I'm looking forward to this no matter what.  Personally I'd like to see the Melvins headline ( longer set ), but either way, I'm going.  I'll keep my ass out of the pit and have eyes in the back of my head, but I'll be there.

Both bands even consider Sabbath as their major influnece. I can't see why you lot see this as such an offensive tour.

Down fans are a million miles away from Pantera fans. Clearly never heard of the Brotherhood of Eternal Sleep... Down fans are tight, true group of fans who appreciate real music.

I also wouldn't consider either band to be considerably 'heavier' than the other, so I don't know where these thoughts of angry stampeding circle pits has come from. It's stoner/blues/doom metal at the end of the day, people are their to bang their head. Slowly.

I'm not playing into anyone's preconceived perceptions of Down fans.  I've been listening to Down (off and on) since about '98 or so when a friend played 'em for me.  I always thought it was pretty decent and definitely recorded better than Pantera (if not musically superior).  They're pretty standard though when put up against a band with such a vast and diverse catalog such as the Melvins.  When Down releases their Colossus Of Destiny come back and chat with us.

If that is supposedly their musical peak, I think I'll pass. Compared to NOLA, arguably the most well respected stoner/doom/sludge album of all time, I know where I stand.

Down are probably alot more diverse than you expect, it isn't all Bury Me In Smoke. They've got light, acoustic tracks, instrumentals, bouncy crowd moving tracks, 9 minute progressing epics.

At the end of the day, one band is headlinging stages at festivals whilst the other is struggling to keep playing. Neither of them are more 'commercially acceptable'. Make your own decisions as to what that means. I know it definitely means Melvins will be supporting for one.
