What/Where/When was your first Melvins show?

Yeah, '96. "An evening with the Melvins." Stag tour. Set one Buzz and Mark switched instruments and did a short experimental set. Set two began with At the Stake but was played quietly. It was a quiet poppy set. Ended with Dale doing Cottonmouth by himeslf. Set 3 was heavy as fuck Melvins.

I saw that tour in Detroit. The sweet thing was that they played in a club that has two halls on two floors; upstairs is the larger hall, downstairs is the bar. The Melvins played the bar, and the Meatmen were playing in the hall. I had tickets to both, so just went back and forth between the two shows. I think the Meatmen show was so sparsely attended that they wound up opening the doors to everyone at the Melvins show, so it turned out I bought two tickets for nothing. Either way, I got to see both bands in the same building but on different bills.

Yes, and I remember thinking that they got a lot of attention due to their name. I never thought they were that good.

I remember reading something in one of the liner notes(can't remember which album), where Buzz is talking about Kurt Vanderhoof and is sorta dogging on him for being a homo and playing in Metal Church

Vanderhoof was kind of a geek. I remember being in Bubbles record store in Kent, WA and Vanderhoof walked in. I was friends with the guy behind the counter and he introduced me and a friend to him. The very first thing he said was "Do you guys want an autograph?" That stuck with me as very "rock starrish" It is one thing to be asked for an autograph, but to volunteer one?

i was there too. in Detroit i didn't go upstairs though. i wonder how many shows weve both attended.

christco , do you remember seeing that one guy at all similar shows whom had like a shaved head with two long pig tail braids down each side of his head and was like Marilyn manson ish? kinda shorter heavy set? how bout the pop eye dude?

In Detroit, you always see the same people at all of the shows. You and I are probably removed by about 4 friends. I don't remember the guys you are talking about, but do you remember Mark, he was a big tall black dude with a forked goatee, who went to practically every show I went to from 1990 until probably 1998. We eventually became friends after years of seeing one another about 5 times a month at various bars and shows.

That same kind of thing happens to me in Seattle with a dude named Javier who's at damn near every show I go to. A while back I went and said hi to him and mentioned that he's at all the shows I go to. He was a total dick and said some self righteous thing about how he was at all the GOOD shows I go to. Not true either, since some of the best shows I've been to he was definitely absent from...

I must be one of the more recent converts. I didn't start listening to the Melvins until 2003 and my first show was at the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis, September 2006. Great, great fucking show.Does anyone know the exact point at which the band started wearing gowns/dresses/muumuus on stage? Has Buzz ever spoken about that? That had to be around the time Rutmanis joined the band right? Not that it's that important, but I'm kind of curious.

The first time that I ever personally saw that was when they opened for Tomahawk on the Mit Gas tour, so that would have been, what, 2003? Rutmanis was on the left with a giant "F" on his chest, Buzz on the right with a giant "U." Loved it. I'm pretty positive that was the beginning of it, because I had seen them pretty much once a year at least for the prior 10 years and that was the first time I saw the robes.

I think they began with the mumus around 99, maybe 2000.
