Glen: Wouldn`t you say asa is  even more radio-friendly than anything they ever did on atlantic?

well said.    why is that (IMO)?     that would be the influence of Big Business.   like Buzz said recently (loosely quoted):

"if we've got the vocal abilities (jared) why not use them?"  as an example.

I think Buzz's intention is to be efficient and productive and use the tools set before him.    Big Business is, like I said, ROCK.
half of MELVINS is Big Business so now you got at least 50% rock.  well lets say 35% since Buzz writes the songs.

its a matter of maturity and experience though, to me.   this coming from a grizzled 34 year old and former dumb punk kid.

you get to a point in life, which I believe Buzz and Dale hit awhile back, where you start NOT doing things for shock factor and start doing things because you believe in them.  efficiency and productivity become much higher on your list of priorities.   you start trying to make "smart" decisions.   I think this theory is what guides MELVINS these days.
Buzz doesn't give a fuck about "scenes" or "controversy" anymore.  he's more concerned with, like I said "efficiency and productivity".

its tough to explain.  but do you get what I'm trying to say?    its about being a "grown-up", right schnabster?  :D

what the hell does this have to do with (A)SA being radio-friendly?    it all goes back to the fact that Buzz and Dale are making decisions solely from their own knowledge, experience, desires, etc.    NOT from a "lets rattle cages" stand point.
in other words... if Joe Preston would have rejoined MELVINS (A)SA would most likely be more like Thrones, low-end and more experimental.  why? because that is the most logical song writing approach incorporating the tools at hand.

now lets review:   when MELVINS recorded HOUDINI and it was somewhat radio-friendly it was because a major label had a new potential cash cow during a time when the "seattle" scene was exploding.  of course there was some head-butting between the artists (MELVINS) who were looking to record THEIR music,  and the corporation (atlantic) who was looking to take advantage of a rapidly growing form of music (grunge).     the label found ways to influence the situation (ie sneaking Kurt Cobain, the BIG name, in the mix).   as time went on (stoner witch, stag) the label realized they were overmatched with a band as hard-headed as MELVINS.

when MELVINS recorded (A) Senile Animal and it was somewhat radio-friendly it was because it was SOLELY what MELVINS wanted to create.  the only influence was the artists themselves (that being Big Biz joining the group).  there was no other ulterior motive involved anywhere.

whats this got do with Honky?  Honky was the ultimate release of what MELVINS had been holding onto over the previous few years.   Am Rep said "do ANYTHING you want. we're just happy to have you here."    Atlantic most-likely never said that.

Honky is the last album where the Melvins tried to do as many different things as possible rather than focusing on one idea and exploring its different aspects over the course of an album. I'm not saying either approach is better, I'm just saying.

Hey people, A rare post from Octane.... Long time listener, first time caller.

Just re discovered honkey recently. DAMN . Got to say it, Mombius Hibachi is a top ten all time Melvins song. Slaughtered....... GENIUS (pure genius) Buzzo, Dale and MarkD at their best. More to come from 'ol Nick on this board people. I'm a huge fan who feels that now's the the time to unite with my fellow fans of the greatest band of at least the last 200-325 years.  Jesus H. Chrimmeny people. I don't think I've ever been excited about any release ever, EVER, than the up coming Nude with boots..... I believe that this line up has more potential than any line up the Melvins have ever brought .

(the) Razor

It's "Honky". But yes, I agree - it's a great album. So much so for me it's just behind The Bootlicker as my favourite Melvins album.

Honky is a great album. It provides the blue print of a few styles they would later explore further on The Maggot and The Bootlicker.

black stallion

one of the albums that has changed my life!
think the band was really "into" Pink Floyd at the time.
more obscure than the previous Stag, if i remember correctly it was recorded less than a week.they don't really love it, don't know why.
anyway, i have always thought to Mark Deutrom as the most influent third piece in the band, even if i prefer Kevin as bass player.
hope nobody will kill me for this opinion   :)
