Stag is a good mix of experimentation and rock. I like that recod alot. That being said I definately see the similarity between Stag and Hat. The thing with Hat though is it flows really well, it sounds like a full complete idea more than just a collection of songs. It's sounds fucking heavy live too. Why do people hate on on Houdini, is it because of it's  connection to Cobain ? That album is sooooo tight!

I love stag man. this one is my favorite, so I can recommend this to people who never listened to melvins. There are many different kind of songs, and they are all great!!!!Go to the odyssey

how can slipknot and meshuggah be compared, other than the fact they both have guitars and drums?  slipknot is more groove oriented and melodic and meshuggah is pure math metal(alot of industrial influence)

So I just laid hands on a copy of stag tonight. With the exception of Tipping the Lion, The Bit and Bar-x, most of what presented itself to me was new...and Yowza. Now immeadietly what came to mind was some of the harsh criticisms laid against this album and how I was reluctant to drop a bunch of dough on something that people were so divided on.
The fact of the matter is...this may very well be one of my favorite albums. There's a really bizarre sense of continuity to the whole thing, some of the tracks seem to blend into one another, particularly Captain Pungent and Berthas. I actually had to look up from the book that I was reading and check the CD player because I wasn't sure.
Things like the Bloat and Skin Horse are, I think, representative of a band that is ultimately fearless and content to do exactly as it please, regardless of being under the umbrella of a gigantic corporate pop-machine (i.e. Atlantic records).
I might even go as far as to say that Stag is, in fact a perfect representation of what the Melvins are all about...

Berthas you can hear their KISS influence so well in it... if you listen to berthas and then Detroit Rock City you can tell the similarities.
