The first time I saw them was on holiday in North Carolina.I had to show some ID to get into the venue; I had my British driving licence. Although it didn't have a photo on it, my date of birth was there. The guy tutted and shook his head and told me I needed a photo to prove it was me and prove I was over 18 (or 21 or whatever). I told him to look at my face. (I was at least 30). He looked and immediately said, "Oh, sorry, no problem!"  Bastard.

I bought a Houdini shirt at the gig. The one with the two-headed cat and  "PUSSY" written on the back. Boy, did I get a lot of stick for that! I couldn't walk anywhere (I was staying in Charlotte, NC) without someone commenting on it. Even got questioned by the pigs about it. That just made me wear it more.

Toward the end of the gig, Buzz's amp blew up and Dale and Mark finished the set alone. Buzz skulked out to let them get on with it and I followed him into the car park and shared a beer with him and talked about stuff until it was time to go.

Great idea, this raffle!

That's crazy and I get what you mean about Tool and their live shows. They're the type of band that attempts to replicate the album as much as possible, and they themselves try to get lost with all the stage show hooplah and artsy add-ons. Whereas the melvins just play, whatever happens happens. If something goes wrong, they roll with it instead of throwing a hissy fit. I still like Tool and all, but when it comes to live shows they don't even compare.

My favorite Melvins memory was seeing them on the A.S.A. tour at Maxwell's in Hoboken.  I went to the show solo, so I got to the show about 4 hours early and hung out in the restaurant part of the club and got some dinner.  Meanwhile the band was a few tables away eating dinner too.  I didn't want to get all rockstarred out, so I didn't approach them.  I just sat and ate my dinner at the bar and tried not to get excited like a 13 year old girl at a Jonas Brothers concert.  Every so often I'd send a text message to a chum of mine and tell him what the Melvins were doing.    Things like, "Buzz just went into the mens room."   and "Do you realize, as we speak, King Buzzo is taking a shit !!"

Eventually they opened the doors to the club where about 20 other people who arrived way too early congregated.  The band came up and did a soundcheck and Buzz talked to the small crowd.  As they walked off the stage I walked up to Buzz and told him they sounded great, and couldn't wait for the show to start.  He said thanks.  Then they all just seemed to hang around for a bit.  They talked to people and even autographed some stuff people brought.  Slowly they disappeared and an hour or so later the show started.  The show was great, of course too.  But it reassuring to see such an awesome and down to earth group of guys, who are basically living legends in my book.

I would have to say one of my favorite Melvins show was the "Evening with" in Cinci. Mainly because I went with both of my brothers...My oldest brother got me into the Melvins when I was 12, so it was cool to finally experience them live with both of them (We just saw them again together in Mount Clemens.) So there you have it, the Melvins bring family together.

An honorable mention was the "Geek Show" show in Detroit.  No real good reason other than it was always awesome seeing Rutmanis live and I had a bunch of my really good friends with me. I also got to meet Rutmanis, Dale, and Buzzo after the show, so that was pretty cool. Buzz and Dale were super nice and very talkative.

Northampton, MA - August 2008. Toward the end of the set they start doing the Star Spangled Banner, a little into it some A- Hole gets onto the stage (which was very small and crowded) charges through and dives into the crowd. Melvins pretend not to notice... Song continues, they are @ "..Land of the free, and the home of the brave" -Dude gets onto stage again, comes through and in the process of stage diving manages to knock over Dales Hi-hat. I don't even think he had landed and Dale was up and at the front of the stage ready to KILL. Buzz had to stop him from going after the guy. But instead of freaking out and stopping the show. Buzz turned it into 3-4 Minutes of improv. I mean I've never seen him talk to the audience before, or since. He was so funny, ripped into the guy, asked us where the parties were. Invited us all to the next show etc. I think he knew Dale needed to calm down. Then they did Star Spangled Banner all over again "..From the top" But this time Jared did it riddled with profanity in a pirate voice. And then it went right into Boris..AMAZING!!

-You can see me in the bottom left of the screen @ 6:42 taking a picture with my cel phone. Haven't laughed that much at a concert ever that I can remember.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhlCkVW8nyQ

Holy shit, that's like the only time I've ever seen Dale get angry!

You know you're a fucking asshole when you get a guy like Dale angry.

cara

hahaha ugh. When they played star spangled banner in Phoenix some dick was making nazi signs throughout the song.

Idlehanz

When they sang it at ATP, there were a few middle fingers, but that probably had more to do with people hating America that the Melvins singing the SSB.

Did Dale say "I'm gonna beat the shit outta him/you?"  Turn it up a bit, sure sounded like it.

I've never seen Dale pissed either, but you can't be fucking with peoples instruments.

i think my favorite would be..midnight show Olympia Washington..for the stoner witch record party...it was a "quiet" show...i watch the show from the side of the stage next to buzz's dad and wife mackie, thanks to my Spanish teacher ..Mr Dan Raymond...set totally rocked..was in awe the whole time...and after the show got to hang out backstage and watch duetrom kick a fan around and yell cause someone stole 500 bucks from him....absolutely awesome....it was also my first melvins show....

I was at that show too. The quiet show at the Capitol Theater. Some people in the crowd were so pissed! Others thought it was funny. I have a recording of that show, I listened to it just the other day in fact.
