i bought maggot at the gig last night. i have everything apart from trilogy 2 and 3, Prick and COD.

first listen off i'm not big time into it and it's going to have to grow on me i think. pretty glad it wasn't one of my first melvins albums...

i'm sure it'll rock though sooner than later because i remember when i got HAT i wasn't too impressed first time off either.

did it take anyone a fair amount of time to get into maggot?

Yes. There are still a couple of tracks on it that lead me to skip forward but it does grow and grow on you, and besides See How Pretty is just otherwordly in it's brilliance. Get Bootlicket next!

It took me no time to get into it. Please see the Maggot appreciation thread. This album crushes and is the heaviest album since Houdini. I think it will grow on you. The Maggot will consume your flesh.

Maggot definitely took a while to grow on me as did Honky, H.A.T. and Pigs of the Roman empire. I generally go for music that's not so instant. That way you appreciate it more. You always know when you buy a Melvins album that it's not going to consist of 3 minute verse chorus songs with catchy poppy melodies that wont leave your head. They're a complex, imaginative, experimental and interesting band.
Maggots not top of my list though. It serves its purpose as being the heavy album but I prefer Crybaby or H.A.T for variety. I haven't got Bootlicker or Colossus yet. Melvins fans are hard to please. They're constantly bitching cuz Melvins haven't made Houdini 20 times. I thought the idea of getting into Melvins is that you want music that's a little more surprising and left of centre.

What kind of cheap-ass dickwad actually spends the time to download albums in shitty mp3 quality rather than get the actual disc? And the people who put them up, fucking stupid. Put up live shows instead.

Calm down.  He wasn't doing it to try and screw anyone, he was doing it to turn more people on to the Melvins.  Most people there already own it anyway.  There would be a lot of bands that I wouldn't be into if it wasn't for file sharing, The Melvins included and now I've already bought about 10 of their albums.  File sharing is only helping them, not hurting them.

Yes, it has been awhile since someone posted on this thread. But what better Melvins album to crank up when you are in the mood for crushing music than The Maggot? Maybe Houdini a close second? Its my favorite of the trilogy.

i wouldn't say that the drums are recorded worse than hat, just because of the reason that it was most likely their choice to have it that way.  possibly this album is supposed to be more focused on the strings.
who the fuck knows.
but you are right that the drums aren't mic'ed up and recorded or whatever like the other instruments.
buzz's vocals have come out more through the years, kinda spotlighted.

and i thought they split the songs up because of downloading!
that's wild to hear that that's actually a rumor.
it's quite smart, yet i've checked and they do offer full versions of the song the horn bearer, not split up.

this is one of my favorite albums along with bullhead, houdini, and stag.
