They've played at least one show with each bassist (Jared, Trevor, Pinkus) in the last 7 months.  :shock:

Wow. I didn't really put that together until now. That's pretty impressive!

Plus, if you go from the end of the Hold It In tour, last fall;
Nov - Pinkus
Dec - Dunn
Feb - Warren

All in 4 months!  :shock:

I realize it's not exactly the same thing but when Gov't Mule's original bass player died, instead of replacing him right away they recorded two albums with a different bass player on each track. Entwistle, Squire, Flea, Watt, Claypool, Bootsy and a bunch of others. Then, for the tours, they brought out two or three guys and each did a set and if any of the guests from the records lived near where they were playing they'd usually sit in. I think the tour lasted a year or two before they settled on a permanent guy. There's a doc on YouTube about the sessions which is worth watching just to hear Watt explain how he does wrestling moves on bass and how he wishes his hand was a flipper.

Pinkus is like the fifth leg of a Melvins equilateral triangle.

Honestly, I love all the different Melvins line ups and how it gives them a sort of different sound. I'm excited to see Pinkus this summer.

That being said, if I did have to pick a favorite, I'd have to go with Big Melvins. Two drums, two vocalists... just an amazing show. You'd think that Dale would somehow get washed out a little with two drummers, but it never seemed to me that way. He seems just as potent and in focus with four people as three.

I think right now i want to see the band stick with Pinkus. I've always enjoyed the BB guys being involved but i'd rather see them be more active on their own. Two bands of interest operating at the same time is better than one! I will say i've never quite fully got into Jared's vocals with Melvins. A little too prominent for me so that's a big reason why i would prefer someone else. Someone who will take more of a backseat vocally. Coady is a fantastic drummer of course but i do think i prefer to see Dale alone. Ultimately it's cool in a way to move on. I like what BB did with the band but as with all the eras, i think that had it's moment and the next phase is now underway.
