I think this example says more about their approach back then, than how they approached the revisited Houdini.

to me the fact that the Gluttony & Lust version goes back to the original intro, in fact even more-so noisey and drawn out, only supports my theory.

ie: Buzz has reached a plateau known as "I'm going to do whatever the hell I want" and this is his official presented version.
NOT the more brief version from Houdini.  therefore, I assume he prefers the long bass intro version.

if the amount of conversation the subject of Honky has sparked isn't testament to its legacy......
take back what you said bUTTHOLEmAN!  :D
No way Ana!!

Well you can take these facts and use them to back up your previously stated theory, or you could simply look at it as a recorded version versus a live version, or as two completely different versions simply because there was more than ten years between the two. I'm pretty sure that even when they were on Atlantic, they did whatever the fuck they wanted to do.

Do that. Remember, try to listen to it as the blueprint of the trilogy albums.

I agree 100% with Glen on this one. Although Buzz and Dale are very noncomform, I`m pretty sure they tried to give something back to a company who could make them rich. Good then, to see that the art was victorious at the end. NB! But the Atlantic-records were still masterpieces, in their own way.

Sorry I couldn't help myself.

Honky's a good album. I could do without How though.

Yeah, usually when someone says it, and I agree with that person, that's quite mediocre, and all the girls go, 'wow, norecess!', and I say 'that's cool'.

Glen: Wouldn`t you say asa is  even more radio-friendly than anything they ever did on atlantic?

I have brought the great ball of crystal;
            Who can lift it?
Can you enter the great acorn of light?
But the beauty is not the madness
Tho' my errors and wrecks lie about me.
And I am not a demigod,
I cannot make it cohere.

"special packaging" was just a loose example.

I still say the fact that they were on a major label was influencing the music, even if slightly.

example: listen to the single version of Night Goat.  long, alienating bass intro.  now listen to the Houdini version.
                  short, more radio-friendly bass intro.

I'm sure they felt some power of suggestion from the guys who were writing the checks and wanting to see their investment pay off.  the fact that the hired pro-producers supports that in my mind.

the best thing MELVINS ever did was parting ways with atlantic records.
they barely have a bass intro live now these days. what does that say about them now. they're lazy?
Judy is mad.🤣

ASA is the most accessible Melvins-record ever, but I think that has mainly to with the fact that Big Business are a little closer to mainstream than Melvins. Jared and Cody has brought in their elements and combined with Buzz and Dales ideas you get the sound you have in ASA.

ASA is not very interesting to listen to on the cd-player time and time again, but live the songs fits perfect.
