no way is honky genius.  Honky is the experimental album, a testing of the experimental waters.  Honky makes Lily cry tears of sadness!

bUTTHOLE... I was just starting to like you,  don't blow it.

for your information Lily loves Honky.   she's especially fond of Laughing w/ Lucifer and the first part of Grin.
tears of sadness, no!  drools of joy!

"no way is Honky genious...."  why I oughta....    what the hell is this guy thinking?
wait till I tell Lily what you said,  she is going to be gravely dissapointed.

Honky allowed them to unleash their creative delusions. What makes Honky so genius is that it was Buzzo, Dale and Mark D (don't forget him, this guy shows us some fine soloing on In The Freaktose) who made this album possible.

but they didn't really butt(holeman) heads with atlantic. buzz has said they really did whatever they wanted.

This is totally off topic - But I watched High Fidelity last night, and spotted a Honky poster twice!  :D

Hey, that's more on-topic than half the shit posted in this thread.  :o
I imagine glen or I will be pruning most of the non-relevant posts
in this topic shortly.

hhhmmm.... listen to Laughing w/ Lucifer.   sounds to me like there was some disagreement.

"we don't do special packaging",  etc.  etc.

besides the fact that the music speaks for itself.  don't tell me the atlantic releases don't sound a little more radio-friendly than the am rep, ipecac, boner, C/Z records.    there had to be some big-brother influence there.

I've always held the atlantic years as my least favorite in MELVINS history.  not to say that there aren't some classic songs/albums there.    just speaking rank-wise.

I think making a record for a major label or a small indie label are two different things. I think with the albums for Atlantic they were really discovering how studios work. You can hear this especially on Stoner Witch I think, and needless to say Stag. Also, I think with three Atlantic albums, they were more going for 'albums', with 'proper' 'songs', as in HAT is more of an album than let's say CoD. Maybe that's the result of discovering the studio, using different sounds in different songs. So you get songs, instead of one big happy noisefest. So in that case maybe albums like GPT, Lysol and Eggnog were more the result of the 'at-the-time-state-of-being' of the Melvins, and are Stag and Honky more proof of what they were going for. Two different things. One has to do with who you are now, the other with who you want to be, present/future. Houdini is an exception, since it was recorded without a steady bassist, and - something that always plays a not to underestimate role - the personal mood, 'state of being', of the guys. I'm sure you guys remember that Mark D interview, posted here some time ago.

is special packaging really gonna change the music though? when was the last time the melvins did any special packaging on any of their main releases?

I don't know if you'd count it, but there was the special (A)SA that was sold on the last tour, which now goes for $200 + on E-Bay.  I sure wish I woulda picked one up when I had the chance.   :x

i wouldn't considering it was so few copies and being hand made and all.

"special packaging" was just a loose example.

I still say the fact that they were on a major label was influencing the music, even if slightly.

example: listen to the single version of Night Goat.  long, alienating bass intro.  now listen to the Houdini version.
                  short, more radio-friendly bass intro.

I'm sure they felt some power of suggestion from the guys who were writing the checks and wanting to see their investment pay off.  the fact that the hired pro-producers supports that in my mind.

the best thing MELVINS ever did was parting ways with atlantic records.

I think this example says more about their approach back then, than how they approached the revisited Houdini. Also, when you use the term 'radio friendly', you might mean more of a 'song', in the way I'm sure Buzzo appreaciates a good 'pop' song (David Bowie, The Beach Boys), and the recording possibilities a major label offers makes it more tempting and interesting to try that out.

to me the fact that the Gluttony & Lust version goes back to the original intro, in fact even more-so noisey and drawn out, only supports my theory.

ie: Buzz has reached a plateau known as "I'm going to do whatever the hell I want" and this is his official presented version.
NOT the more brief version from Houdini.  therefore, I assume he prefers the long bass intro version.

if the amount of conversation the subject of Honky has sparked isn't testament to its legacy......
take back what you said bUTTHOLEmAN!  :D
