Excellent. Haven't seen melvins since ... 2018? Haven't seen Boris since 2014-ish.
An interesting, cool tour partner! Although shouldn't it be Triplets Of Evil if Mr Phylzzz are on the bill too?? Does this mean we aren't getting a new Melvins record after all now? I fully expected something new to be announced with an American tour. speaking of tours, i'm slightly surprised this tour is announced under a different name. When Melvins announced the European tour i read that it said 40th Anniversary tour (Part 1)!!! So i guess there won't officially be a Part 2? Also since both Melvins and Boris will seemingly collaborate with literally anyone on an album, does this mean that a collaboration between the two shall eventually emerge!!?! Also
Notice that something got deleted?
Can't wait for the tour, oh and to xxx pls stop deleting/changing my posts. K thx
Holy Crap!!
Great lineup
and...
THEY ARE PLAYING ALBANY NY
A show I don't have to travel for.
(That never happens!)
Stoked to have Mr. Phlyzzz opening. Been dying to see them.
Cancel Culture Club was one of my favorite albums last year.
They look to be a smoking live band!
This is awesome. I might do both philly and bethlehem.

i love the Who! :D
:-" A tour that should have happened 15 yrs ago. It happens when bands run out of ideas, and a lack of new material worth playing
Fuckers, no Buffalo/Rochester. :x Man, Cleveland is real tempting. It's not @ their usual stop - The Grog Shop, which by now they've probably outgrown. The Beachland is an awesome, comfortable venue. Easy drive/parking. Do I really need to make a 6 hr round trip to see this?
By now I've seen Melvins perform every song from Bullhead, some songs of course several times. Boris orig Heavy Rocks done live? Yeah, one of their best works. At least they've read the room and know that no one wants to hear their new shit.
Roseland pdx I'm there mates
I wonder what the "+ more songs" will be. Something new and currently unheard or just a few other classics. How many other songs too of course! Heavy Rocks is almost an hour long so could we expect to see Melvins add another 25 minutes onto Bullhead's 35 runtime? Maybe Boris coming back on stage to join in with the song Boris too!

Strange they're touring Bullhead when they had recently teased something Ozma and then surprised released a new version of 6 Songs. 40 years of the unexpected

any details on the presale for Thursday? Presale code ? Bc we all know what happened with the Mr. bungle pre-sale. I'm still shocked that all those tickets sold through during that pre sale and they had none left to offer for the general public on sale- I've never seen that happen before- normally they have allotments for each sale- I just don't wanna get fucked and miss out on getting a face value ticket- the resale tickets were just too much for the bungle geek tour had to skip it
I was browsing email, password could be - monqui- since they book a lot of these shows

Man, back in the '00s I had some friends who worked for Monqui. Between that and making friends with some record label folks, no exaggeration, over the years I probably saw hundreds of bands for free. I suppose being totally out of the loop these days is making up for it. With all the extra fees I paid over $400 for 2 Geek Tour tickets but it was still worth it

Same kind of thing happened with the Geek Show Palladium show, and then the scalpers got fucked when they couldn't give away tickets the day of show. My friends got tickets for $10 on StubHub.

Holy fuck what a tour. I cannot wait for this.
Livenation presale MIGHT be DISCO, mobile app code might be COVERT. I have not verified this info.
I'm hoping for the following non-Bullhead songs in the set
Snake Appeal
Euthanasia
Revolve
Night Goat
Either way I'm stoked for this. Getting tickets Friday
EDIT: seen the preorder for 2002 Heavy Rocks and it adds "dronevil" from Mangrove 2002 and the 1970 7" as bonus tracks.

Empire Live is a great venue. It's right in downtown Albany and basically brand new.
It's the people that owned "Upstate Concert Hall" (Which for years before was called "Northern Lights")
they decided to move the club from Clifton Park in the middle of nowhere to downtown Albany.
The project started right before COVID started so they really just got rolling about a year ago.
It's set up kind of like the "Middle East" in Cambridge Mass. The main room holds about 1000 and they have a downstairs for smaller shows and local bands that holds about 300.
They gutted a local theatre to build it so its got good acoustics and all new sound system, lights PA's etc...
Lots of bars and restaurants walking distance from the venue.

A-side: Melvins' OG recording or even a re-recording of Boris.
B-side: Boris' cover of the Melvins song "Boris".

I hope it's something a bit more than that! I mean Boris have covered the song twice now (once on their own and another with Merzbow) and Melvins have played it live a hundred times and done the acoustic version. Make something new goddamn it! But if i was to guess, i'm going to say it's a re-recording of Bullhead with Boris along for the ride.

Assuming this is Boris or Bullhead redone by the band, in a way i'm always a bit unsure about these constant throwbacks to their older work. All the reissues too. On one hand i like that they don't just discard or ignore that history. Yet on the other i feel it's a little too convenient at times for them to offer up what they did years back. I hope this whole 40th year of the band isn't just about dredging up past glories. If this is Boris and Melvins redoing Bullhead it would be so much cooler to see them work together on something NEW and not a 32 year old record.
Maybe it is just the tour poster? That is not exactly tour merch right...
Mr phylzzz opens, them Melvins with bullhead, then Boris
Some pretty wild reactions on the socials.
I got no qualms with it, really.
Wild reactions to what? You only had to look at the poster to know Boris are the headliners.
will be second mlvns show in a row for me where they're not the closer. minor bummer, but i'm always psyched to see boris so all good.
last time i saw mlvns+boris, in 2018, boris closed that one too. at sxsw '07 boris played before melvins. that was a daytime outdoors show, which was kind of a trip.
I love that Melvins are playing before Boris! It means I can leave early!
Going to the Petaluma show on a drive back down from Seattle - thought I was going to have to miss this tour!

very bad news, surprised they are still doing this tour without Dale
I think it is great they are still doing it.
I am concerned about dale, this does not sound good... more like emergency. Hopefully all goes well and he returns with full force.
Bit of a gut punch to read this morning but with two other bands flying in I get it. Coady filling in is perfect for a situation like this.
Get well soon, Dale!
Man. That sucks beyond measure.
Get Well Soon Dale.
A bit of a shocker this! Although we did hear about back issues before with Dale but i doubt anyone ever expected him to have to be out of a full tour or that surgery would be required. It's sad to think that this will be the first time in 39 Melvins years that Dale hasn't been on stage with Buzz. I've long thought that if for whatever reason Dale couldn't make it, that Coady would make a fine replacement. It will be pretty weird to see a Buzz, Steven, Coady line-up. Hopefully Dale can be back for 2024.
Coady is not only a great drummer but he also knows how the band (and by that I mean Buzz) works so I think they are going to be ok throughout the tour.
Get well soon, Dale!!!
That doesn't sound good at all emergency spinal surgery just days before a tour due to start. Glad to hear Coady is filling in if it couldn't be Dillard than Coady is the next best 'Melvins family' option.
All the best to Dale.
fuuuuck. well i guess coady's one of the best/only choices for a replacement.
back surgery's scary enough, but i really don't like the sound of 'emergency' surgery
Goddamn this is sad. I really hope Dale ends up okay. This sounds like life changing shit.

my thought exactly, not my intention to start a medical discussion but i wonder what happened if only a few days back he was about to leave for the tour
Devastating news about Dale. I feel for him and his family - and really hope Melvins have a great healthcare plan and that Dale has an easy surgery and quick recovery.
I am glad they are doing the tour with Coady - it will keep the income coming in while they are still making up for lost time during the pandemic.
Coady will kill it, Dale will get better - and maybe we will start seeing some double drum shows again in the future!!!!
As I have mentioned here before, I have worked with Dale's brother for about 15yrs now.
We are in different offices these days, but I reached out to ask him to pass along only the best vibes to Dale.

Honestly, when i first read the top of the statement and it said the tour was in tribute to Dale, i thought he had died or something! Obviously when we read it, it was concerning but hopefully everything goes to plan.
Jeez I don't think Dale will ever return to drum again by the sounds of this issue.
Super sad news. Hope Dale recovers, but the history of this and the impact of drumming means there's some chance he may not drum on stage again.
Can we at least take a moment to appreciate the announcement? Well crafted, compassionate, gives fans and friends and family all enough information to respond in kind. Nothing snarky (unlike so many band's Twitter iPhone screeds these days).

I know i'm jumping to scenarios but if that DID happen i'm pretty sure Buzz would make sure Dale could still be involved with the band somehow if he wished to. Whether that was just in studio recording or even vacating drums and playing 2nd guitar or something when they tour and someone else is the drummer.

It made me wonder who wrote it. Whether it was one person or a couple who gave input. I could be wrong, but for some reason i suspect it wasn't Buzz.

Damn straight. It was really well crafted. I also noticed all of the comments were supportive on Instagram. I was expecting at least one or two assholes.
We love you Dale Crover !!

Yes, they canceled the 2019 euro tour because of this.
I'm looking forward to seeing the setlist and hopefully a few video clips of tonight's first show!
anyone have any intel on set times for tonight in LA? shows are so early these days.
Mr phylzzz starts at 8.
I need a damn merch buddy on the west coast. If anyone is willing to grab some records I would be willing to pay handsomely or possibly trade for other rare mackie stuff. Either way, we need merch table pics from tonight's show.
Pictures of merch stand!
So this is apparently the setlist. Not as many other songs added as i maybe expected. All tracks that Coady knows well and will have performed countless times in the past. No, 'If I Had An Exorcism'????
Ligature
Your Blessened
It's Shoved
Anaconda
Zodiac
Cow
A History Of Bad Men
Honey Bucket
Revolve
Night Goat
Boris
Shocking to read that Dale need spinal surgery, all the very best for him, he and Buzz are The Melvins, Dale is critical for the bands existense get back soon, Dale, but most important get back in a good shape without pains. All the very best from Bergen!

I think this is incomplete... both melvins and boris have likely equal headliner time...
This set here is merely an hour long?

Kind of sucks not to have those Dale backing vocals, but no real complaints about Coady's drumming. Real beastly presence. Incredibly fast version of "Honey Bucket."

I guess we'll see if both bands actually do their full albums as Boris seems to have omitted Rattlesnake in favor of Dronevil.
I feel that's a low-key trend with a lot of bands. Announce youre doing a full album...And not do the full album. Seen it with quite a few acts. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Weedeater, Max Cavalera, the list can go on.

I do not think so
coady did not do vocals. he was monstrous on the drums though, and had a lot of goodwill from the crowd lots of rare smiles from buzz. the whole band seemed to be having a blast, maybe once they realized that coady was fitting in perfectly. great great show. set was sadly short tho. i know it's billed as a co-headlining tour but melvins def felt like an opener. boris was louder, had an insane light show. they were super fun. kicked things off with the gong of course
oh and i predicted/hoped mlvns would finish their set with boris. best version... ended with just buzz on stage for the final few mins.
and then boris encored with boris. so full circle
Coady is a MONSTER drummer, saw a couple of videos..you can totally feel it's not Dale playing, it's normal, but it works great. had no doubt about that obviously
Agreed, the videos I've seen so far are outstanding.

It originally appeared on the Mangrove 2002 compilation and was listed as an outtake. The Third Man reissue has a slightly revised tracklist, with Rattlesnake coming after 1970 instead of the middle of the album.

Looks like Dale had that bad news a few days before of the tour start
Tonight at the show, Steve gave a brief update on Dale and said that he was at home resting. I guess he had the surgery?? Maybe Steve was a little too brief.
My brief recap...It was a good show. Coady filled in as best he could but honestly, it felt slightly off without Dale. Not surprising. I imagine he and Buzz have an extra sense between the 2 that is impossible to duplicate. They played the entire Bullhead album except If I had an Exorcism. The highlight was Steve. What a showman!! At one point he and Buzz seemed to be playfully stalking each other. There's good chemistry between the 2. I brought my daughter with me for her 1st Melvins gig. She had a great time. So, that was memorable for me. Got some good merch and a nice bloke running the booth. A big card that read 'We love you Dale' which was signed by the audience was given to Steve to give to Dale. Pretty sweet that someone thought to do that.
Quote from: black stallion on August 25, 2023, 01:25:16 PM

Yes. Which made the gig feel slightly off. Not something the casual listener would notice.
What a weird choice to not play if i had an exorcism...on a related note, did Coady play the drum solo at the end of Cow?

I was wondering how that would be too. I always thought it was funny the first time Dale played the Evil New War God solo on his own instead of the back and forth. It would be interesting to see Coady do it on his own now.

On a side note, does this guy age?? It looks like he's been 24 years old for the last 20 years. :)
Here's a clip of it! Coady's floppy fringe is a bit weird to get used to seeing. Also i wonder what he makes of Steven's Jared impression on A History Of Bad Men.

I can see what you mean but be sure after a few gigs in the tour he will be totally ok! obviously his style is different than Dale's so it will never be exactly the same, still i see no other drummer could do a better performance of this stuff, which is not so easy to play

Really begs the question who they would have got had Coady not been available? Only drummer I could think of off the top of my head would be Jason Roeder.

I think Dale always does the vocals on If I Had An Exorcism, so maybe it's not so weird that they're not playing it.
I got to re-listen to Endless Residency, then. I don't remember that part. Would be good to compare/contrast these versions to seeing it live on tour in a few weeks.

Great point. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason. Although Coady has worn the mic and added vocals before so i imagine he could do it. Plus we know what Buzz is like, he always says they are not slaves to the recordings. So one would think they could just perform the song without those vocals if need be.

Dave Grohl.
Good answer
Seen a couple recent sets where Melvins dropped A History of Bad Men and Boris is adding Rattlesnake
The weird time-signatures and off-kilter push-pull and weird arrangements of Bullhead-era Melvins would make replacing Dale a little harder than just getting a good pounder.
Grohl and Roeder would be good for the volume/energy but I don't know if either would be as adept with the proggy elements... Danny Carey would be good for the math, Matt Cameron would be good for the feel, but all three? Mayyyybe Brann Dailor? It's a hard seat to fill.

i thought the same thing. really there are some good drummers out there that could do it. its the singing tho. perhaps Hozoji from Helms Alee.
Dale's live show vocals are a key component of the Melvins machine. Coady is a beast on the kit, but man I'll miss Dale doing his thing behind the kit and on the mic. Get well & hope to see you again healthy and better than ever!!
I've seen the band a dozen or so times since about 2009. I've never thought Dale's vocals were critical. Jared is the second most important vocalist in Melvins history. Steven third. Pinkus fourth. Then the gang vocals of the BB era are the fifth. And the harmonies of the slithering Slaughter era sixth.
The most memorable Dale solo vocal I can conjure is in Houdini live when he does that ad lib thing in "Sky Pup."
Admittedly it's very hard to find great drummers, and even harder to find drummers who will learn the songs and can do backing vocals.
I guess my point here is overall I think Dale has been underutilized as vocalist. Because of this fact I think his vocals will be my least missed element while he's recovering.
Dale's backing vocals add a punch to Buzz's live vocals in manyof the songs. Songs like Night Goat, Boris, Hooch, and Revolve, to name a few, all have Dale harmonizing with Buzz and I've seen times where Buzz backs off the mic and lets Dale take over verses & it's seamless- their voices are perfectly matched for their live catalogue. Just my opinion- but I think he's a lot more important vocal-wise during shows than most people give him credit for. That & of course a master-class drummer.

totally agree
Sorry aA, but hard disagree. After this next week I can say I've seen them over 30 times since 1994. Dale's vocals have always been almost as impactful as his drumming.
I really hope that if the worst happens and Dale can't come back as drummer, i hope they kick Steven to the curb and Dale takes over bass duties. Then get some young, unknown drummer who plays similar to Dale to handle the kit responsibilities.

If Dale was no longer able to do the drum duty and Buzz wanted to continue touring, then Coady would have a big decision to make - Melvins or High On Fire, or both? Could they pull Jared back in occasionally? Buzz seems pretty loyal to Steve and rightly so. I don't ever seeing him getting the boot unless he turns into a slacker.
Could Melvins83 be a possibility? Is Dillard ready to retire as union machinist, and would he be into doing some serious touring?

From what Buzz has said, i'm 100% convinced that at least will never happen.
Also something i was thinking about today is the tour after this one! You just know Buzz already has it all planned out and booked for Spring or something. Probably loads more dates too. I wonder where a decision on something like that can be made. Especially with how open ended it could be. HOF supposedly have a new album for next year too so there's a lot up in the air there.

and I'd say it comes across like snooty MELVINS fan. like "play the deep tracks! collossus of destiny!... charmicarmicat!!" which we all know is NOT going to happen. but a snooty MELVINS fan looks cool name-dropping like that. and to which one might respond: "but these tracks are the representative of MELVINS sound and career. these must be played to any non-fans." and to that I would say that MELVINS are well beyond that stage. they are well beyond the "hello, we're MELVINS!" stage. they are well seated in their core-fan base. most people at a MELVINS show these days are on about MELVINS show number 15 on average. so come on! feed us snoots!! CHARMICARMICAT!!!!
pretty deep, no? :)
They are playing Bullhead in its entirety (almost), that's not so bad  Perhaps they could have added Blood Witch instead of Revolve or Honey Bucket this tour, but besides that I think we in europe and US got great setlists this year.
Looking at Spotify, Honey Bucket, A History of Bad Men and Revolve are their top three most popular songs. Night Goat is in the top ten. It makes sense to me that they play the crowd pleasers at this stage in the game - as much as I want a show that opens with Charmicarmicat followed by Colossus of Destiny for a full HOUR - I think that may never happen. Although holy shit I would follow the fuck out of that entire tour!!

Foo fighters 'Hero' is the pretty much the drum line from night goat.
The bassline from History of bad men is the man with the laughing hand, and that riff I suspect was borrowed, or what inspired that riff from the B side of Throbbing Gristle IRC 3.

Roseland was on fire! My thoughts:
1. Mr. Phylzzz were incredible, and the goofy vibe they brought worked well.
2. While I found the setlist to be odd and overplayed, I have no complaints. First time I have seen Ligature. I will never tire of Blessened or Bad Men. Coady was fantastic. My love for Steven grows bigger, the levity the band gets from his compulsive need to entertain just fits so well, and he is a monster on that bass. It's really like having two guitarists.
*Steven said surgery was a success*
3. I can't help but imagine this conversation pre-tour: Steven: "Hey, I bet I can turn the beginning of Night Goat into a clap-along." Buzz: *cackles*
4. The vocal ending of Boris is something I won't forget.
5. Hey portland, can we agree that they should only play the roseland? They always sound 10 times better when they play there and the energy is always higher.
6. I have heard some Boris before, but haven't really dived in. THEY BLEW THE DOORS OFF THE JOINT. I was surprised when I heard Melvins would be in the middle and Boris would close, but now it makes sense. They weren't better, just different. Their music just has more space and it breathes more, whereas Melvins are wound up like a top, because of those punk roots.
7. Boris paying tribute to the Melvins, feeling honored to be there and help celebrate was a sweet speech. This felt like new puppies and old puppies paying tribute and celebrating. This is a good tour.

that was special. and not just because it was one of the few times that buzz has ever thanked the audience.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it to Portland last night. Too much life stress crap going on (show of hands, anyone else find asbestos in their bathroom subfloor this week?) and I just couldn't talk myself into the 3.5 hour drive, only to have to jump back in the truck and do it again today plus another 2.5 hours to Spokane where I will be at the show tomorrow. Luckily I was able to pass my tickets off to a good friend. I told him he didn't have to pay me but he did manage to snag me whatever version of the Throbbing Gristle vinyl they had at the merch table.
I agree about the Roseland and actually miss that place. They've managed to have decent sound at the Wonder but that place you kind of have to find the sweet spots in the room.
Dude, sorry to hear about the asbestos (kinda sounds like a Melvins song name), that is no fun at all! Glad you were able to snag one of the TG vinyls. I did the same, along with one of the Nude with Boots Mackie small batch.
Anyone know what's in the $300 boxset that was in such limited #s? (the guy in front of me grabbed the last one) Gareth said the rest were reserved and he was couriering a couple around the venue.
Agreed with Black Santa, just a hell of a show all around and that solo ending by Buzz was unforgettable. Of course, the Dale announcement was the icing on top!!
Roseland is a great venue for them, was awesome seeing them at the Doug Fir but too small for most visits (& is moving)...just never the Crystal Ballroom again, please.
Probably doesn't need mentioning, but be sure to bring ear protection for the Boris set, those 6 Orange amps ain't fooling around.

Thank you for the well wishes my friend! It's not horrible but even a small patch of asbestos is scary. Luckily I have professional abatement coming next week after the restoration company said it could take a month to get scheduled. Joys of being a homeowner!
Glad you had a great time! I'll see if I can do some investigation into the $300 box. After drunk spending over $400 on that Revolver super deluxe 40th anniversary bundle, I might be dumb enough to get whatever it is if I'm having fun in the old hometown. Next time I'm in Porkland I'll hit you up. Would love to have a mellow hang out!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncGoPcgLZSk
at the show on thur in portland they had the 40th anniversary poster and another show poster from the week prior in CA just cant remember the city- did anyone catch that? also was there a specific Portland poster? bc if there was i didnt see it- they had prints of the TB lp cover, the aforementioned fortieth anniversary poster and that other show poster- i skipped buying the annviersary poster at the show bc it was 60$ and secret serpents had it on their site- regular edition for $40 so i scooped one on there, but even on their site they had specific show posters for sf and seattle- anyone go to the show in portland notice anything i didnt?

Looking for a merch buddy for this tour myself if anyone is willing HMU. :)
Spokane here we come!
edit: if anyone else besides GiveMe45 is here, I'm in a "Big Floppa" t-shirt
I have some extras I'd be willing to trade for some of the new stuff. I have a really cool bride screamed murder mackie sleeve from the last tour limited to 24. Glow in the dark haze electroretard, mackie sleeve bullhead and ozma from a couple of years ago. Any of this plus some cash for any new stuff at the merch table.

Hey buddy, sorry I didn't see this post until now. Would've been nice to say hi in person again.
Melvins were great. I pretty much knew what to expect with the set list but it was awesome nonetheless. Coady was a monster. Steven repeated the news about Dale's successful surgery and the crowd cheered. Now I know what everybody's talking about with Buzz at the end of Boris. It was pretty magical. I didn't go too crazy on the merch. I got Helen's shirt and I picked up one of the limited Electo-Bulls (37/46). My first Uber driver of the night asked what was going on and when I told him it got us on the subject of loud music and we ended up figuring out that he had seen my old band multiple times back in the mid/late 90s.
With all that said, my night actually turned out kind of lame. I went with a friend who can often be a Jekyll/Hyde drinker. He's a really nice guy, always wants people to be happy and have fun but once he gets to that one drink too many stage, he gets ultra obnoxious. When I got to his house before the show, I pretty quickly realized he had been slamming vodka/Red Bull and shots of Fireball. So, while Jekyll was who got in the Uber, by the time we got downtown, it was Hyde who got out. I basically had to hide from him during the Melvins set but it pretty much took the wind out of my sails and I left him there after just a few Boris songs. My fault, I knew better, but I probably won't go to many shows with him again.
whole show was amazing last night-
i went in totally unawares of Mr. PhylZZZ, other than some light gleaning from here, and they were definitely entertaining and a good warm-up for the melvs, that's for sure. i'm not sure if it was just the live sound being pre-tuned but they certainly gave me a Melvins-adjacent feel for the music they played, which makes me feel two things: 1. i wanna listen to some of their recorded music to see if what they sound like in that context is more distinct and 2. really makes me, even more than i already did, want to start my melvins-worship 2-person band. best chicago jazz i've heard in a bit.
now this is the first and most proper Melvins show i've been to in over a decade, besides the fact it's really the first show like this i've been to in half a decade since i've averaged working 50-60 hours a week for as long, and uh, i definitely let it out during the Melvins set. it certainly didn't help that Bullhead is also my favorite album, and that combo-ed with the greatest hits montage (which i personally appreciated as someone who hasn't made it to every melvins show ever in a 100 mile radius), made it a quasi-religious experience for me. i heard king buzzo preach his sermon on the mount. and it sounded a lot like boris. yeah, started their set out with a full band boris, then steve and coady made their exeunt at the end of things as buzz held us enrapt with a stripped-down participle to bring it all to a close. if anyone else was there, i was the one up front that looked like they were having an aneurysm, filled with ecstasy and zeal, barking prayers.
i can't lie and say i was super familiar with Boris before (not that i was intentionally avoiding them- by all accounts, i should have already been a disciple), although i had been listening to Heavy Rocks in preparation for the show, and with as hard as i went for the Melvins portion of the night, i think my neck is glad i didn't go feral with grace twice in one night. their set was a different dimension entirely, in many sensuous ways- the must and incense of fog machine vapors filling the nose, the bone-conducing volume of their amplifier walls, their gothic style and the change in lighting... the worship service began. also, the noisy electronic conjuration that i believe they ended soft edge(?) with was mind-shattering. would certainly make the effort to see Boris again if they perform nearby. also, they played boris as their encore, making it the third seperate time it was played in the night, although i think it was more than fitting.
as for a merch roundup, me and the old lady went to the melvins booth before the show, i considered getting the crazy circus tee that was from last tour(???) but ended up getting the bullhead for myself, night goat for the gf. also got the 14CD package set, as it seemed the best bang for the buck if you weren't going to nab any vinyl (too rich for my blood, even as much as i love some albums), and threw in the party pack for some goodies, even if it seemed a little spendy. The wife didn't want to get any Boris merch before the show started... but afterwards she was converted, and got a tour shirt and some of the pins for herself, and the amplifier worship service tee for me. I was half tempted by the EQD pedal they were selling, just because of the novelty, but after i asked the merchman if it was limited to the tour in any way, which it wasn't, i lost my interest.
all in all, an amazing night.

anyone else think mr phylzzz had some tool-esque type riffs? few songs/ moments where i def thought that- i def dug them live and their experimental nature lol great lil opener
I'm not sure about the end of the shows with Buzz doing Boris on his own. I'm not sure it works, which is weird since when he did the song solo acoustic i thought it was excellent. Something just doesn't seem to translate quite so well with these versions or after a full set with the band.

Sorry, but you are wrong here. This is an amazing way to end the set. Of all Melvins songs this one would probably translate the best - and it is just the end of the song, not the whole song.
Completely agree! It was an amazing end to the set.
Ian, I won't put value judgment on your decision not to see them live. It's completely up to you, it's your decision, and no one can make it for you. But until you do, you will never get the full experience, the full feeling, the full impact of being there in person from a YouTube, or any other digital source video. There are many aspects of watching and listening to videos that just don't translate to what the actual experience is and this was definitely one of them. I do hope that you get to see them live someday without the hassle of having to get digital tickets on a cell phone.
I have a similar feeling about Schnab's question of why anyone would want to see them multiple times on the same tour. Why not get as much as you can of a really good thing?

I used to go see Melvins multiple times in a row on tours. I remember the first time that I saw them two nights in a row on the Houdini tour- for some reason I thought that they were doing a different set each night, but they were almost identical - I think there were two songs each night that they did not play both nights. Following that I discovered that they play the same set every night when they tour, I don't know why at the time but I figured all bands play different sets each night. I really dug the fact that they played the same set each night, because it allowed me to really dig into the songs. I think I have seen them so many times now that I will see them once or at the most twice on the same tour. I'm totally cool with that as I am older!
so there have been posts on the fb group about the St Louis date getting cancelled. only an email from the venue, who are offering refunds. Justin, who runs Secret Serpents says it's probably because Big Business are already scheduled to play a show in Portland. no announcement from the band so far i hear.

Oh no doubt. I agree, i don't dispute that. I'm totally not saying Buzzo's version of Boris was bad. In fact in a way it makes sense for Melvins to alter it a bit. Especially when one considers that Boris (the band) do a fairly straight forward cover of the song. So why not do it in a different way. Incidentally i've found it interesting that both people here and the audiences on the clips i've seen all seem to respond positively to the moment where it is just Buzz on stage. I wonder if some of that is the obvious change in dynamic. After a full set of the trio, bringing it down to only Buzz makes it visually and auditorily interesting. Yet i still feel it seems a bit "off" somehow. It reminds me a bit of when the band would perform the second part of Stop Moving To Florida live. Again it always felt a bit awkward (at least to myself) in that bit. Like it sort of lost the audience a bit there. Buzz does some kooky things live with his vocals sometimes.

Went on Red Flag's page and they only list Boris. No Melvins or Mr. Phylzzz.

Aaaaand this has me worried about the Indy gig two days later all of a sudden. I really hope they aren't banking on some back and forth flight stuff with these shows.
Looks like Big Biz is playing Sunday Sept 10th at Lardo in Portland. Coady has some flying to do!

Does anyone ever ask why some people watch the same basketball team play 80+ times in a season?
Could you imagine the outrage if a football fan admitted to watching only one match a year of their favorite club? (American to English translator engaged!)

my only comment to that would be that MELVINS play the same set list every night.
That's fair. It doesn't negate how much ass they kick every show.
I'm not suggesting people should be going all dead head or phish fan and follow them around, but catching a couple of close shows ain't so bad either. Lucky we got a couple of tours this year with different set lists, on top of it.

That is what I have been noticing - I can somehow catch 2-3 different tours a year now, each with a different setlist (with the exception of the "hits").
If they did a different show every night - I would be following them around like a dead head. I've been loving how they are stretching out on Your Blessened - almost a jam band for like 1 minute!!!!

Melvins definitely not playing tomorrow in St. Louis. :(
Just been looking on the map, 2 days for Coady to fly to Portland do a gig then fly back to Indianapolis is quite a trek! He'll be dead on his feet by the end of this tour. The worrier in me thinks of all the things that could go wrong in a jaunt like that.
It wouldn't take much for that to fall apart real quick. Just a major flight delay or cancellation would be all that it would take.
I have to applaud Coady for trying to make all this work, though. Dude is built different for sure.
I'll be in Indy on Monday.

looks like the san diego show has been moved to the 16th
Phew!!!! That's good news because my band is playing the Big Biz show in Seattle. I was wondering what was going to happen. Looks like Coady is flying again!!

firstly remember how I was griping about Cody doing Cow and rolling into A History of Bad Men? forget I said that. Cody nailed the living shit out of it. it WAS the cow outro but with eyes closed you knew it was Cody. it's amazing how style affects a beat. even if it's note for note. Holy crap Cody was the star of the show. Steven.. God bless him. but I said this to someone else. (wow.. this sounds pretentious but...) I don't think he gets Night Goat. I don't think he really feels that song. it's not a skippy bass line. brother was happily skip-a-dee-do'ing around the stage on the bass intro. it made it seem like a happy song. Night Goat is not happy.
Your Blessened blew my face off. I got the MELVINS goosebumps again. it had been a little while.

The bass tweedles at 12 and 20 seconds seem like a peculiar artistic choice

I listended for that because remember it mentioned here and I thought they did a better job of slowing it down and beautifully grinding it out last night. but I have seen the double time melvins set in the past. it's a thing.
In a live setting who really sets the tempo? I've always heard it was more of a drummer thing right?
Dale tends to play a bit slower, especially some songs

Schlagel was out with them on the Ministry tour last year too, and on the fall '19 tour w/ Redd Kross. He was also working the board on the last Jello/GSM tour, 2015? Struck a brief conversation with him then, just saying great job and mentioned seeing him w/ Melvins before.
Wish I could have made the Cleveland show last night, too busy a week to do an all night drive. Beachland Ballroom is a great place, a little bigger than their usual stop - The Grog Shop.

Yes, it's definitely Blood Witch. It even says it at the top. It may not be from this tour though. I just found it online. Probably from the last tour earlier this year when it was in the setlist.
probably because Steven (and Dale) did backing vocals on that song

I remember that Dale had lyrics for A History of Bad Men taped to his cymbal stand on the ASA tour. After the show, my buddy jumped on stage and grabbed it and the roadie made him give it back lol.
They should hide all lyrics from Steven. Keep that dude off the mic at all cost haha. To me, He butchered a history of bad men at the NC show.

+1 they're enjoying themselves. they could hang it up forever tomorrow. been grinding for 40 years. you think they're supposed to hate their job like you guys do?
Oh I like Steven a ton. He's one of my favorite players the bands ever had. I'm just not understanding the clapalong approach to night goat. Not sure it's even a complaint. Just don't get it. I think Steven rules though. Great part of the band.
The holy trinity of Melvins bassists is Kevin, Mark and Trevor in that order. Steven is a LONG way down the list.
The Melvins have only had three bass players ever. Joe, Dale and Steven. (Based entirely on the presence of a Melvins solo record.) Of these three it's possible Steven still comes last for me. And that's weird to say because I like him, mostly. Love him sometimes.
Steven is great in the band, and I do not see him going anywhere. I love the absolute cheese factor he brings - I mean, starting a clap-along to Night Goat? That is totally absurd! And because of that - it works. Screaming "King Buzzo!", "Wooooo!" and "Los Angeles! How are you doing?" and all of the goofy stage moves are all just over the top fun that I love because I know it makes hardcore fans cringe while at the same time, makes brand new fans excited - but is all right out of the 1970s rock and roll handbook, and certainly right out of the KISS handbook. I wish that Steven would start spitting blood during a bass solo.
And at the same time? He can play really well (bass playing is like a cross of old school Gene Simmons with Paul McCartney), always gives 110%, has killer tone, approaches the songs in his own way.
Plus - the whole Redd Kross angle really works for me.
But I also miss all of the other bass players - I would love to see a show with any of them again. I never got to see them with Joe, which bums me out.
Steven is a gnarly bass player for sure. I have to say i lost all interest in Off! when he left the group. I'm even sure they're still good, but I love his energy on those songs and it just isn't the same without him.

Man, reading this post on Instagram half asleep the morning of the show had me freaking out for a moment. I saw "dedicated to Dale Crover" and thought he had died. Was relieved the show was still going on with Coady Willis since I had already driven 4+ hours to see it but still very concerned for one of my absolute favorite drummers of all time.
Got to say that Willis did an absolutely outstanding job as Crover's replacement. Killer show and from my angle, Willis didn't miss a beat. In terms of a last minute replacement, I can't imagine anyone else doing a better job.

All the best to Dale.

Kind of sucks not to have those Dale backing vocals, but no real complaints about Coady's drumming. Real beastly presence. Incredibly fast version of "Honey Bucket."

I do not think so
yeah he did. he had the same headset as Dale. it was on the later tours.
He definitely didn't do any vocals at the show I went to of this current tour.

Yes. Which made the gig feel slightly off. Not something the casual listener would notice.
I can see what you mean but be sure after a few gigs in the tour he will be totally ok! obviously his style is different than Dale's so it will never be exactly the same, still i see no other drummer could do a better performance of this stuff, which is not so easy to play
https://youtu.be/8a3PHROCP48?feature=shared
I get that it's not Crover but Willis was absolutely outstanding the very first show of this tour. Zero criticisms from both myself and any of the other people I attended the show with.
Quote from: GiveMe45 on August 29, 2023, 11:48:21 AM
Sorry aA, but hard disagree. After this next week I can say I've seen them over 30 times since 1994. Dale's vocals have always been almost as impactful as his drumming.
While I fully appreciate Crover's vocals, there is no way in hell that they are anywhere near as impactful as his legendary drumming skills. I've also seen the Melvins live 30ish times (since 1998 in my case).

I agree. He's a talented bassist (as well as an energetic showman) and his singing might otherwise be fine but it really doesn't fit in the Melvins. Not really a fan of any of the songs he's written/performed for the Melvins to be honest.

Bitch
Fascinating as it is to see these little insights, whenever i see clips of bands soundchecking it reminds me that life on the road must be pretty grating after a while. I know bands attempt to look enthused as they play through the hits they have played a million times before during a gig, yet having to stand around going though endless soundchecking must be a huge drag. Especially night after night. I'd just want to get up there and do my set - no messing around with soundchecks and shouting "check" over and over. A necessary evil of course though if they want it to sound good and they can hear what's going on. Actually in these videos that sound guy with the squeaky voice is more irritating than going through the checks!

No. None of these are of the entire soundcheck. I was off doing other things while they were setting up the gear. The green room at Cain's in Tulsa is in a whole other building so I didn't hear that they had started the last part of soundcheck [where they're playing as a full band so the house sound and monitor levels can be fine-tuned].
I record the soundchecks to give the fans who are interested in these sorts of things an opportunity to see them, since they're generally not open to anyone besides the band, crew, and venue staff. Also, sometimes they play stuff during soundcheck that isn't part of the tour's setlist [like the cover of The Rolling Stones' "Bitch" in these videos]. Another band I'm friends with usually does a 3-5 song mini-set at soundcheck. None of the tunes they play during soundcheck are included on the setlist of that evening's show.

Already had it with Buzz (and Kevin!) on 'Mr Entertainer'.
i mean a split ep like stallion was surely talking about. and they just posted they are in LA recording with Toshi now.
Talk about coincidence! I've just seen clips on the Melvins FB page of Mr Phylzzz recording with Buzz present! At this point a Melvins/Phylzzz thing seems destined to happen.
I'm ready 😄

Here's a clip of it! Coady's floppy fringe is a bit weird to get used to seeing. Also i wonder what he makes of Steven's Jared impression on A History Of Bad Men.

That's about the only thing I could gripe about with the show I went to. Would way rather hear Buzz handle the vocals on this one.
Just came back here real quick to say Pinkus would have worked for History of Bad Men. His deeper vocal inflections would have been a good fit for that.
I had no expectations of Boris and was blown away. Granted they only played one album (+ a cover of Boris that out-Melvined Melvins) but I was blown away at how good they were. Almost as loud as Swans but sounded spectacular, and they were monster players.

Did Atsuo (drums) yell out an obligatory celebratory Rawk & Roll "
YEAH!!!" every 30 seconds? Only seen Boris once and there were a whole lot of those ... it was very David Lee Rothian.

HaHa ... so yes! Brothers from other mothers and such. Those two could certainly form a band of pungent RAWK fromage. Maybe they could get DLR to sing!
If I'm not asked at least twice during a performance whether or not I am having a good time by the artist or some other representative I take personal offense.

LOL
What happens at that point if a crowd all shout back in unison - "NO!"??
Corgan cites from anecdotal experience that it only takes about four people having a bad time and ready to make trouble in a concert of almost any size to make the whole thing go sour. Audiences turn on a band long before they get to ask the rhetorical "You guys ready to rock?" I don't know if I believe the four bad actors theory but that is an interesting heuristic.

I went to a 2004 Indonesian Tsunami punk benefit at one of the local punk pubs in Brighton. Half a dozen bands were playing with all door and drink proceeds going to a victims families charity. One of the bands was Red Flag 77 who had their own little followiing - called the Flag Army - whose chant at gigs was FLAG AR-MY, FLAG AR-MY....
Just before they were about to play (I think they were headlining), Mel Combat Shock who organised the gig stood on stage and made a tearful speech about the trauma the population was going through, having lost thousands of their friends and family. You could hear a pin drop until she finished a sentence with the word, "tsunami" whereupon one extremely pissed and uncomprehending Flag fan chanted at the top of his lungs:
TSUN-ARMY! TSUN-ARMY!

That's pretty good. We were at an amnesty international benefit, and the girl talking was going on forever. I was tripping, but it was forever and people were getting agitated. I started clapping and everyone joined in and cheering. She got pissed and left the stage, the band started playing. Good times.

I was imagining he will be there. It'll have been just over 6 months since the operation by then.
I missed the Twins tour entirely due to scheduling. Did they interpolate "If I Had an Exorcism" somewhere in the set? I only see seven of the eight BULLHEAD songs in any setlists I can recall.

No, it was entirely absent throughout the tour.

That must be the remix of Pain Equals Funny that Buzz mentioned fairly recently.
Got my Twins of Evil CD today.
"Funny Equals Pain" is indeed an alternate mix. I didn't notice that train wrecking crossfade in there anymore. Instead it seems more like some ambient guitar noise is used as connective tissue.
All in all that version is mildly interesting. It's got the same four basic riffs and the nod to "Boris". The parts might be in different order. I'm not sure on first listen. If both versions were played back to back I'd feel like I just heard an EP on repeat.
The Boris tune is pretty solid for a $5 cheapy CD. It's a long droney heavy maudlin affair with some pained wailing male vocals. Lyrics are in Japanese so I only recognize the word 'watashi' which means I/me. It's about 16 minutes of the same chord or two ringing out. It's bookended by snippets of a sort-of jaunty carnival tune on a melodeon or harmonium type instrument
Good review, thanks

What part of the song is that in the original?
About half way through. Knowing me I'll probably pull both songs up in the audio editor and A/B them.
Both vinyl editions were sold out after about 8 minutes.
Nooooo !!! Aww shit. :buzz: ](*,)
damn went ultra fast
Even the CD is now sold out.
No worries - they will be on Discogs by the end of the week. At a premium.
Yeah, I really wish they would fix the ShoxOp checkout cart - I've lost track of how many threads I've read where people had the record in the cart, but it disappeared while they were processing their payment details. Happened again this time as well. Honestly half the time I'm not even sure why I bother trying. It just ends up meaning that I skip buying a bunch of records by a band I like, because if it's gotta be a stressful task, then screw it.

The 'finish line' for shoxop payments is after payment is processed, for everyone trying to buy. If shoxop was able to change checkout to 'if it's in your cart, it's yours,' you would see it sell out much more quickly, and you wouldn't be in any better position.
That being said, there should be more cds soon, and I am guessing that Buzz will bring some on tour. P.s. 65 or 50, for a two song record?

8 minutes doesn't seem stressful seeing as we've had 8 seconds to deal with it in the past.
Yup. Reserving inventory before checkout benefits bots who can hold an infinite amount of inventory. We are better off colliding on the payment.
to me it seemed like it was less than 8min but whatevs
