but when I played the first track on my not so old Panasonic stereo system I noticed a problem, not a freeze but a series of "jumps" throughout the first 15 seconds, which is very weird considering that the inner ring of "This Machine Kills Artists" CD looks exactly like this one and it plays fine.

my copy locks up too. but i thought it was my stereo since when i listen to the album on my pc i don't have any problem
